How were Brewsters classes at NC compared to those at Texas?

Did Texas have anything to do with his "recruiting" ability? How did NC rank when he and Mack were there compared to their days at Texas? I know he recruited Peppers, but how were the classes as a whole?

How were Texas' ratings pre-Brown to the Brown era?

Interesting question. Looking it up Mack Brown took over UNC in 1988 and went 1-10 that year and again in '89. The team showed improvement in their records each of the following years going 6-4-1, 7-4 and in 1992 9-3. They finished the season ranked from 1992 - '95.

Brewster came onto the staff in '88 as an unpaid volunteer and by '89 became the special teams coach/recruiting coordinator. According to Allen Wallace's rankings (full disclosure, I got this from a husker board seems legit though) UNC had not been ranked in the top 25 in recruiting before 1989. In '89 UNC's class is ranked 15 and the next year 9th and 18th in 1991, 22nd in 1992 and out of the top 25 in 1993.

Drawing conclusions from this or comparisons to his recruiting at MN is a stretch. First of all, he was a recruiting coordinator there and is a coach here (where he still recruits but you would think does other things too.) Second North Carolina has a different player pool than MN. Etc. Etc.

It is interesting that Brewster had his best classes the first couple years Mack Brown was there while the team's record was improving. Arguably 1992 was the best year of the Mack Brown era, when they won the Peach Bowl and tied Georgia Tech (National Champs), but didn't seem to show huge benefits from it with Brewster's 'worst' class to date ranked 22. In 1993 UNC finished out of the top 25 in recruiting, but returned the following year.

Like I said I'm personally not drawing conclusions from this because there are too many variables but I wanted something else to do besides homework so I thought I'd look it up and share what I found.

Texas recruiting is much different today than it was when Mack Brown (and Brewster) got there. UT was always the big dog in Texas but Brown & Brewster developed the system that is in place today and took UT to a whole different level.

He talked about this after his first big class here, when asked why he thought he did so well. He said the same thing happened at NC. He was able to sell playing time and a potential. he said it actually was tougher years three and on as he could no longer sell that and success hadn't yet occured. he thought he'd have the same experience here. And that's what we are seeing. We may be unhappy with some of the talent we have, but we are set almost three deep everywhere. It's going to be real tough for new guys to get the kind of reps they were able to get the last few years. And look at how negative everything is now. I think this is how recruiting goes.

Then the kids from those first classes mature and you have a good year or two and you're able to recruit again based on success. But then the down recruiting years mature and you have to survive the lull without losing the recruiting. It's a frikken ten year process. It's what makes building a program so tough. How many coaches actually hang in the same place that long?

Geez...now it's a ten year process...gotta love a know nothing fraud when you schnoods one!

Hey Trollope Schnoods please elaborate on this negativity you speak of...why do you think everything is soooo negative? Additionally, could you please state date and time of the quote when Brew stated that it was tougher to recruit in year three...your B.S. is magnificent fertilizer, I would like to know where I can get some.

No BS with Schnoodler. He is a realist. Most Gopher fans have no real understanding of real college football. The benefit of being a fatalist is you don't need any patience or understanding of the work ethnic required in the building process of a competitive football program. Those who don't remember Brewster saying this either haven't been following the process or have select memory loss. Congrats either way.
