247's Ross Uglem, Publisher of Bison Report (NDSU) and Packer Report, and contributor to GoPowercat (K-State) stops by to offer some of his popular film analysis on Minnesota's hiring of former Utah State offensive coordinator Mike Sanford. Uglem has been scouting for pre-draft publications since 2013 and breaking down NCAA and NFL film since 2014.

A look at the potential 2020 Gophers offense under Mike Sanford

I hope Simon will be the one calling the plays and Sanford just focuses on developing TM. What we have now (RPO) works, just keep at it. Concerned that this Sanford guy will come in and throw all this BS at TM and confuse him even more.

Sanford has worked at ND and Stanford but he had great players to work with. His success at those places were not all him. When he was at WKY and at Utah State, he pretty much sucked. His “recruiting talents” is yet to be determined.

When I interview for a new team member for my work, the number one red flag in a resume for me as an employer is how a candidate jumps jobs. This Sanford guy’s resume has nothing but red flags all over it. Not only he’s jumping to a new job every year, but none of his accomplishments were that impressive AND there weren’t any “trend of improvement”, if anything his trend went from OK to poor.

I know time will tell but I’m not a fan of this guy, how he looks, where he worked, what he has done, and what potentially he could bring for us.

I would’ve voted for promoting Simon to sole OC and hire an awesome QB coach. If we end up 6-7 next year, it’ll be this Sanford dude’s fault! Yup? Just him.

At what point was Morgan confused? Really, this comment alone shows a troll agenda.

Aren’t you going to blame the transfer punter from middle Tennessee state too?

I'm really hoping that we look a LOT like how we looked in the Outback Bowl.

If it isn't broken ...

And as far as I understand, Fleck has basically mandated that is how it is going to be.

Saban was asked how he deals with a revolving door of coordinators and his response was basically there is a firm understanding he hires someone to coach up his system, not bring in a new system and playbook. The exception to that was of course when Alabama committed to the spread several years back, a mission LSU committed to last year after bringing in a young consultant from the NFL.

My guess is PJF has a similar understanding with Sanford that it’s easier for one guy to adapt than to train an entire team and staff to change to Sanford’s offense which by recent history was less than stellar anyway. Yeah, it’s a curious hire but there must be some elite intangibles or coaching ability PJF really likes otherwise the hire doesn’t make sense. Have to wait and see what happens and it will likely be fine but agree it does introduce more uncertainty than we would’ve liked. If it ain’t broke...

My guess is that he's primarily a QB coach and recruiter, that Simon will handle the play calling.

Read the article, it says a little on how Sanford may implement motions and potentially allow TM to audible plays.

C'mon, common sense, we get a new OC, if Fleck allows him to implement new things, more things will be added.

Troll agenda? If you consider a fan concerned about our team "troll agenda" then OK...I've got a "troll agenda"

2 words: ball control. So to keep a possibly shaky defense off the field.

You said "confuse TM even more" and I asked when TM was confused. Answer or stfu

I doubt they apply much change to what's working.

Concerning the article, I did love t h e analysis of the play where the left side of the line blocked for stretch play and right side for RPO slant. I certainly hadn't caught that during the season.

Like the offense under PJ Fleck.
I won't take it to Vegas, but I would be very surprised if the Gophers offense next season looks at all (formations/X's and O's wise) like Utah State's did this season

C'mon Philly...lets not act tough on here with "stfu", not very 2020 new year new you now is it?

TM seem confused many times during this season...like when he threw INTs and all those time you and I both screamed at the TV when he made dumb plays.... He is in tune and on point most of the time that's why we're 11-2 this season, but to say that he wasn't confused at all this season.....you must be confused.

Sounds like Sanford will calling plays....

...In addition to Sanford’s hiring, the football program also announced that Matt Simon has been promoted to co-offensive coordinator. Simon will continue to coach wide receivers as well.

Despite Simon’s promotion, Sanford will serve as the Golden Gophers’ primary in-game playcaller....

I'm not sure I find it credible at this time that John Taylor of NBC Sports has a scoop that no one else, even GI Ryan Burns, has.

"
We're still waiting to hear if Matt Simon or Mike Sanford Jr. is going to be calling the plays, but if only for quarterback development and recruiting purposes, Sanford appears on par with Kirk Ciarrocca in quarterback development and an upgrade on the recruiting trail.
"

Sanford is the “Offensive coordinator.” Simon is the “Co-Offensive Coordinator.” One of them has a lot of experience running an offense and calling plays. The other does not. I think it’s pretty clear.

Huh? Both of them are co-offensive coordinators.

No:
"Co-" - prefix that means "joint, jointly"
"Joint" - adj. "shared, held, or made by two or more people, parties, or organizations together."

Either gophersports.com fouled it up, or else PJ is just playing absurd word games for the sake of appearances.

Again, I guess I have no problem that he might've had to give Sanford this or that title in order to convince him to come here, and/or to get him more money.

That's fine. However, I don't believe Matt Simon stays, title or no, unless he has at least some of the play calling duties.

I'm going with Ryan Burns, whose article was written this morning, until proven otherwise

Change is inevitable, and the Gophers have to adapt and use that as an opportunity for improvement. So, relax. Obviously, the Gophers see Sanford as a good fit. I am sure PJ Fleck made it very clear how he wants the offense run. I think Sanford and Simon will put in some new kinks to improve their version of RPO based on personnel. Ciarrocca was successful because he knows how to tap the strengths of his players, and adapt and design plays accordingly. Success is in the detailed work and hours of film work. This is a learning opportunity for Simon, the understudy.

I am excited to see what plays and adjustments/improvements Sanford can incorporate into the Gophers' RPO repertoire. The most important thing is that PJ Fleck's organization is committed to success and improvement of coaches and players.

This is opportunity for growth. Of course, growth is fraught with danger. But, you work the details and collaborate with your coaches. Your coaches closely evaluate your players to determine their strengths and weaknesses. You make adaptations based on personnel. You work to help them continually improve in all facets of their life as student athletes. That is how you build a winning team. Not by what their resume or star ratings say. What kind of attitude and will to succeed do they have? People like PJ Fleck seem to have a very good understanding of human nature. They know how to flip switches to make people and organizations become successful.

It is no accident that a team with only 5 4-Star players was able to beat a team loaded with 4 5-Star and multiple 4-Star players. The Gophers have become a well-prepared and a united well-oiled team in all sense of the word going into the Outback Bowl.

As someone has said, Sanford has developed QBs and is a good recruiter which are added bonuses. Let's give him the benefit of the doubt. He may surprise.

You seem to look at improvements as linear. I prefer PJ Fleck's Zig-zag chart. Kirk Ciarrocca failed miserably at Rutgers and Schiano fired him. So that is a red flag that you are looking for? Failure is growth. You learn a lot more from your failures.

In my lifetime, HR always seem to line people with perfect resumes. You know what. Those weren't the kind of people you necessarily want. They leave a lot of good candidates out.

PJ Fleck said on WCCO this morning that Mike Sanford will call the plays. that is a direct quote.

He did say he sees the offense as more of a group effort. Simon will have a lot of input, but Sanford will be the primary play-caller.

Well, that was fast.

Fine, I was wrong and stand corrected. Thank you.

I still however refuse to believe that Simon has received no upgrade in duties, at all, from his passing-game coordinator position in 2019. He has been given more responsibility for the offense, somehow, than he had during this year's regular season.

Also (minor) shame on PJ, for misuse of the English language. The correct title would have been "assistant offensive coordinator", if there is in-fact a primary. You can't have a singular, primary of something AND have a co- of that thing. How silly

There aren’t many offensive coordinators that have a long track record of amazing results and accolades. They typically become head coaches pretty quickly.

It’s not so much misuse but in part is adding a title that allows PJ to pay him significantly more and retain him. He’s obviously being groomed as a full OC down the road.

You are of course correct. I'll just have to find a way to live with it. LOL like what I think amounts to a hill of beans
