Has Tubby lost the team or has the team given up on Tubby?

Tubby's offense isn't built for the Big Ten that's why they struggle in conference. Sometimes I just wish they would suck the whole year so I could at least see some consistency.

So then.....why doesnt tubby change his offense?

Agreed. I don't think our out of conference success is due to scouting, it's because the Big 10 plays defense.

Tubby does coach a pretty solid D and is a good defensive coach. This helps us in the non conference with teams who aren't used to seeing defense like it.

Tubby is an average offensive coach, this doesn't hurt us too much in the non conference because teams don't really play defense that well.

The confidence issue I put in the coach though too, I don't think the offense is as terrible as many make it seem (it's not great, don't get me wrong), but the guys just don't seem quick or confident running it. They pass up open shots, open drives, open passes, etc. Tubby's job is to have them playing confident and fluid. That hasn't happened this year.

In the Big 10. Everyone plays defense so his defensive strength isn't as apparent. In the big 10, that defense exposes his offensive mediocrity.

If the Gophers can make the tournament, I think they are fully capable of winning some games due to the above and that's what matters. If tubby went 9-9 every year in conference, but made the sweet 16 or elite 8 every year. I'd be pretty ecstatic with that. I don't care if we get blown out in those 9 conference losses or he calls guys out after every game. Those "lessons" all pan out to an elite 8 and you are fine by me Tubby.

He needs to prove he can make the tourney with full health and make that sweet 16. That's my standard for this year.

This is how I see the team/coach as well. As for this year... if we can find our way into the tourney, hopefully that brings enough new excitement to right the ship in a setting I think we can be dangerous in.

Do you really think that is a possibility of any team or coach?

Not every year, my only point being I don't care so much about the big ten season, big ten tournament, etc. I care about the NCAA tournament. Would I like to see regular season success? Sure. However, my measuring stick for a coach will be NCAA tournament and this is Tubby's year to show he can win there at Minnesota.

Just keeping you on your toes.

I agree with Scher about postseason success being more important than regular season success, but better regular seasons obviously results in better tournament seedings, which make for a team better set up for a run.

If you are a B1G coach, your weakness can't be "playing against B1G schools"

Correct, not to mention his own goal was to win championships.

Another big factor is that Tubby doesn't tend to tailor his offense to his personnel. I imagine that can be frustrating for some of his players. One thing I know from his time at UK is that there was a specific type of player who thrived under Tubby. I know you can say that about a lot of coaches but with Tubby it was even more pronounced.

One important factor is he banks on his ball line defense creating fast break points, that's a big part of his overall scheme. His teams struggle when they aren't able to exploit the ball line defense and generate fast break opportunities. We saw that at UK, he had some talented teams that couldn't score as much as they should have because they couldn't turn the opponent over and run.

I like Tubby and would really like to see him have success for you guys but his stubbornness is not going to change. A big reason he left UK is because he wasn't willing to make staff changes that the AD wanted. Tubby's record has proven that he can coach, but it's also proven that he's often just good enough (or bad enough) to keep a fanbase divided.

I think we need a good Young coach

After tonight's game in Columbus, we now know that the team has given up. This is just awful and the coaching staff is doing nothing to prevent further damage. We will go in and out of the NIT in one weekend with play like this.
