How is 17-11 w/o your best player a bad year?

I can't believe what I am reading, the Gophers are 5-10 in conference play and it's NOT a bad year? What the hell qualifies as "bad"?

1. If the Gophers simply won the games they were favored in this years they would be in the tournament as of today
2. The Gophers are not 17-11 without their best player, they are closer to .500 without Mbakwe (not going to look up how many games he played in)
3. Iowa has found a way to win 7 conference games, if Tubby can't outperform Iowa without his best player, then that speaks poorly about either his coaching or his recruiting... you choose

I knew this year was going to be a dogfight to make the dance. When the Beast went down I heard the fat lady sing. So I spent alot of time looking at our new players. I spotted EE as a Dutcher big right away, which Bobby Knight verified on a broadcast. Joe was much better than I hoped for and a potential go to scorer. Huge Mo I didn't see quite enough of as a freshman to be able to project, other than he will be a solid B1G player. Good passer, soft touch, takes up space. Oto is more versatile than I was led to believe. Dre has been the biggest disappointment, but potentially the best. Very difficult transition to PG. Once again a potential go to scorer, but will at least score enough to be a solid B1G PG. I like both new recruits alot.

Being a Gopher fan all my life I have learned to be patient. The program is going in the right direction. Go to the dance next year, contend for the title the next two. Very few Gophers have ever made a major impact as freshman, often it takes until their junior year. The chance to play so much this year has moved the learning curve forward.

Remember, the ignore list is your friend.

To many people, making the dance is all that counts I guess.

Finish in seventh or eighth in conference, make the dance, and it's a successful season.

Maybe it's that 'participation ribbon' mentality.

Give me making the dance every single time. Why is Izzo a better coach than Bo Ryan? NCAA tourney success. Give me tourney wins over regular season conference wins every single day of the week.

The last I saw the Gophers are 17-11 overall, much higher than .500 my friend, three more wins gets them in the dance and that is a successful season...this certainly is not a bad year.... Go Gophers!!

They are really about 6-11 because at least 10 of the games were glorified scrimmages at home.

So what you're saying is a good run in the post-season can make up for a bad season?

I guess you could put it that way lol

+1 I evaluate coaches and seasons using the following criteria:
1. Whether we make and how deep we go in the postseason (making tournament>winning NIT)
2. How deep we go in B1G tournament
3. How high we finish in regular season B1G standings
4. Record against Wisconsin and Iowa (its a distant fourth, but I really like beating those two teams)

Obviously, this all comes with the caveat that for success at the above to count, the coach/program needs to not screw up off the court stuff bad enough to have wins vacated.

Purdue lost their best player last year at the start of the season. Went 13-5 in conference. If your are only good enough to attract 1 great player, that's a problem. Tubby is what he is. He is like Bob Dylan, he has fooled the world. This is just the way its going to be. If you think it is going to be different, you are delusional. There is absolutely nothing to indicate that this will change. It will be two more years of this and then the change will happen. Rip off the "band-aid" and lets move on. Ridiculous.

Mid major Matt has been at Purdue 7 years and through his first five seasons he had a conference win % of .605 and reach the 2nd round and sweet 16 twice.

And what was Purdue like before he got there?

You could play this game all day but either a guy can coach or not

As a completely non-minnesota person I think tubby can coach and all the close losses indicate that he can and Minnesota is close.

His teams play the game the right way. Some roster turnover and injuries have set him back early in his tenure, but it seems to me he has a young roster that will be much improved next season after battling hard throughout this one.

As a completely outside observer, I also find calls for flip saunders beyond comical....guy hasn't coached in college since the 80's while you have a coach who knows what he is doing.

If the record is the same in 2 years I agree it's time to evaluate.

But looking at the entire picture this season I feel the team has performed admirably, though the record could be better.

The big 10 is really tough this year and this team is very competitive.

Patience....

Keady and Monson had the exact same win % over their last 5 years, last two years conference win %, Keady .313 and Monson .469.

I'll be watching the game closely today.

So far tough defense and running good offensive sets.

Poor decision on that inbounds pass. That's on the player though.

2 misses inside. Gotta convert those.

And you can't leave Indiana open at the 3 point line.

This should be a very competitive game.

Guys have got to make shots. Too many missed open looks and shots around the rim.

I'm as disappointed in Tubby's record as the next guy and I'm not defending him or saying it's been a good year. However, I have enjoyed watching more this year than I have in quite a while. I like the upbeat style and somewhat better guard play. We have played well against a number of quality teams. We have more weapons than we have had in a while. IMHO the problem is our youth when we get into a close game late, especially when the other team is superior like MSU. Like football we will not recruit 5 star players unless a local kid wants to play near home so we need to get the kids we recruit to be jrs and srs and then hope they improved and show leadership to the younger players. Even though I was disappointed in the way Rodney ended the MSU game, I'm pleased with how much better he has played overall this year. If we can keep the both Hollins, Coleman, EE, Oto, Mo for another year or two, we should either be in the conference race, or we should be ready for a new coaching direction.

THIS IS A CLASSIC POST. "I like the upbeat style..."

Sorry, but 5-11 is a bad conference record. I admire the positive attitude of some posters trying to spin this into some sort of qualified success, but 5-11 speaks for itself.

Tubby must go. NOW! This program has been in the doldrums for years now under him, and there are simply no excuses. A complete housecleaning is in order. We've gotten a new president, and that's step one. But many more steps are needed.

Today was a total disgrace to the University.

Say whatever you want about Tubby, but for chrissakes, leave Dylan out of this.

Delusional at being kind..... . There are some places on this site where people talk of Rodney Williams getting drafted by the an NBA team!
