I haven't been this excited and optimistic about Gopher hoops since mid-Tubby era!!! LFG!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In the end, we were fortunate enough to have "one of us" match up with the "big name coach/winning coach" checkbox. Medved showed this year that he is a big time coach. I love what I saw in the tournament with a team that was physically overmatched but simply played smarter and more skilled basketball than their opponents. I also love what I heard from his players after the game- they praised Medved for the whole experience while at CSU.

Great job by Coyle (my apologies to him for not believing in him getting it done a month back)!
Well, if coyle couldn't get Medved to mpls... like Garcia transferring and staying.

You probably need at least something to point to why you feel this true. I gave you head to head records...you gave me because I say so.
I'll add a second point Pitino has a MW regular season title and a MW conference Tournament title. Niko has one MW tournament title. Pitino also has an NIT Championship which is pretty significant.
So, 3 to 1 by that metric.
NIT titles very overrated. That being said, we need to figure out their NCAA tourney wins, Niko 2 and Pitino 1?

I'm fired up about this hire!!!!

We have a coach with a proven track record of building programs, developing players, improving funding at the programs he's been at, he's operated in a pre-and post-NIL world, etc. He's identified recruiting talent, he's developed a guy like Roddy into an NBA player and he loves the U (the latter is not a requirement but it is very helpful as he understands the drill around here).

We've got our guy, LFG!!!!!

GO NIKO!!!!!
I’m with you. I haven’t had a great feel for any newly hired coach since Clem. Monson was handcuffed, Tubby was one foot out the door, and all the others had major holes in their resume.

Niko on the other hand, as you note checks all the experience, recruiting, development, and winning boxes. The starting point is way above the others and I concur a “home run” is a real possibility.

I'm not disagreeing he has the best resume but is he a better coach than Richard Pitino?
Mountain West head to head favors Pitino. Pleased Medved is our coach.
Yes! I know you loved Richard and I very much didn't so we both have bias. Richard still has the High Profile last name so he's able to get better players.. but Nico I think is the better coach and instills more discipline within his players. Richard has never been able to do that..

Hi.
I guess I'm encouraged enough to return to posting after the Ben Johnson years. I'm still feeling myself around a landscape that has NIL as the dominate force in recruiting. I don't know if I ever will love college sports like I used to.

Nico is a good hire, but IIRC, Indiana & Iowa have just hired coaches that ranked higher on the Gopherhole board's want list. Still a quality hire.
I right there with you. The past few years have been rough (covid, NIL, poor play) and I hardly follow Gopher BB much anymore.

Hopefully this is the match that can get that fire burning once again.

Loved is too strong. I had several posts in his last Gopher season saying it was time for a change.
Still believe it was. Ben just wasn't the right hire. But, several people on here dismiss Richard as having no value, lousy coach who wouldn't have a job if it wasn't for his dad etc. I just think Richard definitely can coach. There are many coaches I'd hire before Richard if I was an AD at a Big Ten, SEC school.

But, he's been great at New Mexico. He was great at Florida International. He was great for the Gophers just about every year for 4 to 6 weeks and then the wheels came off....usually because of injuries or suspensions. Just defending that Richard is a good coach...maybe he will become great? Time will tell...

And he's a likable podcast guest, press conference guy.

All that said..Niko has a chance to be a home run hire.
