Has There Been Any Update on David Cobb's Injury Status?

Personal favorite. Ole don't care if we win or not, just that Streveler plays.

Sarcasm?
He had some nice runs against Iowa, he brings some juice to the O which we'll need if Cobb isn't playing.

As important as Cobb's been for the Gophers, I'd rather have a 100% with a chip on their shoulders Kirkwoodland & Nugget than a 75% gutty Cobb....

Go through the pregame & make the decision though. I do believe Kill when he says that he will not chance Cobb.

Foster is the reason Cobb will be drafted. If a team wants him, they can't let him go to UFA status.

I agree that he will get drafted but I also agree with those saying he won't be a high pick in the draft. And like it has also been pointed out that is not a knock on Cobb it is just the way it is with running backs these days. Gordon and Cobb will be treated in the draft similar to the way Maroney and Barber were (different years but similar skill sets). Maroney was a first round pick and Barber was a 4th. Gordon will be a high round pick and Cobb will go in the middle rounds. The main difference is that Maroney/Gordon have that elite speed that teams drool over while Cobb/Barber are better overall RB's but lack that game changing speed.

Was there any word from yesterdays practice about Cobb's participation or lack of participation? If he doesn't practice all week it will he highly unlikely that he sees the field Saturday. If he is limited there is a shot but reading between the lines on the comments that have been made to this point it seems unlikely that he plays at this point.

Last time Cobb tried to gut it out was at TCU. You could tell he wasn't completely healthy and it hurt the team a little bit. I am a huge David Cobb fan and he is easily the teams MVP this year, but if he isn't close to 100%, I say we roll with the big backs and run it down their throats.

Either way, Saturday is going to be a lot of fun.

That's what a lot of people think, even on Gopherhole. It's not a knock on Cobb's production, but running backs like Cobb don't get drafted high. His speed is really going to hurt him. It doesn't mean he won't be a success though.Arian Foster who wasn't even drafted and he had similar speed problems. Somebody will take a flyer on him, but in today's NFL I bet Melvin Gordon doesn't even go until the 20s.

He is already listed as a projected 3-4th rounder and the #12 back on CBS and on Rotoworld is ranked the #7 back. Rotoworld doesn't list projected rounds but on CBS the #7 back is a projected 2nd rounder.

I would be floored if 7 running backs were taken in the first 2 rounds.

Agreed, so i Did some research.

Number of RBs taken in the first 2 round last 5 years:
2014: 3 (All in the 2nd round)
2013: 4 (All in the 2nd round)
2012: 5 (3 1st round, 2 2nd round)
2011: 5 (1 1st round, 4 2nd round)
2010: 7 (3 1st round, 4 2nd round)

Its pretty obvious that the RB position is being devalued, especially when you look at these draft picks. I cant comment too much on the 2014 crop, but none of the RB taken in the first 2 rounds are lighting it up and you can argue the best RB taken in the first 2 rounds the last 5 years is Eddie Lacy. The rest have not really lit up any scoreboards or been true game changers on a consistent basis. Between the average RB career length, and the high bust percentage, nobody wants to get a RB when you have a high chance of getting a long time star ay just about any other position. RB are just like Goalies in the NHL, there are a dime a dozen, you can take just about any Goalie and they will be serviceable for at least a short amount of time, once they are done, throw in a new one and the production probably wont change much. But every once and while a great RB or Goalie comes along which is a consistent game changer, but is it worth throwing high picks every year to TRY to see if the next one taken is the next Adrian Peterson? No.

So, I cant see any more than 3-4 going in the first 2 rounds this year. NFL keeps going away from the run and the position is very hard to measure.

Running backs just aren't worth as much in the NFL anymore. They don't last very long and aren't worth taking high in the draft. Especially this year when there are a lot of really good backs coming out. Its not a knock on cobb to say he won't go until the 4th or 5th round, it has more to do with how the running back is perceived in todays NFL.

Back to the subject at hand... I know Cobb really really really wants to play in this game but if he isn't healthy enough to go he just won't be as effective. I hope I'm wrong and Cobb is ready to go but I just don't see him recovering and playing well after just one week. Even if Cobb was 100% it wouldn't be unrealistic to say Leidner will have to play the game of his life for us to win this one.. or at least play as good as he did in the Iowa game. Thats going to be the key whether Cobb plays or not.
If I recall correctly, Kirkwood was a 1,000-yard back two years ago. Like pretty much everyone in the program, he's benefited from two years of working with our strength coach Eric Klein. Our offensive line is better than it was two years ago.

Mitch needs to play well, no doubt, but that's true for any game. I don't think he needs to have his best game for us to win, just needs to be the "good" Mitch, make some throws, some runs, and take care of the football. It's a nationally-ranked opponent on the road in a tough place to play. Lots of guys need to step up. I think anyone having "game of their lives" for us produces a win. But, the team playing well, defense tackling well, few penalties...pretty much hold to our script and we'll bring home the axe.

He ran for 926 yards in 2012 and had 8 yards against Wisconsin, 11 yards against Nebraska, 19 yards against Michigan State, and 33 yards against Iowa. Fingers crossed that he's a much better back today.
