I don't understand how ignorance quickly became innocence.

If I'm Lane Kiffin and USC, I can't file the appeal of my punishment fast enough.

In fairness, Maturi would still be deciding if he was eligible in the first place. So we'd have committed no violations in the meantime. Whew.
 

I think if he played for any school not in the SEC he'd be inelligble.

If the people in charge didn't feel like an Auburn-Oregon NC wouldn't make a sh*tload of money this would've turned out much differently...

Cam Newton may be eligible to play now but that does not mean that he won't become ineligible in the future. This ruling on his eligibility was done completely on facts that are currently available. If new facts come out that indicate these actions occurred and there is not a reasonable doubt, he will be ruled ineligible and Auburn will more than likely have to forfeit their season. Being undefeated and so far into the season they may as well keep trotting him out there. The gains are far greater than the loss. At this point its all or nothing.

The NCAA has taken one of its better deterrents – a rule that clearly stated no one representing an athlete can even solicit extra benefits – and all but reversed it. They’ve essentially said that you’d be a fool for not soliciting.

“That’s the most messed up ruling I’ve ever heard,” one major college assistant coach said Wednesday. “They can ask every school for money and then someone will bite on it. And then if they get caught for asking they can just say the kid didn’t know.”

Agreed, though I think they also want to make sure TCU does not get into the NC game. If Auburn has to play without Cam Newton in the SEC championship I don't think their chances are that great.
 



It is the most ridiculous rulings I've ever heard of and seriously damages the credibility of the NCAA. Plausible deniability becomes the key word. If the athlete didn't know that a third-party was shopping him around, then he (or she) hasn't forfeited any eligibility. SEC Commissioner Mike Slive wasn't going to let the best player in the country be ruled ineligible for the championship game.
 

The NCAA is too busy with important issues, like making sure low profile schools with small budgets aren't named after indian tribes, to worry about fluff like players shopping their services.

They didn't have much credibility to begin with.

If Auburn was 9-3 right now, he would be ineligible. Not doubt about it.
 

One thing for sure, if he played here he wouldn't be driving a 2010 Escalade.

This. and not only "a third- party"....HIS DAD. This basically means ANYTIME someone gets caught in a pay to play they can claim ignorance. Terrible.
