A) Down 3 with 2 seconds left, ball on the 2 foot line, double digit dogs, out of the conference title race, 95% of coaches in America would have gone for it. There's probably a 75% chance of scoring on that play. If Leidner gets in the whole board lauds Claeys as bold and decisive. Can anyone honestly say that they would have been posting on here that the smart play was to kick it if Leidner got in and won the game?
Obviously the previous play was coaching malpractice of epic proportions, but I'm just talking about the decision on the final play.
B) As for how much time they took on the final drive, I'm of two minds there. First, I typically would prefer to see a team losing try to move a little more quickly. I'm not a fan of banking on scoring on that one possession. That being said, almost every coach does that. I've seen that situation a lot, down 1 score with 4 or 5 minutes to play, and almost every time they try to win the game and not give the ball back. Again, this is all hindsight. If Leidner scores at the end would anyone be posting on here that Claeys screwed up by only getting one drive? Or, let's say they hurried and left Michigan 2 minutes, and Michigan went down and scored. How many people would be on here complaining that Claeys screwed up and shouldn't have left them all that time? A lot.
In general I think 95% of coaching decisions are viewed through the lens of hindsight and it drives me crazy. You can't judge the decision by the results.
