Greetings from WKU

Apparently Western Kentucky has better athletes than most NBA teams with all those 40+ inch verticals, lol. This is like when Florida tried to claim all their skill position guys ran legit sub 4.4 40s

I say that's a bit of an exaggeration considering most NBA players are athletes as well. However I am not exaggerating about some of our players athletic ability. You are more then welcome to YouTube them to verify if you like.

Questions for the WKU guy:

1) You sound disinterested when it comes to Kahlil... do you have high hopes for him, or are the other guards just that much better at this point?

2) In what regard do you hold Willard?

3) Did you cry when Darrin Horn left?

4) How thankful is the WKU faithful that Tanned Tommy never became your head coach?

5) Is it fact or widespread myth that the everyone on campus listens to nothing but WKU-grads, the Nappy Roots?

True story, in ~2002 one of my songs was on 'KISS Kombat' on 103.7 KISS-FM in Milwaukee and we won five times straight... the fifth and final night was against the Nappy Roots (only Britney Spears gave us a closer battle) and their song 'Awnaw'.

They have one legit player over 6'6''?

We better destroy them in the paint...I'm looking forward to it.

Hello all, I know you have been reading our message board and you had one poster make the journey over to the Haven. So I figured I would come over to the Hole and talk hoops with you guys as well. Maybe I can educate some of you on the Toppers.

First for those of you that don't know. Let me give you a run down of our history:

43 conference championships, third-most in NCAA history

42 seasons with 20+ wins, sixth-most in NCAA history

35 All-Americans

13 NIT berths (most of which came when NIT was "the" post-season tourney, and 3 final fours in that)

21 NCAA Tournament berths

14th in NCAA history in all-time wins (1,627)

8th in NCAA history in all-time winning percentage (.673)

7 "Sweet 16" appearances in NCAA tournament

NCAA Final Four in 1971

Now to tell you a little about this years team. This is probably the deepest most athletic team we have had on the hill in 20 years. We can easily go 10 deep without a huge dropoff in talent. Although there is a little after 6 or 7. We have 3 guys on the team with around 45" verticals and a couple others close to 40". Everyone on this team can slam it down. With the horses and athletes we have this year we want to get out and run and apply a full court man to man pressure on the ball with some half court traps thrown in. I'll give you a breakdown of our players.

Pre-season conf. player of the year Sergio "I aint scurred" Kerusch (guard/forward)- What can I say, he is the heart and energy of this team. Has good athleticism. Won our dunk contest 2 of the last 3 years. Great at penetration and getting to the hole. But he likes to take jumpers and chuck 3's a little more then he should. He has a good looking stroke but he settles for the jumper to often. But when he is on, he can't be stopped. Case in point dropping 31 opening day against St. Joes, and shooting 6-8 from 3. But his biggest strength to our team is his rebounding ability. He will come flying in out of nowhere and sky for the rebound. Has been coming off the bench as kind of a wake up call from coach. NBA-type caliber player

Steffphon "Hurcules" Pettigrew (forward)-- He is our workhorse. Nicknamed Hilltopper Hurcules because is a monster. He is built like a D-1 linebacker. He is not flashy, but at the end of the game when you look up at the scoreboard he will have 19 pts and 8 reb. At 6-5 he is small for the post. But he creates a problem for opposing big men. He is fast and can throw his strength around to muscle into good postion on the block. Also has a decent long range jump shot. NBA-type caliber player

"The chosen" Juan Pattillo (forward)--Those of you that watch the game are going to be in for some high light dunks from this guy. He is a monster at the art of finishing at the rim or in traffic. Will get several AND "JUAN's" a game. Nicknames (Air Force "Juan"...The Chosen "Juan"). He has a decent lookin shot, but he puts so much arch on the ball that it often hits the front of the rim. If he can knock that down he is almost unstoppable. But he is really only reliable offensively from 10 feet and and in. He is however a GREAT defender when he wants to be. He can literally guard any position on the court. NBA-type caliber player

Brandon "Snap" Peters (guard)-- Our star freshman recruit. Led Yates HS to #1 in the nation last year and led them in scoring. You may remember Yates as the team from Texas that destroyed a team 171-40 or something like that. He is also an A+ athlete with a 48" vertical. Has a decent shot, but at this point early in his freshman year it looks like defense and driving to the basket is his bread and butter. In our first game he had 9 pts, 7 asst, and 7 steals. He is a pest in the defensive side of the ball and will create several turnovers a game. Looking forward to him being on this team for the next few seasons.

Ken "The Jet" Brown (PG)-- He is one of the fastest players I have ever seen with the ball. He can go end to end in the blink of an eye. Just forget the fact that he sounds like Mike Tyson. He is a JUCO transfer at the Point. Good at distributing the ball and pushing the pase of the game in our favor. Excellent on ball defender as well.

Cliff "Kevin Durants bro" Dixon (Forward/Center)-- Not his brother by any means. But then again they are only half brothers. He is athletic and just an all around hustle guy. Last season he thought he was a guard and tried to play on the perimeter way too much. This season he gets it and is quickly becoming a contributor for this team.

Caden "Butters" Dickerson (guard)-- Our 3 pt specialist. Although he had surgery in the off season and hasnt had the same stroke so far to begin the season. I am sure it will be back at some point though.

"Can you smell what Jamal is Crookin" Jamal Crook (pg)-- Not a great shot, good distribution and tenacious defender. Doesnt push tempo as much as Brown but can still run with the best of them. Can be a bit foul and turnover prone however.

Those are our key players. I am sure a couple more of the fresh/newcomers will get some minutes as well. Kahlill McDonald is another 3 pt specialist off the bench for us and Kene Anyigbo is the next Pettigrew when he learns the college game a little more.

Any more questions you guys may have for me feel free to ask away. I look forward to our game against you guys tomorrow night. And wish you luck the rest of the season. I hope you all only lose one game all year ;)

My school MTSU will kick your behind this year and will bring you back to earth again.

Maybe we can have a halftime dunk contest between Rodney Williams, Trevor Mbakwe and The Chosen Juan.

Strange Brew ?

Make up our own.

Al "The Talon" Nolen - swoops in from out of nowhere to steal the ball away from opposing guards.

Blake "The Hoff" Hoffarber - cool under pressure and contributes in a ton of ways

Rodney "Trapeze" Williams - a real high-wire act, averaging 1.5 ESPN top 10 plays per game.

Trevor "The Beast" Mbakwe - pulls down every rebound in sight and causes opposing bigs to quake at the mere mention of his name.

Ralph Sampson - I give up. I'm all out of nicknames.

I like these. Here are some more/alternatives:

Rodney "Hot Rod" Williams
Ralph "Not as tall as my dad" Sampson
Colton "Yankton Yeti" Iverson
Trevor "Mmbakalaka" Mbakwe
Chip "The Little Chipper" Armelin
"Baby Blake" Hoffarber
Austin "Velociraptor" Hollins
Mo "Seismic Activity" Walker

You ask 10 different people you will get 10 different answers. I will tell you what I was told when I was an incoming freshman. Big Red is the embodied spirit of the fan base of WKU. That is what I tell everyone atleast

Look I'm not being mean about this but your statement

is absolutely 100% rediculous.

Only 1 guy in the entire Pre-Draft camp last year recorded a 40 inch vertical and that's with incredible athletes like John Wall, Avery Bradley, Stanley Robinson and Wesley Johnson in that class. You're really trying to tell us that Western Kentucky has 3 guys that have verticals a half foot better than those guys?

You were in a band that beat Britney Spears in a radio contest? Celeb status anyone?

Ferreal what song?

i Get out of here with that crap. The fact that you believe that immediately invalidates everything else you've said as it proves you have no idea what you're talking about.

No need to be a jerk about it oleboy. Yes, its a questionable claim but all you have to say is "thats a questionable claim"

serisouly i agree with oleboy, and im not dissing WKU they are a great mid major, but even rodney williams who is one of the most athletic players in the country records an exact 40" vert, and a kid with a 48 inch vert? really? thats like me saying rodney has a 50 inch vert because he can 360 from a foot inside the free throw line. cmon rojo.

you're right. I got a little carried away. My apologies to the poster and the board will edit

Some good dunks

but nothing that spectacular. It also sounds like there are only 100 people in the arena (there is so much reverb) and only about 10 of them are clapping.
Ah well. They look athletic enough, although a little undersized. I think that will give them the most problem in the paint. There is no preparation for facing two guys taller than 6-10 at the same time. We still need to be more efficient on offense and not stray from perimeter shooters on D quite so much. It would be helpful to make some free throws, too. I think we struggle at times but gut this one out.

Got a lil rough at the end there LOL, but this is 100% on point. It's not even questionable, it's just 100% not true. There is a zero percent chance that WKU has 3 guys with 45" verticals, it's just not true. You don't have to blow up your athletes to ridiculous levels to make the point. They have great athletes, okay, but let's not go overboard.

I do believe we should win this game. Not a beating or anything, I just think we have the superior size and strength, as well as the athletes to match up with WKU inside. Perimeter....I'm a little iffy, our guards will have to come and play, but down low, we should win that battle if our bigs show up.

WKU vs the Jesus Christ All-Stars in Heaven, in a pick-up game, who wins?

(full court, neutral site game, played half way between "the hill" and heaven, on a court in the clouds)

1) Not that I am disinterested in him. I just think he is the fartherst behind from a defensive standpoint. And seems more one dimensional on offense then the others.

2) Willard is a great coach no doubt. One thing he said a few years after he left was that he wished he never left WKU. And said to this day he regretted that decision.

3) Hellllll no. I along with a lot of other topper fans were extremely glad when he left town. He is an ok coach, but he is about the biggest d-bag I have ever met.

4) Lol that is debateable amongst the fan base.

5) Myth. I mean they were as big here as they were anywhere else. I actually went to the same High School as those guys. I see a couple of them at my gym from time to time still. The biggest band to come out of BG that a lot of people here listen to is " Cage the Elephant". I am sure you guys have heard the song "Aint no rest for the wicked". They are the #1 selling band in europe and are about to go on their USA tour soon. Check them out if you havent heard them. What was your band and song?

Your right I miss spoke apparently. I looked at the vertical listings for our guys and only one is over 45" and that is brandon peters. Pattillo, Sergio, Pettigrew, and Brown are all around the 38" mark. I apologize for the misinformation. I guess when I see Juan get his head above the rim I assumed he was that high off the ground.

here is some highlights for you guys. And the dunk contest video you guys posted is from last year. I am not even going to post this seasons becuase there were a lot of missed dunks more then making them because they did that last after we had already played a non-stop 20 minute pick up game with the guys worn out.

Highlights vs Alabama A&M:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=URAkRA6FXeQ

Snap Peters:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HqBqBI4lGUQ

Once again I definately admit to posting wrong information on the vertical of all the guys. I definately got a little carried away on that one without double checking my stats first. But as far as the other info I posted, no holes in those statements.

Question for you guys though. Does your team tend to play more of a half court set or do you guys ever get out and run? I have only been able to catch the last 10 minutes or so of your game vs Siena. If you all are able to dictate the tempo on us and make this more of a half court game rather then getting out and running the ball then I think it could be a long night for us.

Also noticed last game you all talked about how poor you shot FT's. Let's hope this doesnt turn into a FT shooting contest then. Because we shot 24-50 from the line monday night. We see a repeat performance like that and you guys are likely to win by double digits.

usually we play halfcourt in b10 cause you cant run on the teams, too well coached, too deep, too athletic, but in non conference we like to run a little. Al nolen, prolly the fastest guy on the team is averaging 4.5 steals a game, and when he gets those steals or disrupts the pg it usually turns into fastbreak points and layup drills. just hope your pg is quick, great handles, and smart with the ball or it will be a long night. we beat osu with evan turner w/ nolen on the court, w/o him we lose by 20.

to add, we get lots of turnovers, i think we were top 25 in the country for forced turnovers, but im prolly wrong. at least top 3 in the b10 though. (last year) as with any tubby smith team the emphisis is good team defense, lately we havnet done that too well, but they will gel. We beat butler last year with our D, i think we can do the same thing this time of year as we did last in the 76 classic.

See and the PG position was our big ? coming into the season. But Brown has filled the void nicely in the first two games as the starter. He has been faster then anyone on the court we have played thus far. But then again we haven't really played anyone of note yet. If Nolen is in the game when our back-up pg Crook comes in then I could see Nolen giving him fits.

If you all are able to dictate the tempo on us and make this more of a half court game rather then getting out and running the ball then I think it could be a long night for us.

I was thinking about our Illinois game a few years ago when we beat them like 58-36 or something ungodly like that.

Tubby can slow it down with the best of them. :)
