Needs to go back to wearing a letter sweater with the Block M. The 00 doesn't get it done.

How so? One of the best mascots in college sports IMHO. My badger fan father even agrees. Of course, who could like Bucky?

It's a joke... from another thread. We seem to be using December to bash EVERYTHING so there are plenty of threads sprouting up about not liking "RAH!", the first down announcement, Goldy's clothing, etc. etc.

No worries. I love Goldy.

Goldy (as depicted on merchandise) needs to go back to the old beady-eyed rat in sports gear instead of the current Teenage Mutant Ninja Gopher.

Assuming that's directed at me, you must be right because I'm not sure what the sarcasm is in reference to. Was it something on another thread?

Yeah, the numerous references to the Golden Gopher First Down cheer as being "bushleague" [sic].

Maroon and gold has to go too. Given these troubled times, I think people would rally around the Gopher program if they sported red, white, and blue uniforms.

(another test of the sarcasm meter... and probably only a matter of time before someone seriously suggests something like this)

I've actually read serious suggestions that the U should change its school colors. I wish I could remember where.

Got it, I saw the thread on the first down chant. Makes sense.

My question is "Do other schools' fans have these ridiculous discussions about whether their traditions pass muster?" I sometimes think we suffer from an inferiority complex in that regard. Our traditions are just as good as any other school's.

New colors: Infrared and ultraviolet. Can't see them, it's not my problem.

We let the smack talkers get under our skin. Our traditions are for us, not for them. Michigan has a tradition of the players all jumping up to touch a banner. It means a lot to Michigan fans, not so much to anyone else. But why should it mean anything to anyone else? If we tried to tell Michigan fans that touching the banner was lame, they would laugh at us. And we should do the same whenever some smack talker tries to bash the Gophers traditions.

I just wish they'd bring back angry Goldy - before the current smiling Goldy, there was angry Goldy, with his eyebrows furrowed and a sneer instead of a smile hiding behind those big azz teeth - he totally rocked, the logowear on campus and at the stadium looked 100x better(especially football, angry Goldy sneering while hanging onto teh pigskin and throwing that stiffarm was, well, just more believable.)

Bucky looked p#ssed off - part of his charm. Angry Goldy is what we need to combat this mean looking mangy beast from the east, not "Look at me, I'm high as a kite" Goldy.

Is that the same Goldy as the "Pumped up on steroids look" Goldy?

Just don't bring back the Goldy that was in that grainy film from the last Rose Bowl trip. It looked very much like the current Penn State mascot (which looks like it was sewed together at a class project in a jr. high home ec class).

Goldy is perfect. Do not dare mess with Goldy.

I suggested several months back that we get rid of the Gopher mascot and replace it with the Red Bull, to honor the 34th infantry division, and its over 600 days of sustained combat in WWII, the longest of any division of any Army during the conflict. It also NEVER LOST GROUND.

If that isn't a description of what football should be in Minnesota, I don't know what could.

How about the "Soviets" because they got their azz kicked and still won in the end, on a much larger scale. That could be quite an inspiration.

Red Bull

When the German army in Italy fought the 34th, they called them the "Red Devil" or "Red Bull". When the main German Army kept losing to the 34th, you know this was a great unit. Honoring these brave soldiers seems more honorable than honoring a cartoon rodent. It would also honor the University of Minnesota, Iowa and Nebraska, 3 of the main states that offered soldiers to this storied division. For that matter, the division we are in should be called the "Red Devil" for the same reason.

If you named the Gophers the Red Bull, people would think of the energy drink. I think it would be exploting rather than honoring anyway.

Exploiting? I think the families of the veterans of this state would be grateful and honored. Exploitation suggests we would benefit unfairly from the name change. Very doubtful. I know that the soldiers I know would be proud and suggest that this would be a very attractive way to honor their fellow soldiers. Why we want to perpetuate a low level newspaper dispute is beneath this great state. There is no honor in black ink wars.
