Hole Poll: What grade would you give the Gophers D today?

A They played the entire second half and gave up ZERO points....

A. Give up 10 points a game and you are winning on Jan 1.

I said B, but it would be a B+. They got thrashed by Penn State's run game, but stepped up big time when we needed them at the end of the game. Our run D is going to have to improve BIG TIME if we are going to stop Wisconsin from embarrassing us in a couple of weeks.

Voted a b, but would give them a Bplus. I feel like sometimes the defense takes plays off, when their rusher would have 8 or 9 yard gains. Front four needs to stuff those gaps more. But overall a great performance holding a big ten team to 10 points and basically shutting down Robinson.

I said B just because I think there is room for improvement. The running D was not very good, but the pass D was.

Special Teams Deserve a Grade of A+

Hold a B1G Ten team to 10 pts? A.

Agreed, how can you not give our Defense an A when they hold PSU to 10 points? More importantly, our special teams gets a grade of A+ from me.

I'd say B. Can't get an A when you give up 350 yards.

A+. An offensive fumble and a special team f*** up put the defense in some tough spots, with short fields. They responded at the right time. Ten points against the Lions? Great game and awesome effort.

B. Great pass coverage all game, only allowed 10 points, were in position to pick up fumbles when necessary. But gave up a lot of run yards, some missed tackles, and out-muscled by their running back. Can't let Wisconsin get down to the 1 yard line like that. But, we won and only allowed 10. Great day.

I gave a B. If B+ was an option, I would have voted that. We gave up too much and looked beatable too often on D to give an A. More objectively, we gave up too many yards. That said, 10 points total, 0 in the second half is impressive. Forced TOs when necessary. Solid performance, and room to improve.

They did give up some yards, but some of that is the fault of the offense who didn't hold up their end in the 2nd half prior to the final drive of the game. The defense made the plays over and over, even when tired. I couldn't believe they came back on the field after the roughing the punter penalty and still stopped Penn St. from scoring. Eric Murray was outstanding today...

I gave them an A. 10 points. Second half shut out. Scoreboard.

How good is Derrick wells? There was a comment from the announcers where they called him a second string but i think it just feels that way because they don't throw his way. Am I off on that?

Wells is 1st string, but has been hurt. Hopefully, the week off will get him to 100%

Did anyone else think that Robinson looked like he put more effort into flopping and begging for PI calls than into trying to catch balls?

I said B but would give them a B+ if it was an option. Holding a B1G opponent to 10 points and shutting them out in the 2nd half was awesome, but our run D was horrible giving up close to 6 yards per carry. Too many big holes and easy 7-8-9 yard gains on early downs. Anybody notice they ran the same run play to the same side probably 15 times (including 3 or 4 times in a row) and we never stopped it. Where are our line backers? This worries me for the wisconsin game. Also our D didn't force either fumble they just dropped the ball on their own.

Not trying to be negative... couldn't be happier with the team performance today. Our special teams should get an A+++++++ and I can't remember the last time we went an entire half without having to punt or the last time the gophers converted so many 3rd and longs (and 4th and longs!!!). Nelson was on fire today. I hope we bring it for the wisconsin game. We look like a completely different team than the team that played iowa and its blowing my mind.

Yes. For all the talk I had heard about him and all the attention he got leading up to the game I was very underwhelmed with him. Credit to our defense to keeping him under wraps.

Also screw the refs for not giving us a PI call and giving them 2. I hope some one keyed that refs car.

Disagree...sometimes a team just gets beat. We gave up 10 points to a B10 team. Damn solid.

Yeah, I could be completely wrong since I've never studied the game in depth, but it seems to me that a perfectly executed offensive play beats a perfectly executed defensive play damn near 10/10 times.

I agree. This is the only reason I didn't give them an A. We couldn't stop Zwinak, especially between the 20’s. we'llp have to come up big on turnovers, because White is gonna put up 150 yards. Also, the best D against UW will be keeping their offense off the field. Long drives will be key. 3 & outs will kill us.

What I want to know is who gave the D a C? What were you expecting...a shutout and 3 defensive TDs?
