Been is going to have to prove the Gophers are the deepest team they have in the next week. 3 games in 4 days with 2 of them down in Florida, one day off then home game. Then Michigan State 3 days after that.

Is Caleb still out with mono? I know some injuries to Mitchell and Cochran, but Ben is going to need more minutes out of Edmonds, Betts, Fox. Funny how Edmonds and Williams can do well against us, but then find very few minutes when playing for us. Going to be an interesting important stretch of the season here.

We are the deepest team Ben has had. Unfortunately, other than Garcia and perhaps Mitchell we are very deep at a low level of talent. The 10th guy isn't much worse than the 3rd guy but the 3rd guy isn't any good. We are going to be deep.....in the standings.

Betts goes 2/3 and 5 points in six minutes in the first half and then doesn't see the floor again. You develop depth, just not going to happen. He's coaching to save his job now, the results can be predicted, might as well be gone.

His defense is HORRIBLE

He's playing Fox quite a bit. Edmonds did have a couple of nice games coming off the bench when F. Mitchell was sidelined but has not played much since.

I think it shows that Ben already is desperate and is keeping his rotations short. Betts made a nice offensive contribution coming off the bench in the first half against CMU but I don't think he ever entered the game in the second. Had the team been able to get any daylight between them and the opponents since the first game, I would assume Betts and Edmonds would have played more.

Wichita State has played well so far and deservedly is ranked ahead of us by Pomeroy. The team really will have to clamp down on defense while avoiding fouling too much in order to have a good shot of beating them.

His defense is HORRIBLE
I don't remember him making any big mistakes last night, letting his man break free and getting open layups, played as well as anyone. The guy he was guarding made one pull up jumper across the middle.

Yeah in his limited minutes in other games he also had and and 1 basket. offensive rebound, and some nice defensive stops and rebounds. Ben just needs to let him play to get him some confidence. His size and ability for the 3 spot is very ideal and Ben isn't taking advantage of that. 57% FG and 50% 3 PT in limited minutes. Rigsby is 31.8FG and 24% 3 PT. He could definitely help Garcia by cutting when the leave him to double team Garcia. There are plenty of other Gophers who in general play great defense that also have their lapses...going to happen.

Just saying if Ben doesn't find a way to get more minutes out of these, the next week will wear some tread off the tires. Between traveling and 3 games in 4 days. Then 3 days only after that until MSU comes in.

His defense is HORRIBLE
The problem with this roster is that outside of Garcia one would have a hard time finding a guy who wouldn't fit the "His ____________ is horrible" statement.

Choose one of these to put in the blank and you can do it for nearly every player:
speed
defense
offense
ball handling/ball security
passing
shooting
free throw shooting

7 players taking up the majority of minutes. One player playing all 40 minutes and another playing 36. What bga1 states above is 100% spot on. I don't see that changing with Mitchells return. Mitchell will swallow up one of the other 5 players minutes and one of last nights 7 will find his way to the bench.

Someone mentioned it earlier, there isn't a whole lot of difference between #3 and #10 on this team talent wise. Hell, he might as well go the way of a hockey team. His starting 5 is his first line/starting lineup, after that rotate the next 5 in at every TV timeout. 1st line, 2nd line, 1st line, 2nd line.

Let's be honest, he doesn't take advantage of matchups, he doesn't take advantage of anything the other team gives him so why not.

Ben is DEEP................ in his own bullshit!

Ben's probably a great guy, but he talks alot of gobbledygook. Seems like he's trying too hard to sound smart, yet comes across vapid.

I just looked at the offensive efficiency of this team. I am no analytics guy, but just looking at shots taken versus points scored by player and team is pretty revealing.

The Gophers have put 316 shots in 6 games and scored 384 points against some pretty bad competition- so we are averaging 1.2 points per FG shot taken including the bonus free throw points we get. Dawson Garcia is averaging nearly about 1.8 points per FG (incredibly good) and the rest of the team is about 1 to 1 (horrid). Femi has the worst ratio I have ever seen (I know its early)- he has taken 35 shots to score 15 points. Ouch.

By comparison, Wisconsin as a team is averaging nearly 1.5 pts per FG attempt 413 FGA /608 total points against far better competition. Purdue is right with Wisconsin as the best in the Big Ten so far on this measure and everyone else in the conference is 1.3 pts per FGA or better other than Washington who is right with us.

Two years ago when we played Ohio State, they turned the microphones on the huddles so you could hear each coach talking to his players. At the time I thought Ben talked too much in a kind of stream of consciousness style to his players. He talked so much in a continuous free flowing style that I thought his players might tune him out and/or have a hard time remembering what he said. Chris Holtmann was the opposite. He limited his talk to a few items and repeated them in a pithy style. At the time I thought Holtmann was a more effective communicator for the situation.

In spite of that, we beat Ohio State on that occasion and it was one of only two regular season conference wins we had that year.

I wish I could read a transcript of his interview with Coyle.

We don't want Betts to improve too much. If he becomes valuable, he's gone.

Sometimes a team is called deep because the difference in their second best player and their 10th best player isn’t much, Garcia is a stud.

To be fair, I believe the “depth” showed that we were able to remain competitive (I know that doesn’t mean much). It still didn’t overcome the late game coaching blunders for example. In years past (as I actually expected coming into the weekend), we would have been blown out if our 2nd best player was hurt and we had seemingly no options. Maybe it turns around when some guys come back despite me not holding my breath.

Perhaps I'm dumb, but in my mind if Garcia were a stud, he'd find a way to score or at least assist even if he's being doubled. And, he misses lots of open shots that we need. I think he's good, but mainly against weaker defenders.

Last year we had Hawkins, Christie, Payne and Mitchell that could all do damage if you focused on Garcia too much. This year we have Garcia. Most coaches can find a way to minimize the efficiency of one guy if the others are not a big threat. Garcia seems unable to make the others better. Passing is just not his forte. Garcia is a really good #2 option.

Why would Ben be desperate?

Our administration, and therefore Coyle, want to lose. And Ben isn't stupid...he knows this.
They don't "want to lose". They are just not willing to put the effort it takes into committing to winning. There's a difference.
