Why is this already considered a coaching "mess"? We are like 36 hours post dismissal and declaring a "mess" already? I don't believe it's a mess, and I believe just about anyone the Gophers hire will be granted an audience with 2 of the Big 3. From everything I've heard, Tyus is going to Kentucky or a similar school with eyes on a quick jump to the NBA.

Not a mess; Tubby's agent likely keeps a core group of pro-Tubby posters active on the two main boards, IMO

I will only be satisfied if Shaka or Flip are the 2.5 million bounty for Tubby's head.

You sound like one of those bitter administrators. Why don't you chill out until we figure out who is coach, then you can rip these moves all you want.

I understand Phil Jackson flew into town this afternoon.

+1. I think he is the artist formally known as Rick Mons!!!

That- if true would be enough to tip the balance. No one should complain if it's Smart or Flip - either one would be great. However, it's my feeling that Flip has the best chance with the big 3, has the endorsement of recruit Ellis, has the backing of local boosters, has the buy in of past players and would have an offense to deal with the Big Ten. He could use the Villa 7 to help with getting the prime assistants in here to complete the team.

I think it will go Shaka, Buzz, Stevens, maybe Grant and maybe the FGCU guy and then Flip. Personally, wouldn't mind any of them. I obviously prefer some to others, but all would be a solid hire IMO.

I wouldn't rule out Flip as an assistant though in some role to one of them though either.

Flip is not going to be an assistant. He's got better things to do. Not to mention a coach wouldn't want someone like Flip as an assistant because if things went south, fans would start demanding Flip take over. Kind of like the saying the back up QB is always the most popular guy on the team.

How do you think this latest coaching news will effect bringing in Travis, Vaughn and Jones?

I would be very surprised if we landed all 3, I would be very surprised if we landed 2. I truly think Vaughn is the only guy we get and I'm ok with that. Obviously all 3 would be amazing, I just don't believe any scenario lands more than Vaughn

A. This isn't a "mess". This is fixing a problem. The "mess" was what has happened over the last 3 years.

B. Regardless of who we hire, we now have a better chance of landing these guys than we did 4 days ago.

I could easily imagine this helping us, regardless of hire. Think about Tubby's best classes- early on. You can sell players and fan on enthusiasm and hope for the program when you're just starting, and that can be very powerful. Kinda a "help us start out new thing". It's early enough that a new coach has plenty of time to establish a relationship and show them how important they are by arranging to meet with them withing a few days of hiring.

But, obviously, certain names would be able to sell more than just renewed program enthusiasm and hope, and that would be ideal.

Oh, and also, I don't view this as a "mess". It hasn't even been 36 hours.
Part of that wa sbecause the coach was Tubby I remember White saying he wasn't even considering Minnesota until Tubby came in, if we get a ho hum mid major coach that might excite 3 star recruits, but not the big three

I don't see him letting that out of the bag even if it were the case. But I can easily see why he'd feel that way. Flip has had some pretty good point guards through his time with the Wolves and Pistons (Marbury, Brandon, Cassell, Billups, even had T-Hud playing well for a minute haha), he knows the position and for Tyus, that's gotta be awfully attractive.

Not to hijack, but I've seen the names on the 2014 rotation response and what is the status of Ellis and Foster? Are they still solid commits after the coaching change?

Flip probably gives us the best chance at Tyus, but I doubt it's that large of a difference. With or without Flip, I'd say it's under 25% chance Tyus ends up at the U. There is a bigger issue, Tyus is likely not going to stick around very long. He could very well leave the same year as Elliason and Dre.

SO while this must factor into the process, it needs to be put into some perspective.

As far as Vaughn and Travis, I don't think it really matters. I think our chances are about the same.

I think we need to accept that we won't be getting any of the Big 3. Time to focus on guys like Alex Illikainen.

That is the interestin question. Maybe what kind of chance did the Gophers have anyway? I think the Gophers will have about the same chances to sign member of the Big as they did before. Travis and Vaughn clearly a better chance than Jones but only time will tell. I am still confused by recruiting these days when so many of the top guys only want to go to a few schools but they want to go together. It would be great to get all 3 of these kids but it wont be the end of the road with or without them the Gophers need to find a way to win. What happens if the new coach is lucky enough to sign all three and in the end neither contribute to a winner before leaving school? In the end you must win period.

Wow. Should have kept the Tubster in that case. Are you saying that we now cannot hire a coach that can create enough excitement to get even one of three hometown kids to stay? If that's the case then we are really in tough shape.
The right hire can get one or more.

More or less, yes that is what I'm saying. Brad Stevens and Buzz Williams are not coming here and even if they were, I'm not sure that would even be enough to get the Big 3 to stay home. Remember who we are going up against; Coach K, Roy, Izzo, and Cal have been recruiting these kids for years. Our new coach will be jumping into the game at the last hour, which is never ideal, especially when you are going up against the very best programs in the country. I'm not holding my breath.

And no, we should not have kept Tubby. Tubby wouldn't have gotten any of the Big 3 either. The goal is to get a coach that can progress the program enough to get the next big batch of in-state recruits.

I don't think tubby would have locked up tyus but I think Vaughn was pretty much a sure thing...

What will be interesting is to see how the new coach divvies up minutes. I can't imagine anyone other than Tubby would allow Oto on the floor for anything more than mop up time. With Mav as the only "true" pg he'll probably still get minutes but I can't imagine the new coach being too happy about that.
