How about a Discussion on who would be a good replacement for Maturi

Bob Stein.

Bob would make the necessary D1 cuts for the NON-Rev sports needed. Lets face the facts folks, cutting sports is difficult. Cuts are required to 1) balance the budget, 2) direct funding focused on sports that produce revenue to fund the department, and 3) to Synch up with Minnesota priorities.

Quite honestly, most Minnesotans don't give a rats ass about team rowing, Golf, baseball, etc. This is a public tax payor funded University. Cuts and tough decisions need to be made while balancing title 9 requirements. Wisconsin, Texas, Florida, OSU have all had to make some difficult and wise decisions regarding Athletic programs. Bob Stein would be the right person to make those necessary decisions.

I can promise you one thing. If Stein were the AD, we would never have to to worry about support for football and all other revenue sports. The administrators at the U are scared of Stein because they know he would do what is best for the University and that may mean cutting some sports/staff. They are very comfortable with the way things are under Maturi because they know that nobody is held accountable over there. To set our athletic department on the right course, he U needs to clean house from the top down and change the current attitude of mediocrity. Whether this will happen or not is anyone's guess, but is largely Kaler's decision.

As for his tenure with the wolves, I think it is unfair to judge Stein's administrative skills based on his time as President. For one, he was not only charged with carrying out all normal presidential duties that go along with running a pro sports organization, he was also burdened with the task of raising about 100 million to support the building of the target center at the same time. Dealing with state legislature, city planners, and basically learning on the job being that the wolves were an expansion franchise with new staff/coaches/owners/etc.. Stein performed admirably while basically having 2 full time jobs at once. It also doesn't help when we luck out in the draft and get Christian Laettner instead of Shaq..

There is no denying the man is smart and a damn hard worker. 2X academic all American at the U and graduating from law school in only 3 years WHILE playing for the KC Chiefs. Many attribute Stein's strong backing from former players to the fact that he was an "M" man and great player, but the man is qualified as well.

Got it, discard anywhere Stein hasn't done well, include where he has done well. I guess he's the infallible candidate. HIRE TRESTMAN!

confused Gopher, it is nice to meet someone sane on this board. Yesterday a guy named wizrdofwestwood posted some stuff that made sense about the U of Wisconsin and their turn around that made sense.

And, to be fair, he got the job because he was married to the boss's daughter so can't really hold him to a high standard. Not sure of the timing of the divorce with the loss of his job.

No thanks on BB. Other than hiring Ferentz, his Iowa record is nothing to brag about. He oversaw the Steve Alford hiring. When hoops star Pierre Pierce assualted a girl twice over time, Bob gave him a slap on the wrist and a second chance, then a red-shirt year as "punishment" the second time. 15% of the Hawks 2002 Orange Bowl team was arrested at some point in their Hawkeye career prior to the Orange Bowl, most received punishment that would Barry Alvarez blush. "Make his sit out the 3rd series of the 3rd quarter of a game we're up 21, that'll teach 'em". No thanks on this guy.

Maybe Mrs. Bowlsby hired Harbaugh and he was given credit.

Bring Mark Dienhart back... He got shafted in the Clem Haskins scandal.....

I am ready for some new leadership from the Pres and AD. Sure we have done some noteworthy things lately like get the Gophers back on campus with TCF and consolidate mens and womens programs. Bruininks and Maturi mostly say the right things but have not been able to get it done. Its time that the UM make football one of its cornerstones. If it takes cutting back some non-revenue sports then lets get at it. To make football relevant again will take a who new vision, a different way of doing business, a lot of attitude adjustment from the top, require tough decisions and some intelligent planning.

President Elect Kaler has a great resume. But he needs an AD capable of making major changes and providing the leadership. Lets see if Kaler has the resolve to go there.

Right on! Here's to hoping Kaler can make the right decisions, not just the easy ones. Regardless of who will be the next AD, he (or she) and Kaler will have a tough road ahead.

Is this the same OSU that has roughly 35 varsity sports nearly 10 more than any other team in the BigTen? How do the non-revenue sports not "Synch up" with Minnesota priorities?

So the savegopherfootball guys have all started new accounts here to run P.R. and are acting like they don't know each other. Grow up.

I know that Sanny and KQ guys don't know jack about a lot of things, but their suggestion of Jeff Diamond doesn't seem too far-fetched at first look.
