What was the biggest sports story of the 2012-2013 Gopher sports year?

Naturally I picked the Tubby/Pitino choice, but the Womens' Hockey Team achievement was my second.

You guys are some serious bball homers. The women's team clearly trumps anything the other Gopher teams did. 49 straight wins in hockey? That's extraordinary at any level.

I voted for Tubby and Rick but from a sheer excitement stand point beating number 1 IU and storming the court was as big and good as it gets. You might want consider changing the NCAA win by adding that win to the choice. Women play hockey? Pretty cool too!

Well since basketball is my favorite gopher sport I gotta go with the gophs taking down #1 at the barn and getting to rush the court a memory I'll never forget!

DITTO.

Gophers going to a Bowl game - it's the start of the climb towards success and a future Rose Bowl.

For me it was the gophers being ranked as high as 8th In the nation in basketball and starting out 15-1 and beating Illinois and Michigan state in the first 2 games, starting out 4-0 in football wasmpretty good too, I would say beating Indiana or UCLA but the gophers were so bad at the time that it wasn't that exciting, I would have rather beaten Indiana when we were 8th and that could have propelled us to a top 3 spot, possibly even number one because as I remember a plethora of top 10 teams lost that week and we would have just beaten 2 top ten teams in Illinois and Indiana

I voted Women's Hockey too, because of the absolute domination that the team showed. However, this poll can definitely be interpreted as "biggest news in Gopher Sports", which puts WHockey at a huge disadvantage because it is, well, a Women's sport which gets very little coverage to begin with.

If I may interject here, the topic was "What was the biggest sports story?"

The Tubby/Pitino was a bigger story due to the popularity of basketball at the U. The achievements of the Womens' Hockey Team were great, but not the biggest story.

The biggest news to the know nothing basketball fans was the implosion of the basketball team predicted by none other than me in January, in so many couched words and phrases.

And....that's your opinion. I think it's the Bowl game.

For me its not listed.. I would vote for the win against IU on ESPN. Beating number 1, rushing the court, at the time was a huge story, bigger than making the tourney IMO. That night was electric and more fun at a Gopher event than I have had in a very long time.... But in terms of being a "story".. not sure if it counts..

If we interpret "biggest" to be most newsworthy nationwide, I think it has to be the bball firing/hiring. Most exciting for me as a fan was the women's hockey title. Being at the championship game was some of the most fun I have ever had at a sporting event. I couldn't believe a sport with as little popularity/following as girls hockey was able to get Ridder so loud, and that kind of dominance being shown by the local team was an absolute blast.

Yeah, "biggest" is kinda slanted to the bigger sports. I'd say the "biggest" story is the Tubby Smith firing, that sends nationwide waves. The most impressive/best story though is the women's hockey team and it's not even really that close IMO. 49 straight W's and counting, just amazing work.

Maybe not bigger news....but had to go with the National Championship

Absolutely.

And the biggest Gopher sports news EVER? National champs in football 1934-35-36-40-41 maybe. 7-6 win over Michigan in '41? 13-7 win at Pitt in '34 (MN finished #1 and Pitt #2 in the AP poll)? MN 27 Iowa 10 in 1960?
