Help me understand why Kill would be a bad hire

People are ticked off because they think Leach was a legitimate option, because they have delusions of grandeur about the sort of coach that would actually desire to come here, and because they have delusions about the kind of money available to hire such a coach.

I think Kill would be a good hire. As far as this myth about getting a coach that will "fill the seats" or whatever. You know what fills the seats? Winning. Not a coach. They could hire Mike Leach and if Mike leach went 1-3 in non-conference you can bet that he wouldn't be packing TCF.

If Kill comes here, and goes 3-1 in nonconference... or better yet, beats USC, people will come. Minnesotans love a winner, and will not tolerate a loser, no matter what his name is.

Exactly....if Kill is the hire and in two, three years the team is 8-4/9-3 consistently in the Big 10 nobody will give a sh*t how much jumping up and down goes on.

People forget that Tressel's last stop before going to OSU was at Youngstown State. He was incredibly successful there but it wasn't a big name hire in the least.

Would I rather a sizzle hire? Absolutely but winners don't have to necessarily come from the big stage.

Okay. How do you win in a BCS conference without high quality recruits? This guy has never recruited for a BCS school before.

Iowa wins without recruiting very well (per the services). The real judge of recruiting should be how well the teams play under his recruits, but yeah, if you wanted to go strictly off the "rankings", well those things will improve going to the U.

Keep in mind, Jerry Kill has played the Big 10 5 times while he was at Northern Illinois, on 5 away games, he is 2-3. I think the Gophers and a lot of other Big 10 coaches would take winning 40% of your road Big 10 games.

Leach has publicly SAID he wants to come here. He is and was a legitimate option, and people are justifiably pissed if the administration didn't consider him because he kinda sounds like a jerk. Like you say, people want a winner, regardless of his name. Leach is a proven winner.

People here seem to think we are a Florida who can lure an Urban Meyer like caliber coach to our university. They need to re-evaluate. Maturi saying and doing is two COMPLETELY different things.

Both Kill and Chryst would be solid hires, but with all of the hype, rumor and Maturi and Bruininks' own comments about the type of hire they were trying to make, both of these guys seem to miss the mark.

As mentioned earlier in the thread the football program is at a critical juncture, and based off of Maturi's previous hire for the job a lot of people don't have confidence that he'll make a better one this time. He was operating under different circumstances when he hired Brewster but most folks don't care. Their response is more on the emotional level than a logical one.

Expectations have been raised by the AD and president, so a lot of people will be disappointed if the hire turns out to be someone at Kill or Chryst's stature regardless of their capabilities. The fear isn't necessarily about the long-term health of the program as much as it is about not lighting a fire under the fanbase right now.

We all wanted Leach, but I hope folks will not take it out on Kill.

Do your homework.

All Jerry Kill has done is elevate three straight programs. Who else has done that?

Save your time.

No one.

Since you have done your homework, which three programs did he elevate and what constitutes "elevating a program"?

EXACTLY!!!!!! DO NOT BLAME THIS ON JERRY KILL!!!!!!!!!

(assuming the Kill rumor is true)

OR ON WHOEVER MATURI CHOOSES!!!!!

(and I hate when people use all caps to get their point across!)

INSTEAD, BLAME MATURI!!!!

(and that punter, Kelly, four being such a butthole)

He may be the best we can get. The fact is, when you hire a guy from a lowers level you never know how it's going to turn out. You could get Don Morton (preceded Alvarez at UW) or you could get Tressel (Youngstown state). I think he could probably do a good job but I agree with Reusse that the stadium will be half empty next year. If I recall correctly we host UW, IA, and NU next year - so maybe people will keep their seats for another year and scalp their seats...

He turned two jobs around drastically. He did a slight turn around at Saginaw Valley. He started 6-4 and finished with 9-2. He wasn't at Emporia State long.

At Southern Illinois he started 1-10 (2001) and 4-8 (2002). 2003-2005 He was confernece champions, and 2003-2007 he was a playoff team in 1aa. His last 5 years at SIU he only had 14 losses and had 50 wins.

At Northern Illinois, he started middle of the road 6-7 and 7-6. True to his previous job, he went 10-3 this year.

Don't forget NDSU.

I don't know that he will be a bad hire. In fact I don't think he'll be 'bad' as in as bad as Brew. But I think the ceiling on him is very low. Does he strike you as a guy who's going to be hauling in great recruiting classes and leading us to Rose Bowls? He doesn't for me.

Kill is not at the bottom of my list, but he's in the bottom group. At worst, I'd rather have had Fulmer or Shannon both of whom likely would have taken the job.

We're at a critical juncture in Gopher Football history. We needed Joel to hit a HR or at least a triple. Kill is a solid single. Not good enough under the circumstances.

See above.

I saw all those numbers. I also saw that the previous coach at NIU had beaten Alabama and was ranked as high as #10 nationally but had a bad last year before retiring. Didn't exactly sound like the dregs.

Look at Jerry Kill's record at NIU- 23-16 (18-6)
Look at Brady Hoke's record at Ball State- 34-38 (27-20)

If you like Brady Hoke then you better like Jerry Kill. Kill has done very well at NIU and SIU.

I have no idea why in the hell everyone is freaking out over Jerry Kill. He's more than qualified for the job.

Everyone keeps bringing up Tressler when they talk about Kill...well it the U ups its spending to $31 mil...then i am sure Kill will do well here...but with half the budget, can he compete...we know Leach can because he has already. We know Edsall can, because he is doing it in a BCS conference now.

Looking at equal completion in the Mac, i would take Kill over Hoke.

If it's Kill, so be it. But in no way do I believe we needed a search firm if he's the hire. He probably could've been had for a MGD and hoagie over at Davanni's. Further, I would seriously hope we're not paying him the type of money Maturi suggested we could pay. He may win and he may be just what the U of M needs; he just doesn't appear to come with any appeal from a PR standpoint and he's certainly not the Tubby-type hire. But if he's the man then I hope he does well and surprises those of us who are skeptical!
