How do you think this latest coaching news will effect bringing in Travis, Vaughn and Jones?

Depends.

If the hire is a big name they already know, little impact. (Shaka or Flip come to mind)

If it is a relative unknown, the longer it drags out the less time they have to build a relationship. (Any other mid major or assistant coach)

Just seems we are so far behind already. Izzo flies in the same day as the Spartans reach the sweet 16 to watch Tyus in the state final.

UNC brings their entire staff to visit Vaughn today.

I think we have to land a big timer to even get back into the race!

I'd agree. Flip or Shaka give us the best immediate chance since they are big names.

An up and comer that isn't from Duke, UNC, UK, or MSU (or any school already recruiting these guys) would be at a huge disadvantage. The FGCU guy might be okay too as they are huge now, not sure on that though.

I could easily imagine this helping us, regardless of hire. Think about Tubby's best classes- early on. You can sell players and fan on enthusiasm and hope for the program when you're just starting, and that can be very powerful. Kinda a "help us start out new thing". It's early enough that a new coach has plenty of time to establish a relationship and show them how important they are by arranging to meet with them withing a few days of hiring.

But, obviously, certain names would be able to sell more than just renewed program enthusiasm and hope, and that would be ideal.

Oh, and also, I don't view this as a "mess". It hasn't even been 36 hours.

We weren't going to get them with Tubby, so this can't hurt...

I hate to be a buzzkill, but these 3 players have been recruited for over a year, or longer, by the top programs in the country. With Tubby, I felt the U had 0% chance to land any of the 3. And even with a new coach, I put the chance of landing any of the 3 at maybe 10% tops. It would have to be an incredibly dynamic coach to come in at the last minute and turn everything around.

Bottom line - Duke, Carolina, et al are established winning programs, on national TV, with the best facilities money can buy. The U is not an established program, rarely gets on national TV, and has old or non-existent facilities. Jones, Vaughn and Travis can go anywhere they want. Other than appealing to hometown pride, what does the U really have to offer?

My 1 shot - if any of these players is a bit of a gambler, sell them on the idea of a long shot - jumping in and being the hero that takes the U from barely relevant to in the spotlight overnight. Maybe that kind of a challenge might appeal to one of them. But it's a real long shot, at best.

Thankfully his sources aren't the same ones you used when you insisted Tubby wasn't going anywhere.

My sources didn't think we would spend 2.5 million to let go of a good coach in order to hire an average one not named Smart.

And you know that how? Do you have "sources"?

Use your head Parski. If Tubby had a real shot at the big 3 do you think they would have paid $2.5 to fire him? No chance.

Flip or Shaka or Buzz are the best shots we have at the recruits.

Think so huh...we will see. Sounds like you're setting yourself up for disappointment....thinking those are the two and we will get one of them. Buzz...lol weak.

Some of us trust our AD more than we trust you, believe it or not.

LOL...I could really care less who you trust. But you better trust him...he's all you have..and he just spent 2.5 million.

I'm counting three in my post. But none the less- if we get one of those three will you be willing to admit that we are better off than with Tubby?

Undecided about whether Flip or Shaka would get the Big 3.

What's more likely Vaughn commits and gets Jones and Travis to do the same, or Jones commits and gets Vaughn and Travis to do the same?

My pants got a bit tighter, despite the fact that EE seems to me like a terrible fit in a havoc-style system. Though he definitely doesn't lack hustle.

I will only be satisfied if Shaka or Flip are the 2.5 million bounty for Tubby's head.

Don't forget that Shaka would have Mo down to 265 by then...........

Seriously, one of my concerns with Tubby was the lack of apparent change in conditioning and muscle on a lot of these guys over the summer. Clem would have muscled up Rodney -no doubt in my mind. Anyone recall Walter Bond coming in as a fatty and leaving looking like superman? That was typical of Clem's program.
Put Mo in the right program and there is a player in there.

First, why did you use the term "mess" to describe the current coaching situation. Unresolved, sure (at least to us peons, but maybe not behind the scenes), but not a mess.

Second, I think Tubby had lost favor with the "Big-3". In my opinion, I would have been surprised if maybe one signed, despite Tubby (not because of him), simply because he wanted to play in front of the hometown crowd. Now, with a new coach soon to be named, there is EXCITEMENT! We have the Big-3's attention and if Woody delivers with a high profile coach (and I think he will) we are way ahead of the game.

Coaching mess eliminated with Teague's move yesterday, but good thread title!
