For the most part Phil Miller has done an excellent job since coming on board with the STrib. However the article about Adam Kelley's comments have no place in the newspaper and/or his blog. It is harmful and serves no purpose other than one persons agenda and has the potential to cause embarrassment to the UM .

I doubt if Kelley is a spokesperson for the players rather an isolated attempt to make Maturi look bad. Something that a lot of peps don't think he needs much assistance with.

If Miller did his homework and checked with the spokesperson(s) of the group to see if this was the position of the group and legit, then fine. I will retrack my call out.

I disagree. I think it's noteworthy this wackjob has been meddling with the coaching search. The tenor of SGF.com is certainly not inconsistent with the things Kelley said in the article, so their denial of culpability in this case is difficult for me to accept.

I disagree as well. This sort of behavior IS newsworthy. Also, we have this nebulous group (we don't know who they really represent) that appears to want Maturi gone. Other than that there is not much information. We have no idea what they are actually up to. For all we know Kelly could be very representative.

Phil is an excellent reporter... he would've been a moron to not run those comments... incredibly newsworthy.

Agree. I'm not as concerned about Miller reporting it as I am that Kelley actively contacted another school "warning" them that the Gophers might like to interview their coach. In other words, Kelley is actively attempting to sabotage the entire process. Makes me wonder how many other ADs he has contacted "warning" them about the Gophers looking for a new coach. He's apparently taken a personal vendetta against Maturi to the point of trying to make sure the Gophers don't get a good coach. In the future, any and all comments and actions Mr. Kelley takes as it relates to Gopher football should be examined VERY closely.

WHAT??? Thank god Miller wrote the article so we could see what Save Gopher Football is really about. Who knows how much damage they have done but it is clear this is their means of carrying out their pro-Trestman agenda.

Its a reporters job to report. Just because you don't like the news he has to report does not mean he is a bad reporter.

I disagree with the OP. Miller needed to write this article to expose Kelly and also savegopherfootball.com (I'm not buying the lack of connection).

So he should just write about carnations, kool-aid and free love? Unbelievable.

I hate that this is public as much as anyone. But I agree with everyone but the Bayfield on this. Better that Miller made it public so everyone can see the nonsense and make noise to drown it out. Plus as several have noted, its not Miller's job to avoid bad news.

Sorry, this isn't Iowa City or Gainesville. It is naive to expect 'the media' to sit on a story like that because it 'causes embarrassment' to the U. Part of it is the U's fault. Maturi's job performance put him in position to be called out. That said this group's tactics are pathetic. But neither the Strib or anyone else is obligated to ignore it.

Bayfield, I normally appreciate your views, but you could not be any more incorrect on this. There are many layers to this, amongsth them:

1. To think a former player contacting other athletic departments and portraying himself as a spokesman for a group of former players is not newsworthy is unfathomable.

2. The group in question has taken a very similar frontal, public approach. There is much consistency with the views and approaches of Kelly and SGF.

3. SGF has chosen to be public, yet hide its leaders and membership roster. This type of nefarious approach invites scrutiny.

4. SGF's response thus far has been single line e-mails to individuals. I will be watching to see if they disavow Kelly and his comments/approach on their website. It is deserving of a front page mention.

5. Miller has no agenda or axe to grind. He is a reporter, not an Alum or even native Minnesotan. I've found him to be very trustworthy and of high integrity, unlike some other local media players. I highly doubt an informed reporter would go to print with a link between Kelly and SGF without verifying said link.

I hope that Phil not only stands behind his story, but presses further with them. The local press has either ignored or treated this group with kid gloves thus far. Maybe they are who they claim to be, but further investigation is certainly warranted. Kudos to Phil Miller for a job well done. Sleazeball tactics such as those used by Kelly deserve to be brought to the harsh scrutiny of public gaze.

the only problem I have with the article is seems to imply that Kelly is part of Save the gophers. it states that Kelly is representing former players and then talks about the web site that is run by former players. I wrote to the site after Kellys stunt and got a response from Steve Nester stating that kelly is not part of their group

If he didn't write about it because it would bring embarrassment to the University, isn't that serving an agenda as well?

Doogie: is Patrick right about savegopherfootball being a "hire Trestman" site? If so why in the world hasn't this been officially reported? It's not as if they don't get their share of press, but if they have an agenda it's pretty pathetic that it isn't reported.

Rosen is campaigning for Trestman but he's upfront about it, no prblem with that. If savegopherfootball is just a front for a hiring Trestman why no confirmation?

It's not as if the hiring isn't getting any coverage.:banghead:

We had 4 of the save guys in for Ch. 5 piece three weeks ago... not all 4 were pushing for Trestman... I'm not sure that group has one collective voice when it comes to who they want. They are working with a great PR guy, but are still struggling to completely convey their message.

Great PR guy? Yikes I'd hate to think what everyone's perception of this group would be if they had hired a poor PR guy. Maybe I should switch professions and get into the PR biz...

Missed that. Who did they say they were pulling for? The struggling may be that they couldn't get people to get behind their chosen candidate. Without a name is does seem to be only a "we don't like Maturi" site. There already are plenty of those.

Let me reconfigure... a PR guy w/ a great background... but between him and the group, their message isn't being conveyed properly.

Right on Doogie. While the complaining, whining, disagreeing, agreeing, or whatever, Phil needs to report what is going on based on what he sees. We may not like it, we may get pi$$ed off, but the job of a reporter or blogger is to report. Good Bad and Ugly, that is the way it is.

Agreed but your last line also points out what a lousy job of reporting this was. Kelly is complaining about Maturi, the hiring process and Maturi's tactics but Miller doesn't ask who Kelly wants for the coaching job?

Miller to Mary Todd L. "Well Mrs. Lincoln, except for that, how did you enjoy the play?"

"The group’s chief goal, Kingsriter said, is to sit down with University President Bob Bruininks and discuss forming a search committee.

“Our movement is simply an attempt to try and restore some degree of trust in the process,” he said.
The group does not have a single leader, an official member list or a regular meeting schedule."

Huh?

How many other D-1 schools have a 'search committee' with former players on it?

Phil Miller's job is to write. He's already written about wild internet rumors, and everyone's favorite Pirate coach. If this coaching search hadn't gone on for so long maybe this article doesn't get written, but it has and Miller has a job to do. If it sometimes embarrasses the U than that's what they'll have to live with.

I didn't know we had so many former Gopher players with post concussion syndrome.

When thinking of savegopherfootball.com the old Herb Brooks adage comes to mind:

"You guys look like a monkey f'ing a football...."

Don't kill the messenger.

I've been very impressed with Phil Miller. He has had interesting write-ups about games and the coaching search.

It's not his fault that the Gophers one-time punter got liquored up and started acting like an idiot. It was a very newsworthy article. Don't kill the messenger.
