"He's (Andre Hollins) going to be the face of the program before he gets out."

STrib article on Andre Hollins' growth this year:

"He started getting better, and he's going to get better," said Jesus Patino, Hollins' high school coach at White Station in Tennessee. "He's going to be unreal. He's going to be the face of the program before he gets out -- because he has personality, he's that kind of kid. He's got it all."

The Gophers are desperate for someone to take the reins. Smith knows he needs it. Hollins is willing and ready to take it. And Patino believes the freshman is primed to show the Gophers what the face of a leader looks like.

"He's doing that," Patino said. "I'm surprised it's this early, but I think he's going to be Minnesota's kid."

Great article. Shows that Andre is happy and committed. I'm really excited for his future. A kid like this helps recruiting immensely as I have to believe he is going to be a kid that shows the prospective recruits around campus. This article gives me more hope than anything I have seen in a while.

I just hope he can split the NW D today without making bad passes...but I do like his potential.

He reminds me of Marquis Gray. A first class kid and someone you are proud of as a student athlete at your university.

Love his potential, scared of the turnovers and bonehead mistakes. Thats can be chalked up to youth and playing slightly out of position right now. Hopefully he can grow into the slasher he seems to want to be, as the outside shot is already pretty solid.

Needs to go to PG university this summer and get ball handling and security hammered into him.

I've been impressed with his intensity. He clearly has the drive to wanna get better, and once he grows a little bit, he will clearly be a guy who will push his teammates, something we've been kinda lacking this year.

If Tubby is going to turn this thing around, Andre Hollins has to become the guy his old coach believes he will be IMO. Not to say there aren't others who could potentially become leaders on this team, but this kid just shows signs, and plus he seems like a great kid off the court too. Like mingg said, definitely reminds me of Gray.

And his FT shooting is also a great plus. Don't normally see freshmen lead the BT in FT percentage. That's impressive to me.

I think Tubby realizes that his wagon is firmly hitched to Andre Hollins' success, starting now.

BTW- regarding turnovers - he'll get it fixed. this is what frosh pgs do. Kentucky's frosh Teague, who is a stud, averages 2.8 to's per game in 32 minutes - so about prorata to Hollins. He's not as good of a shooter as Hollins but he gets more assists- possibly because his team mates finish plays better. So Hollins is in good company on turnovers and performance per minute.

Last time we played NW - something like 18 TO's - Andre only had one in 13 minutes - let's hope that continues.

I'm really not that worried about the turnovers. He needs to improve his ability to create opportunities for others. If he were averaging 3.5 assists per game right now, I don't think we'd view his turnovers as such a big problem. He still needs to get better at taking care of the ball though, no doubt.

For the first time I think I've ever done this for one of your posts,

I love that he's always so smiley. He seems to have fun in addition to having a great knowledge and skill for the game.

Great game from Hollins tonight. He has really progressed throughout this year and is a better player than he was just a few weeks ago.

I am very excited to watch his growth as a player.

Go Gophers!!

Best thing of all, He Dre is a freshman, who is not afraid to rise to the occasion and be a mainstay. He put up 17 shots tonight, and showed a shooter's confidence. Way to go Dre! And when you have a guy like that, it is synergistic, makes Welch and Austin Hollins better because they get more open looks.

Gopher Nation - can't you see the middle opening next year for Mo, EE and Rodney when we actually have young shooters grown out of their tentative skins?

In contrast to the Illini, which gave up on its season, MN did not, remained competitve, and is improving.

The reason why OSU has been so good is they've had the inside (Sully) and outside (Buford/Craft/Thomas). MN can now see we are growing in that direction (not saying we're there based upon one win)

Very exciting and encouraging performance. Hopefully Andre can pull a Kemba Walker and put the team on his back while leading us to the Big Ten championship. If nothing else his performance makes the outlook of next season that much more exciting. Definitely still focusing on this year though. Time to beat Michigan.

I was thinking something along the lines of a Devoe Joseph run from a couple years ago, but a Kemba run would work!

Tell me, who recruited this kid anyway?

I'm excited to see Andre become a program changing player in the 3 years, and the next 3 days too hopefully

I'm super pumped about Dre's future as a gopher. Leadership has been an issue with this team as we all know. He needs to continue his maturation at the point as he does not have the point guard mentality yet. Point guards don't score 25 points a game, yet it seems that's what he's capable of. Will he continue to play the point guard role? I like him having the ball in his hands.... Can we have a point guard that's looking to shoot as much as he's looking to pass?

When I see this promising player with the great smile... I can't help but think about Mateen Cleeves... if only Dre could guide this ship into those waters. When Dre gets a head of steam going on a drive, he actually reminds me more of Illinois Demetri McCamey.

A win against a NW team normally doesn't get me excited as I tend to get fooled by their lack of athleticism and underestimate their craftiness.... but today is different.... this is a good win for us. NW had everything to play for and we knew they were going to fire a bullet.... I'm proud of our team tonight.

Ya, Derrick Rose and Russel Westbrook aren't scorers at all. I think that's the kind of PG Dre can be.

Awesome game be Dre. I still think he's more a shooting guard in the bobby jackson role, than a pg. He rarely gets others easy baskets. I would much rather see Welch be our eric harris next year, and let Dre play off the ball-- except at crunch time, when we spread the floor as he can get to the basket at will and he has a very nice Devoe step back jumper also.

Either way very nice game last night.

His whole demeanor and way he plays reminds me of Westbrook.

I can't think of a better way to say it than, he just has a constant bounce about him like Westbrook.
