Thank you for your service.

29 seasons. Only surpassed in North American Pro Sports by Mack/A's, Halas/Bears & McGraw/Giants. Tied with other legends, Landry/Cowboys & Lambeau/Packers.

PTI mentioned that 23 of his former players & assistants have been Head Coaches in the NBA or WNBA.

Job well done.

Didn’t he invent the Hack-a-Shaw? Especially in the first minute of the game?

A real class act! Especially towards reporters. Just a wonderful person. Always so respectful during in game interviews.

The way I remember it, Pop had someone foul Shaq like a second after the opening tap. Shaq was completely befuddled with a "WTF!?!?" reaction. The camera's then cut to Pop & Spurs bench who were all just laughing their butts off.

It has been a set up. Shaq got the joke too.

A combination of Pops and RC Buford made San Antonio the best run organization in NBA if not pro sports. Congrats to him on a well-earned retirement.

So did draft lottery luck.

Obviously did all kinds of great things, but he was the driving force behind all the load management nonsense that's practiced by lots of teams.

‘I can’t understand what yer saying with food in your mouth.’ Danny B. Never lets a person live down their mistakes. He is a tiger!

David Robinson and Tim Duncan required a lot of thought! LOL
Sam Bowie, picked stead of Mars Blackmon, says hey and there are a litany of overall first pick flops as well Melvin!!

Including -

Anthony Bennett
Kwame Brown
Michael Olowokandi

Agree that what turns out obvious isn't always at the time but Duncan would have been the consensus number one pick his last two seasons.

The Admiral was Drafted #1 in 1987 which was the season before Pop joined the Spurs as an Assistant Coach.

It was a gutsy pick in some respect by the Spurs because he had to fulfill 2 years of Military Service, having gone to Navy. Rookie season was not until 1989-90.

Some other pretty good talent in the 1987 Draft.

That's just luck.

Every single team was going to pick Tim Duncan #1 overall. It was automatic.
Just like the Zion season, every single team was going to pick Zion #1 overall. It was automatic.

It wasn't a wiser decision by the Spurs than it was by the Pelicans. They were both no-brainers. Other picks just worked out better.

Your three examples were not "no brainers". Not all drafts are the same and not all results are going to be the same.

That's just luck.

Never said that!! You constantly misquote people to win the argument, you miserable Richard!!!

They were three examples of worst number picks in history!!!

Is your reading comprehension thst poor? Just like the Hegseth post, where you berated me about my gambling comments, which I never made!

Not all drafts are the same and not all results are going to be the same.
Stalking me!!!
Get a life Bright Bobby Boy!!!

I’m ignoring you now!!! I win I get the last word!!

My reading comprehension is pretty good, you just can't type. Look at how you communicate and look at how other adults communicate, it's alarming.

I read your post, but the entire conversation is over your head. Someone pointed out that drafting Duncan was a no-brainer and you brought up these meaningless examples. Again, you think you proved a point but you didn't. You missed the point, like usual.

Why would I make fun of you for gambling? I gamble. I would make fun of you about a lot of things (your punctuation, your inability to read or write, lying about being in your 40s, asking your guy friends to bring over the pvss), but gambling, I don't think I ever did make fun of you for that.

You send me another message after sending me this one. You replied to my Fire Hegseth post after you said you were ignoring me and you won. That means you wanted to ignore me but your obsession pulled you back in.

When you lie about putting people on ignore and then reply to them again - you automatically lose. It's really pathetic. This is officially a win for me. It's been decided and you have been demerited 37 Gopherhole points. If you keep it up, we will remove your ability to use an exclamation point.

BTW - You're not in your 40s. No way.

Imagine all coaches treated reporters in such fashion.
Reporters and citizens of Hong Kong won't miss Pop.
Nor will I.

Interesting you pick those 3 as examples. Yes they all sucked, but all 3 were surprise picks. And all were widely panned.

Only Kandi was even on the radar for #1 pick. Bennet and Brown drew massive criticism from the get go.

Tim Duncan was the obvious pick. He was considered better than Robinson before he even played in the NBA; and the only debate is whether you traded Robinson (one of the best players in the league) or made it work.

People wanted Pop investigated for tanking because they were awesome, then sucked for one year, attributed to David Robinson’s injury.

Before that the Spurs came in either 1 or 2 every year, for the previous 7 seasons. Then inexplicably sucked (finished last) Then 1st or 2nd for the next 17 seasons.

Picking Duncan was definitely not a difficult decision.

Not “my list.”

They were from the link I supplied in my reply (post 12). They were listed as their Top 3 worst.

I naively assumed that if I put a link that includes their pictures, people would click on the link and see where those three hoopers were being referenced from🤷‍♂️

No where in any of my comments did I doubt the pick of Robinson or Duncan.

The point in my rebuttal to the OP, is that while the Number 1 pick is great, that doesn’t automatically equate to a successful player on your squad- hence the inclusion of the other names, a rebuttal to his pithy retort.

I thought it was a fairly transparent point, instead of it being opaque, but that doesn’t appear to be the case🤷‍♂️

Except the OP was not speaking about a genereic number 1 pick; the OP was, speaking about specific number one picks.

No one in the world would have said Tim Duncan was a stupid pick. Even if he didn’t turn out. He was still clearly the best one to pick number one that year. David Robinson had some risk, but not because of talent.

The other three were bad ideas. They could have been had later on. They were panned at the time for good reason.

Usually when you cite a source, it should support your point. You should read them first.
