Hammer comes down at OSU?

Think back in time. The Minnesota Gophers had to vacate an entire season of BB games because Mickel Thompson sold his complimentary student tickets. The Minnesota Gophers had to vacate a final four season because of academic scandal. And tOSU gets a slap on the wrist. Holy Jesus Martha...where does the NCAA have it's values??? Another example of "it's not whom you know, it's whom you blow." Pure unadulterated Bull$hit!!!!

Selling their bowl rings and "gold pants"?? Damn, these guys are really into the Ohio State experience, not.

We vacated the entire season when Thompson should have been benched for one game. Oh to be one of the chosen ones.

I wonder if they are eligible for the bowl because the bowl invite was set before the determination and the absence of the players may affect attendance at the bowl. I can remember guys being suspended for bowl games, but I believe most of those suspensions were made by the school and not the NCAA.

I don't know about Herron or Posey, but Pryor will be bolting for the NFL now. No chance he stays and serves this suspension. Why would he?

You have a point about Mychel Thompson, but you can't possibly compare OSU players selling Big Ten Championship rings and other minor things to the academic fraud scandal at the U in the late 90's. That was one of the worst scandals in NCAA sports history and for good reason, none of our players were doing their own homework. That is true fraud and true cheating. Selling rings and autographs are not on the same level, not even close.

OMG!! ..... Do you think that some/certain players at tOSU have ANY homework?

ESPN college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit says the suspension of five Ohio State players for the start of next season is "addition by subtraction" and Ohio State can get back to focusing on being a team.

Go Gophers!!

ESPN college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit is not very smart in this case. Ohio State is a 3 or 4 loss team (at best) with one of their backup QBs this year.

I know it goes on at other schools, but we got caught. It was very widespread over a number of years. We got what we deserved and so did OSU. Five game suspension is a stiff penalty, because of this OSU's 2011 season is in the tank, Pryor will now turn pro and those other players are big contributors. What sucks most about this is Wisconsin benefits more than anyone since they are in OSU's division and instead of a Senior Pryor at QB OSU will have some young (and talented I'm sure) QB. I think OSU got a stiff penalty.

This is a joke.

Watch Pryor tear it up against Arkansas in the Sugar Bowl and then just leave for the NFL and never have to serve any suspension.

and somewhere Cam Newton is laughing his arse off.....

Right on. Wow, what a punishment NCAA. But Middle Tennessee better watch out, because the hammer is falling!

The NCAA is a JOKE!

Wisky got their dream division. Only takes a down year at tOSU or PSU and Wisky has a good shot at the Big 10/11/12 title game as winners of the Norris Division.

Football players at OSU, Florida, etc. don't have to 'cheat'. They simply pass. Doesn't matter if they show up, what they get on finals, etc. They pass. At MN, faculty likely won't likely go along with such things, enter Jane Gangelhoff.

So four of those five games (Akron, Toledo, Colorado, Michigan St.) will be in Columbus, with the fifth being on the road at Miami. There's no telling what kind of team Miami will have next season so soon into the tenure of Al Golden, but it's very conceivable that tOSU could go 4-1 or even 5-0 in that stretch even with the suspensions. It's too bad they're not six game suspensions, because the next week after that they're playing Big Red in Lincoln.

Faculty shouldn't go along with any of that stuff. When I attended the U in the late 90's I had Courtney James in some writing course. He showed up for the first class and attended maybe a couple more times all quarter and didn't do any of the work. At the end of the quarter we had a huge project we all had to do in groups of 3 and the two people in his group had to do all the work because he was never there and didn't even show up for the final presentation of the project which was mandatory for a passing grade. Yet somehow he passed the course and was on the court for every Gopher basketball game that season. The whole thing made me sick. It was a disgrace to the U of M.

I'm glad Minnesota has gotten tougher since the academic scandal, that's the way it should be.

I had some classes with hockey and football players when I was at the U, and it's laughable how much class they skip and how little work they do.

The two people in his group should have been happy he never showed. Courtney was as dumb as they come. He would have just ruined the project if he had a hand in it.

As bad as the scandal was, not ALL of the players were having their homework done. It's a disservice to those players to lump them in with the cheaters.

The AD said something like, we told the kids they couldn't gamble on the games or sell their complementary tickets. Unfortunately, we didn't specifically tell them they couldn't sell their $250 championship rings to a booster for $2,500. Hey! They didn't specificall tell 'em, how were they 'sposed to know? Poor, poor dumb kids.

Ah the NCAA money machine rears its ugly head again. Makes me sick. When I heard about the suspension, my first question was "are they out for the bowl game?" only to find out "OH WELL OF COURSE NOT!" Wish there was a way to go about changing this whole rotten system. If they had any cahones whatsoever, they'd suspend them for the bowl game, but heaven forbid anyone forget for a SPLIT second about the almighty dollar. I have more of a problem with the solution than the problem itself. If you're going to hand down this "harsh penalty", man the eff up and suspend them for the bowl game. If you truly mean it, then walk the freaking walk.
