Hey Joel, Where is Tubby's extension?

It's a significant drawback to national recruiting. Recruits want to play in brand new arenas.

Yes, FOT, we understand. You have a ton of esoteric basketball knowledge but you have no idea of the place Williams Arena has in the hearts of Gopher basketball fans. It will eventually be replaced but Tubby will have been long gone by then.

Can you read? I said I KNOW that Gopher FANS love it but bigtime basketball RECRUITS may NOT.

I suggest to you that you seek out a surgeon to talk about an extension for yourself you little prick.

Anybody else appreciate the irony of this statement?

I think this thread deserves a bump tonight. I wonder if Dithering Joel has had a chance to make any progress on this? I know it's only been 8 months and is being chiseled in stone, but maybe they could get it done one of these weeks?

Yes - he was quoted (about the extension) in the local paper - St Paul Pioneer Press, I think - this weekend.

Maturi? Fine, but did he say anything other then 'it's a process' and 'the lawyers have it'? That's been his answer since May.

Smith does not deserve an extension in my opinion. I'd like to see us get a top 3 finish etc before we even consider it. The NC schedule has been soft for the past few years and has been the springboard for the back-back tourney appearances. I like this year's schedule a lot better and if he has a good year then take a look.

That's not really how extensions work. That how contract escalators work. (i.e, You win the Big Ten we'll throw you another quarter mill.) One of the head guys in my neck of the woods has won twenty plus games (soft schedule) and gone to just the NIT three straight years. He got a big extension.(Andy Kennedy) He got that extension because of forward momentum. For a program to sustain its momentum recruits need to know that the main guy will be there. I don't think he's going anywhere ( but he'll never give up leverage by actually saying that.) If Maturi is of any functionally intelligent he'll become Tubby's yes man.

With Maturi's track record of extensions. If Tubby signed today, he would be fired by this time next year.

Understandable but the team's venue is a factor in recruiting. Most recruits - ESPECIALLY big time ones - want to play in a modern arena.

Kansas: Phog Allen Fieldhouse - Opened in 1955
Duke: Cameron Indoor Stadium - Opened in 1940

These teams don't seem to have any problem recruiting without a modern arena. And these schools tend to get the big time ones...

Duke and Kansas are elite teams (all-time).

Extension Needed

Gophers have 0 B10 titles, 0 B10T championships, and 0 postseason W (NCAA or NIT) in 3 years.

Gophers NEED to be in Top 4 of B10 next 2 years, either W B10T or B10 title, and W postseason games next 2 years.

Then an extension is appropriate. 25 W is the target (per season) not 21 W average,

I too would love to have 25 wins per year with higher finishes in the B10 (this might be the year!) The problem with this logic is who are you going to get to achieve this? It seems extremely unlikely that we will find a better coach and school representative than Tubby.

Is there any chance the holdup is on Tubby's end? Spitballing here, but maybe he's demanding language in there about a practice facility and $$$ or buyout if he stays but they don't get it?

Neither side expresses concern publicly, nor have we heard rumors of behind-the-scenes griping by either side. Have we?

I guess I don't know what the holdup is, but it seems like the original contract was held up too, wasn't it?
