I guess Tubby figured out that the team actually functions just fine with Hoffarber on the point and he's capable of going 35 to 38 minutes. Guesssing Ahanmisi will have to fight out Hollins and Armelin for minutes at the 2 guard the rest of the way.

Looks like Hollins took a big step up in Tubby's eyes tonight. Hitting his FT's helps. I can see Hollins establishing himself as the 6th man the rest of the way. When he comes in, it allows Rodney to go back to SF and one of the bigs to rest. I really liked the team on the floor the last 5 minutes with Hollins in there.

Totally agree with your stock analysis. I would add: Blake, up. But don't you think that Mav will still find minutes at PG? Couple thoughts-

One, Mav will feel more "comfortable" against a more traditional defense. NW's 1-3-1 isn't probably where you want to cut your teeth.

Two, I think it would be good for the offense to get Blake away from handling the ball in order to run some off-the-ball stuff for him, which was starting to work well.

Comments?

I think you're reading too much in to one game at home against Northwestern. The Gophers have played two teams that play guards that do not have a lot of quickness in Michigan and Northwestern. When the Gophers play teams with more perimeter quickness they will need to get more ball handlers on the floor. Also, when/if the pace of the game is more strenuous it will be difficult for Blake to be the primary ball handler for 35 plus minutes.

I don't worry about Maverick against zones as much as I worry about a team pressing him or picking him up 3/4 court he does not respond well to significant pressure.

1) I think Ahanmisi will play point when he comes into the game and agree with the previous poster that the 1-3-1 is hard to "cut your teeth against". I think you'll see 5-10 minutes a night depending on foul trouble.

2) I would bet on Chip and Austin splitting time the rest of the way based on who we're playing and how well the 2 are playing at the time. They bring entirely different styles and strengths to the table.

I've been more impressed with Hollins in the half court offense. Defensively, they're both pretty solid in my eyes, but Tubby seems to think Armelin has been a liability defensively, whereas Hollins continues to draw more praise. I think last night's clincher was when Hollins got a steal, drove in and was fouled with about 4 minutes to play. The Gophers were up 8 and that kinda salted it away and helped the team relax. Plus he knocked down 6-6 FT's...that was HUGE!

+1 We cannot read anything into this game. Tubby will likely play around with lineups depending ont he matchup. Against more athletic teams, I would guess Mav might get more PT. Blake will be play a lot of minutes every game.. sometimes at point, sometimes not. I'm gladd of one thing, thank god we have Tubby to navigate the waters now...

Great points Rouser. Tubby is in a tight spot, but he knows what he is doing. I agree that we will see different lineups against different teams, but the bottom line is that we need to play to our strength in the paint. Three games in a row that way and mission accomplished. Perhaps the silver lining in the roster depletion is that players will be more likely to do what they do and not mess with trying to something they can't. They will do what they are told, and with Tubby in charge that is a very good thing.

I just think that Hollins has gradually asserted himself as a more in control player and we'll need that in our upcoming road games, especially at Mackey. Maverick and Armelin both have shown flashes of good things, but both can get out of control in a hurry if they're not reigned in.

Chip is a spark offensively but defensively I think Hollins has the edge. Chip gambled on a steal last night and it turned into a quick 2 for Northwestern to spark their run late in the 1st.

At some point Tubby won't be aable to afford not to play guys like Mav and Chip. These boys are gonna get tired playing that many minutes and I still think against a better pressure defense Hoff will have issues at point.

Well the team functioned fine with Blake at the point against NW. Let's see how he holds up to the full court press against Purdue, Mich St & Ohio St.

Every team is going to press us all game long the rest of the way. The trick obviously is breaking the press. Assuming Blake can get open to receive the in-bounds passes who does he pass out of the traps to? Rodney? Colt? Ralph? Trevor? No. We must have one other guy who can dribble out of trouble on the floor to get the ball up court. Playing against a press is a challenge for just about any Freshman due to the pressure involved. I don't think Chip has the handle to work out of trouble against the press & I think Maverick makes Freshman decisions. That leaves Hollins who seems to be cool as a cucumber & always make good decisions (Coach's kids are like that).

Your Chip take is right on at the moment imo. I've noticed that Chip dribbles the ball in front of his body-far out in front. This isn't the best idea for a guard trying to protect the ball. Mav keeps the ball closer which is what any good point guard will do. Hollins is closer to Chip in dribbling style from what I've noticed, but he seems to be in control at least while making his moves. Give Chip some room and he can get to the hoop. Cover Chip closely and you have a good chance at picking him clean.
