Hold out!! Tennessee QB Nico Iamaleava did not attend Tennessee spring practice today. He’s been in conversations with Tennessee about a new contract.

"contract". Oh boy here we go. Definitely some truth to money being the root of all evil. Sure makes it easier having it and others do terrible things to get it.

Smart. Get it over with now. If you don't ask, you don't get. As long as he doesn't negotiate for see through uniforms, I'm good.

What's your definition of many?
Some. I don't have an exact count, but I think we all read many posts supporting a NIL world.

And most of the time it was under the guise of players getting money for autographs and commercials. But let's not pretend there wasn't people out there that predicted it would become exactly what we are seeing now. They were usually shouted down as anti-player or old fashioned, but make no mistake they were out there. And they were right.

What schools are willing to take on this headache?
According to a new SEC bylaw, players cannot transfer to another school within the Conference during the Spring Portal. With him being from out West, schools like Oregon, Washington and UCLA are being mentioned.

He was to make $2.4M this year and wanted it raised to $4M for the season. Apparently his Dad is a real piece of work and TEN said we've had enough of you and your kid. Kudos to TEN is what I say.

Perhaps! I think posters here understand that NIL is part of the reality of college sports today and needs to be negotiated with if you want a stable program. The mbb program is an example of what happens when NIL isn't strong. Doesn't mean I like NIL however. It's just a reality of college athletics.

Props to Tennessee for not caving. Sure they didn't want to set a precedent that you can just hold out and demand more money because they knew others would do the same.

That said, this will probably become much more common. Already seeing lots of guys (on the basketball side especially) going into the portal with the option to come back which is essentially just a way of saying "pay me more or I am gone".

Not hard to see any of this coming....such a messed up college sports landscape we are seeing.

I am not arguing that it isn't a reality. Just saying that years ago when this was being debated the proponents said this was to compensate the players for their name image and likeness and that it wouldn't change the landscape much. This situation shows that the reality is much different than that promise.

Unfortunately, many people(probably the same people that said this was going to be about getting money for autographs etc.) don't have the ability for empathy or ability to see the whole picture. Right now this is a fun aside note, but if Perich decided to do this, and he very well could, this board would be apoplectic.

I think they did better than that.
I am glad TN held firm, but they still are now without a QB, with few options. The fans who have probably already paid their season ticket fees are hurt. I'd want my money back to tell you the truth if I were them. But they won't get it.

So I guess the moral of the story is don't commit your money with no guarantee of what you'll get. My guess is that there is a lot of people spending big money that will agree.

He probably should have waited till end of July or early August. More leverage. We can say that nobody would touch him, but in reality if Alabama or Texas A&M doesn't like it's options with a few weeks before the beginning of the season they would give him 4 or 5 million.

He can’t go there and play this year so no they won’t

Well yeah, anything would have been better than tying it up in court. That wouldn't have accomplished anything.

They had three real options - pay him, move on, or let him sit out and hope he returns for the fall.

I'm glad they chose not to pay him more and I don't think he'll make more money next year.

$4 million is going to be really tough.

I think most people believe he is good but Tennessee's system does inflate the numbers a bit.

Colorado? They just got the QB from Liberty.
Oregon? Does he really risk it all to jump into that QB battle?
UCLA? Do they come up with $4 million? Does he put his draft stock on the line to play for that program?
USC? There isn't a real clear path

I guess if I had to bet, I'd say he goes to Colorado or a complete wildcard. I don't think he gets $4 million anywhere.

This is what a lot of people(including many on here) wanted. Let's see if the college football fanbase wants to keep watching this...
As far as I can see the free market did it's work here. Kid thinks he is worth X amount, uses the leverage he thought he had, Tennessee tells him to pound sand, kid walks away without the money he wants and with a damaged reputation. I have no issue with it.

In what world does he still cost 4 Million?

He destroyed his leverage. Now, he requires an opportunity, just to make $1.

People are risk averse, that loss of $2.5 million is gonna feel very real. And if he ever was a prospect, he isn’t anymore.

Pigs get fed, hogs get slaughtered. Kid was slaughtered. He’s now needy. I don’t think a team needs to offer him anywhere near 2.5 million anymore.

Bringing him in is a bad team move.

Now there will be desperate coaches; but desperate coaches can only pay as much as boosters are willing to support that desperation. Which of course are not compatible positions.
