Hello, Gopher Fans!

This group of Huskers is making the trip to Minny for next Friday's matchup between the Gophers and Huskers. We'll stay out by the MofA, but plan on navigating the train system to and from downtown and over to campus.

What suggestions do you have on some can't miss spots for food, drink, and football in your city? Any campus favorites? We'll arrive to town about midday on Friday and will stay through the weekend. Wishing we could stick around for Vikings/Eagles, but will have to be on the road.

We are looking forward to checking off Huntington Bank Stadium and a competitive game between the Gophers and Huskers! All the best and thanks for your time.

Welcome! You’ll have a great time.

Campus should be fun pregame and you shouldnt have issues with fans. It’s not like Nebraska in terms of scale but fans do show up.

I like Stub and Herbs on campus pregame. The stadium has food and drink deals beforehand also.

My suggestion as far as the Light Rail (train) to and from the game, I think it works just fine pre-game but my experience taking it back to that area for a night game is a nightmare. The connection at the Vikings stadium (Blue Line) can be really hit and miss that time of night.

Even when it works great you are looking at an hour-long trip, but I have had it take over 2 hours once (no joke).

Keep in mind Paul McCartney is also playing at the Vikes Dome so it's going to be a cluster no matter what option you choose. Maybe that will mean they have more south bound Blue Line trains. However, if it was me, I would be strongly looking at Uber/Lyft from campus back to the MoA area.

If both events end at roughly the same time...Uffda.

As far as eating establishments, if you want to feel at home you should check out Lyon's Pub downtown which is only a block away from the Light Rail station. They even have a Husker flag outside.

Have fun.

There are some places closer to the stadium that are great with more of a campus vibe but in terms of a great variety with easy parking but still within walking distance... I recommend the Market at Malcolm Yards. It is a large food hall where anyone in your party should be able to find something they like to eat and you can pour your own beer whenever you want a refill. It is also less than a block from the Surly Brewery and a distillery so there are plenty of options to wander to and from. I can't get into our tailgate lot as early as I'd like on a work night so when we have Thursday or Friday games, we go to Malcolm Yards for food and drink prior to abbreviated tailgates. There was that season opener game a couple years ago vs Nebraska on a Thursday night and we saw plenty of Husker fans in both Surly and Malcolm.

It is about three blocks east of the stadium with plenty of free parking and not far from a rail stop.

USB Stadium has a big name concert the same night as the game. I would suggest using the Blue line from MOA very early and do some research on a pre game eating/drinking venue; there are a bunch within walking distance of the USB station. Then walk back to the USB station and take the Green line from USB over to Huntington Bank. The challenge will be after the game, which should end around 10:30 (7-10:30) and get you back to USB before 11:00. The concert probably gets out at the same time which means the USB train station where the Blue/Green intersect will be a madhouse with the schedule changing late at night. Having said that an Uber may be just as chaotic as the area will be packed with auto traffic. Just be safety conscious on the Blue line going back to MOA; shouldn't be a problem as you will have many riders, but pay attention.

What suggestions do you have…
One suggestion is to not call it “Minny”

Not trying to sound dickish, or confrontational at all. I married a Lincoln native and Nebraska alum, and don’t have any hate for the Huskers. It’s just that about 98% of us HATE that name.

Or take the Green Line East after the game and grab a night cap in St. Paul and the Lyft/Uber back to the MOA.

How early do you get to sterbs to be able to get in? Every time I try (even 2hrs early) you can't get in.

Herbie,
You don’t mention your age/expectations. If you are on the younger side “Sally’s” is a blast. It will be a tight fit but drinks are flowing and folks will be wearing their colors.

Also, when I have gone to away games, I like to walk the tailgate lots. No doubt you will find some fun minded gopher tailgaters and I am sure there will be plenty of Nebraska tailgates as well.

My guess is that school (Nebraska) has a recommended bar if you want like minded folks.

Welcome! I hope the MN fans are as welcoming to you as Cornhuskers were to me a few years ago.

Confirm: No Minny.

No offense intended with the Minny comment - my apologies.

We are a group of young parents (30's-40's and the kids will be staying in NE) trying to make at least one trip to an opposing B1G stadium every season until we hit them all. Minneapolis (I'm learning already!) is this year's target city. We are much more interested in the local flair (Sallys, Stub & Herbs, Lyon's all look awesome), as well as planning to hit some craft breweries throughout the day on Saturday.

Minnesota fans are great and we are looking forward to the hospitality, while welcoming the friendly banter.

The travel tips are greatly appreciated, as well! We have spent some time in The Cities, but not enough to know these tips and tricks. Thank you. We are excited to be back!

Wait, people actually expect to get inside? I mean, I know it happens, but don't expect it. :)

Also, take cash to Stub & Herb's and Buffalo Wild Wings -- they're cash only outside. And, the drink lines will be long. I'm not trying to be critical; we go to both and like them.

Good call on BWW. Fun spot and if you have cash you can get a beer fairly quickly.

Herbiehusked. Also agree on Surlys…great brewery and there is a fun distillery across the street.

Most Minnesotans (but not all) I know also dislike the "Minny" label. I'd put it at about 65% dislike, 10% like, and 25% don't notice or ask "what is the fuss about?"

It gets used A LOT by people outside of Minnesota but it is very rare to hear a Minnesotan say something like "I'm heading back to Minny next week."

Your plan and tradition to hit all the stadiums sounds awesome. My wife and I have been knocking off stadiums here and there (including Memorial Stadium, where we had a fantastic time tailgating after getting advice from local fans in just the way you are asking here), but still have a ways to go.

Here's some background as to why I mentioned Lyon's Pub to begin with:

When the Big 10 Basketball Tourney was here a couple of years ago, Big Red really took over the place that weekend.

As others have mentioned, near The Market at Malcom Yards and Surly is O'Shaughnessy Distilling Co. (created by U of M grads). Likely not a great hang pre-game, but if it works with your timeline (depending on how early you get to campus area), a tour there would be recommended. Great tour, and a great tasting room in the basement.

I am roughly your same age and have hit all the current locations in the B1G the Gophers have played (unfortunately won't be hitting Oregon this year due to extenuating circumstances). I applaud you on your mission. You are in for a treat at Huntington Bank Stadium in that we are very different than every other B1G stadium (at least until Northwestern's new stadium is done). I remember the food lines and bathroom lines at Memorial Stadium being pretty long, which is pretty similar to every other B1G location. As well as miniscule bench sizes, although not as bad as Ohio Stadium. "The Bank" as we call it has very generous seat/aisle sizes, and pretty good concourse width/flow. And there isn't a bad seat in the place. I feel we're a pretty accommodating group of fans and hope you have fun (although in a losing effort)!

O'Shaughnessy and Surly are usually packed, but a moderate walk to the stadium.

Beer: Surly Brewing

Whiskey/ cocktails: O'SHAUGHNESSY DISTILLING CO

You can get food at both as well.

Since Nebraskan's are no strangers to great steaks, we have two top notch steakhouses in Downtown Minneapolis (Not chain restaurants):

Manny's _ Spendy!

Murray's _ Also Spendy

The Vikings play the Eagles on the 19th, so you could do a sports double.

Also of note, Minneapolis is the city of lakes. There are some nice lakes around the city if you want to do so walks around the city. That's free of course.

You could also “railgate”, get on the train near the mall and stay on the train until the first stop after the VA Hospital.

First stop after the VA, you can wander over to the Minnehaha Falls, and it’s a nice park and then head into The Tipsy Steer

Back on the train to the next stop and head into Venn Brewing, one more stop brings you to The Cardinal (I hear they have good burgers but never had one there). Keep going to Lake Street Midtown and visit Arbeiter Brewing Company. Then Franklin, and probably have to head to “The Joint”.

Then you can make a decision from there, either back on the train and head downtown for a ton of options, or walk up Cedar about 15 minutes to the Seven Corners area, almost on campus, but on the West Bank of the Mississippi River with a lot of options, but that offers you a nice opportunity to walk the Washington bridge over to the East Campus where Dinkytown and Stadium Village are, and of course The Brick House, my preferred nomenclature for our stadium.

I never use the term Minny but it also doesn't bother me at all when people do. I never understood why it bothers people so much.

To me its always sounded like a put down. I usually assume when someone here uses it they are trolling. Minnesota natives don't really use the term so you can tell people that say it aren't "one of us". Just like when people here call Wisconsin "Wisky".

Just don't call us Minnie...:p

Have Huskers on Mrs. Billd's side of the family. Been to Lincoln several times with them (really liked the trip in 2014!) and hosted the family Reds up here too.

Lots of good suggestions. Safe travels in a week.

I’m living the same life as you as far as age and kids.

Craft breweries:
Fair State Brewing
Falling Knife
Surly (walkable from stadium but its a walk)
