Happy to see a Coach with the gonads to win

No.

This thread is about having the gonads to go for the win. Claeys planned to run two plays. And I am putting forth the thought that if you can't get a 1/2 yard in two plays you don't deserve to win.

There are plenty of threads discussing whether or not to go for the tie.

Hahah, umm people are hung up on the number of plays because in American football you are allowed 4, starting with 1st down. Had we run 2 more, with proper clock management, we would have likely won or tied the game at end of regulation

I really don't have a problem going for it on the last play, Leidner has been pretty good around the goal line. Now the previous play? That one had me screaming at my TV.

Haha, in American football, if you can't move the ball 18 ****ing inches in 2 plays, you shouldn't win.

Haha.

Correct again. Came down to one play. And one team wanted it more and won. The other team was us.

I had no problem with it. They have scored at least two TDs down there sneaking the TE out the backside like that. I didn't rewind it to see what happened on that side of the play, and at this time, I'm too pissed off to even think about teeing up my DVR.

You go to OT against their backup QB when you are at home.

1st down: run it
Call Time out
2nd down: pass
3rd down: kick FG

OT: tee off on their backup QB

Exactly what I said to my dad after the dt review... *sigh*

With 19 seconds left......we had more than enough time to run that play action pass and still have enough time to try the QB sneak with the timeout sitting there. Yes.....we should have had enough time after the QB sneak attempt to possibly try another......or kick the field goal to send it to OT. Considering the refs stopped the game to check the Woli TD.....the coaches should have had this worked out and ready. Huge clock management gaffe.

Happy with Claeys and the effort tonight. Lots of fun games left to play. Go Gophs.

Tbh claeys did all he could to lose the job with that decision tonight. Brutal. No common sense

I'm not even sure why I'm replying because everything you have written has been almost too stupid to believe. But I'm curious how far exactly this argument goes. If they had a second left after 2nd down should they have walked off the field because they didn't get their 18 inches in 2 plays? If they had 24 inches to go should they have been allowed to run 3 plays? Enlighten us

he was conservative the entire game until the last play. End of the first half they left a play or 2 on the field and let the clock run down for the FG. Settling for all of the other field goals (one which was after 3 running plays)

Great game that was well-coached for 59 1/2 minutes. I love how Claeys opens up our offense and I'm happy to have a coach who can take a game down to the wire against a #15 team. I'm sure he regrets the final seconds just as we all do. It happens. But it bodes well for our future if we can keep up this level of play.

Agree with all of the above - but we should have gone for the FG and overtime. I seem to remember Brewster doing the same thing once.

I would be able to buy your argument if they hadn't been playing for a FG before the pass to woli

I hated how he decided to play for a FG at the end of the 1st half also

Yeah we can say he had the balls to go for it at the end, but he was playing it conservative that whole drive, and he was also very conservative at the end of the 1st half, which ultimately cost the Gophers the game.

His argument is absolutely terrible.

A) Down 3 with 2 seconds left, ball on the 2 foot line, double digit dogs, out of the conference title race, 95% of coaches in America would have gone for it. There's probably a 75% chance of scoring on that play. If Leidner gets in the whole board lauds Claeys as bold and decisive. Can anyone honestly say that they would have been posting on here that the smart play was to kick it if Leidner got in and won the game?

Obviously the previous play was coaching malpractice of epic proportions, but I'm just talking about the decision on the final play.

B) As for how much time they took on the final drive, I'm of two minds there. First, I typically would prefer to see a team losing try to move a little more quickly. I'm not a fan of banking on scoring on that one possession. That being said, almost every coach does that. I've seen that situation a lot, down 1 score with 4 or 5 minutes to play, and almost every time they try to win the game and not give the ball back. Again, this is all hindsight. If Leidner scores at the end would anyone be posting on here that Claeys screwed up by only getting one drive? Or, let's say they hurried and left Michigan 2 minutes, and Michigan went down and scored. How many people would be on here complaining that Claeys screwed up and shouldn't have left them all that time? A lot.

In general I think 95% of coaching decisions are viewed through the lens of hindsight and it drives me crazy. You can't judge the decision by the results.

No problem with going for the win. If he makes it GH trashes Kill on how he wouldn't have. Lose in OT and GH trashes Claeys for not trying to get 1/2 yard. Going for it with 2 seconds left is not an issue. Only getting 2 shots in 19 seconds is. Still, no issues with the call with 2 seconds left. I think it was the right call too. I would bet most folks thinking we should have passed also ripped the Seahawks in the SB for not giving it to Lynch. Easy to say after the fact when you know what didn't work.

I have to agree with this one too.

I guess I'd be fine going for the win, but if you are going to do that, you have to be much more aggressive and urgent in the way you go about it.

Somebody called the outcome "Brewsteresque." I think that's giving Brewster way too much credit. I don't remember many games where he came in as a 14-point underdog and had his team playing that well. I think the end was much more "Masonesque." And that was the reason that, despite going to seven bowls in his last 8 years, he was dismissed. Good coach that would NEVER be a great coach.

19 seconds left you had all kinds of time to prepare as they review the previous td call

1. Be lined up and hike the ball immediately for a pass

2. Run the ball if no score do time out

3. Pass again

4. With two seconds left spread the field with out receivers then quick snap for the sneak.

Lost two attempts.
