I have noticed all of the complaining that takes place on this board and I'm not saying that we don't have room for improvement. But I see a QB that has been converted from a TE playing his heart out and trying his very best. There are players playing through injuries such as KJ Maye and many of the DBs and OL. I have never witnessed one player loafing and not giving it their all. IMHO we have one of the best coaching staffs that we have had here in Minnesota in a long long time. It's gotten so bad that we have a thread devoted to bashing our QB who is giving it his all. IMHO this thread should be removed. We have one sports writer "who doesn't have a clue" calling for us to throw a true freshman that needs to develop into his role into the lion's den.

I know this is not going to be popular but how many of you have tried playing through an injury? How many of you have been put in as QB when the position you were recruited to play was not QB? How many of you have set in front of game film night after night trying to develop a successful game plan around injuries and other factors unknown to the general fan? I know that this is not going to be received well be some and I will be ridiculed for this post but I for one want to express my thanks to the coaches, staff and players for their efforts and the grit they showed in an adverse environment which I believe will prove out to be a very good Colorado State football team.

You outlined the very problem right now with your second sentence. The coaching staff has had 4 years of Leidner to change this. No one doubts that the coaching staff can turn around a program or that the players are playing their hearts out. The QB and WRs in this offense have not improved in 5 years under this coaching staff. That is a problem they need to correct.

Good post. I keep telling myself that the majority of Gopher fans aren't like the bitchers that take over after a game like yesterday. Two games into the season and we're doomed. Absolutely no clue as to what it takes to coach at this level but certain they have the answers. As for that POS writer from the Tribune, he displays his basic stupidity every time he does a column on the Gophers.

Nice Post. Liedner is not a converted TE, but it is otherwise a very good post.

Thanks for posting and I agree with much of what you said. These are not professional players and sometimes as fans it's really easy to be either very positive or negative about a player or the team. I'm proud as a gopher fan that the team fought their way back to win that game. The passing game and eventually the running game got on track a few times yesterday and Leidner and the receivers had some good connections. A little more patience will be rewarded.

We've got a lot to be thankful for. Consecutive eight-win seasons that we haven't had in a long while. A defense that rivals many programs. Coaching stability. Kids showing APR improvements year after year. No arrests for quite a while. A team that finishes plays.

Sure, we'd love to see better play on offense. Consider what we have now compared to four years ago. We'll get better with JK at the helm.

In this regard, Mitch was praised by the BTN commentators on "Final Drive" recap segment.

And I called it both a "nice" and a "very good" post. Not sure what the issue here is???

No issues. Sorry was just trying to defend initial statement, not argue semantics. Carry on

The backlash to the backlash.

Everyone wants the team to do well, and win "the right way". We all appreciate the efforts of the players and coaches but lets not get wrapped up in martyrdom. They are not fighting cancer, or dealing with a family member with dementia, or struggling to find work with little ones at home and wondering what the hell they're going to do. That is real, bonafide stress. I would say if they can't deal with the IMHO minor pressures of being amateur athletes then move along. I would wager most of us have played or coached at all sorts of levels.

Sorry if I upset anyone. Sometimes the narrative gets a little pious around here.

I think it's a underrepresented part of this game. For all the bad plays, bad throws, bad blocks, bad gameplans, and bad execution of said bad gameplans, this team and the coaches found a way to win.
I went down and congratulated the players after the game, the whole team rounded the stadium to give out high fives and thank the fans for coming.
Included in this were a very glossy eyed Lingen, a beet red faced and disheveled Leidner, a green shoulder helmet painted Richardson, a super pumped up defense, and a very gracious and humble coach kill. Those guys fought through all the crap and awfulness to win in the end.
Every game will not play out like this one. Gameplans will be better, passing will be up and down, players will get healthy or injured. However, the gut check they took and overcame yesterday shouldn't be discounted or diminished, and the character the show every day is something that needs to count too.

Thanks. I agree.

Although going through the stresses of intercollegiate sports is to set you up for the stresses of the rest of life.

Thanks for starting this thread. It's hard to tune out the bashers. Maybe if we just have a few more positive threads like this, it will be easier.

Even Coach Kill said the offense was bad so it seems appropriate to say they were bad.
Gopher fans, like all passionate fans, live on their emotions. Gotta take the opinions with a grain of salt.
Let's face it, for over 2 quarters our offense sucked on Saturday. Just speaking truth.

Do you guys think the coaches are taking it easy on these guys? They better be able to take some criticism, deserved or not. They better be able to tune out rubes like me telling them they aren't any good.

I'm not familiar with the world some of you seem to live in. And that's ok. It takes all types.

The problem is not speaking the truth but the god awful melt downs that occur here after they don't live up to what people expect. These are college kids who are working their tales off but that not enough for some of you. It certainly is alright to point out mistakes and problems but some of you go way beyond that. The most ironic part of that is that none of you or very few have probably played division one football. It is just a game.

Take into account the alcohol effect and self - esteem issues of an insecure fan base and you get melt down. Take it with a grain of salt.

You know full well though that there are a number of posters on this board that view any sort of criticism as a sky is falling meltdown. I guarantee the coaches are thrilled we won but very disappointed in the way the offense played on Saturday, not sure why fans are not allowed to feel the same way. You always have extremes on both sides but there are way too many posters that get bent out of shape anytime someone has anything even slightly negative to say about players or the program after a game.

These kind of posts baffle me. Can you imagine what would be written, said, or perhaps even done to Leidner himself or his residence if he was the Quarterback at a number of other schools around the country? Gopher fans are extremely tame in comparison to just about any fan base you can name. While the poster mentioned guys "giving it their all", I have not read one post criticizing Mitch's effort...just his performance. The entire offense performed very poorly yesterday and a message board is a place where fans can come and discuss that performance. If your opinion is that someone played bad, you should have the right to express that opinion and another poster should have the right to disagree with that opinion. I am not sure what the point of a message board is if it's not to discuss the teams performance, recruiting, and prospects for the future. It appears that you want every post to be some combination of "good job, good effort, Go Gophers!" which would create a pretty boring uninformative board.

Of course some people go too far in their criticisms of players (A.J. Barker is a prime example...a WALKON who contributed to the team), but if you think anything you've read on the GopherHole is bad then you haven't visited another teams message board. Look at some of the things said about Kirk Ferentz on Iowa boards...a guy who has accomplished more than every Gopher coach in my lifetime combined. We have a fan base that hasn't experienced any real success in decades and some think we're close to finally breaking through so it's not surprising that a performance like yesterday brought a lot of "negative" posts.

Can't speak for the OP, but from my perspective it's about trust and loyalty, mostly. Pompous Elitist would have us believe that just because someone played catch in their back yard, they know as much as our coaches. And, you trying to justify bad behavior by saying other teams' fans are worse is a big part of what's wrong with our declining society. Right and wrong are still right and wrong.
