The 2022 Walter Camp All-America Teams were announced today and Minnesota had two student-athletes recognized. Center John Michael Schmitz and running back Mohamed Ibrahim were both named to the Second Team.

Schmitz, who was named First Team All-Big Ten by both the coaches and the media, anchored an offensive line that featured four new starters and helped pave the way for the nation's No. 11 rushing offense, as the Gophers ran for 218.2 yards per game. Minnesota ranked 17th in sacks allowed at 1.08 per game and tied for 23rd in the nation in tackles for loss per game at 4.33.

Ibrahim, who played in 11 games, finished fourth in the nation in rushing yards at 1,594 and second in the country in rushing yards per game at 144.9. He tied for second in the nation with 19 rushing touchdowns and tied for third in scoring with 10.4 points per game. He was also named First Team All-Big Ten by the league coaches and media and is a semifinalist for the 2022 Comeback Player of the Year Award.

The Walter Camp All-America Teams were announced today, but there are additional All-America teams that will be announced in the upcoming days. The schedule is below.

Friday, Dec. 9: Football Writers Association of America
Monday, Dec. 12: Associated Press
Tuesday, Dec. 13: The Sporting News
Wednesday, Dec. 14: American Football Coaches Association
 


Really great players. Both brought a toughness to the field that I really appreciated.
 


Is there a pecking order to the AA lists, i.e. is one considered the most prestigious or “legit”?

Any All-America team is worth telling your grandchildren about and makes you a genuine one, but to be a consensus All-American, recognized by the NCAA as such, you have to make at least three of five selectors; Schmitz just made the Football Writers team, which is one of them, but missed the Camp. The three left are AP, Coaches, and TSN. Schmitz also made CBS Sports and two others.
