Phil Miller is a great writer. His game write-ups were really entertaining at the beginning of the year until he got lazy towards the end of the season. From the NIU loss..

They sounded desperate for victory, like a thirsty band of vagabonds lost in the desert. And that was before Saturday.

"We need a win badly," linebacker Mike Rallis said on Tuesday. "Winning cures everything."

It appears that losing infects everything, too. What South Dakota inflicted, what USC inflamed, Northern Illinois exploded on Saturday. Mistake-ridden Minnesota saw firsthand what a truly effective running game looks like and dropped its third consecutive game, 34-23 to the NIU Huskies.

Oh yes, that's right: The Gophers' Big Ten season, featuring five different Top 25 teams, begins next Saturday, and as Brewster pointed out, "We're 0-0 in conference play." True enough, though only because Minnesota doesn't belong to the Great West, Pac-10 or Mid-American conferences.
 



I have no problem with Miller reporting this. My only minor complaint with Miller was over this week's Leach piece and that was about its timing. I thought that piece would have been better earlier in the process as opposed to this week when it appears a Leach hire has no chance of happening. I think such a piece earlier in the process would have helped Leach more as well.
