Gophs traveling Wednesday, not ideal

I have been amazed by how many of the comments here were actually suggesting various activities that the team could do while in Las Vegas. If any of you think for one moment that coach Kill is going to let his team loose in Vegas you haven't learned what coach Kill is all about. He is a great teacher of life lessons but Vegas isn't a classroom.

Fair points. I may be thinking about bowl games or teams that play Hawaii at Hawaii. I never played at the D1 level, so I can't speak from personal experience. I do recall people that I've known of say that road games were stressed in their recruitment. My thought was maybe some programs do have activities during road games. My personal thoughts were maybe a Non Strip type team activity could be an option for the team post game? Friday? The first game of the season, especially when played on a Thursday, could present the opportunity for a team activity without disrupting the next weeks normal schedule.

Ummm, guys, this is a regular season trip, not a bowl trip. If the players want to have fun in a city they need to win 6 games.

Bowl games are whole different can of worms as far as team activities. The teams as part of their participation in the bowl are normally scheduled for a fair amount of non practice activities. I suspect coaches try to keep players focused on the task on hand but they also realize that the players need to be able to enjoy the accomplishment.

Again fair points. This is just thread that is born from a dead period prior to the first game. Since we are on the subject, do teams typically have a non football team activity if they play at Hawaii?

This thread is now getting dumb. They will fly in, do a run through, eat together, go to bed, get up, eat together, meet on game plan, eat together, get dressed, play the game, shower, get on a plane and fly home. Anything else is stupid.

I can almost guarantee you that they will be staying somewhere on Boulder Highway, plenty of ways from the Strip. If they booked a casino (for capacity reasons) I'm thinking either Sam's Town or East Side Cannery. More than likely, they booked far enough in advance to take up a "normal" hotel. I'm guessing they booked one of the hotel chains within a few blocks of Sam Boyd stadium. When you get a couple blocks off the Strip, LV looks and feels just like any other city, with the exception of slot machines in the 7-11, K-Mart, and Wal-Mart stores. There will not be a lot of distractions to deal with.

Travelling on Wednesday, for guys this young, no big deal.

I am guessing, more than likely, yes. I will also state I have no experience nor anything else to back up that statement.

A trip to Pearl Harbor is something everyone should do (in my opinion) and I believe most teams would / or should include that in their travel itinerary along with trip to Punchbowl National Cemetary. Beyond those activities, I have no clue. Out of conference, guessing it is high probability. In conference (Mountain West)......probably once every other year?

Most coaches seem to recognize Peal Harbor as a valuable learning experience and is probably something his / her players may never have an opportunity to experience again.

I also believe that most coaches recognize that a return trip to Vegas is highly probable in their future (convention, trade show, leisure, wedding, etc.)

Correct. They will not be doing anything other than football related activities on this trip.

You are absolutely right, Sir, except for "now getting dumb". That happened a lot earlier.

How much sight-seeing do they do on other road games? Why should Las Vegas be any different.

You got that right! I now waiting for somebody to ask how many frequent flyer miles a player gets?

From the strib: The Gophers will travel to Nevada on Wednesday morning, and they will stay at a hotel far away from the Las Vegas Strip, on the outskirts of town closer to Sam Boyd Stadium.

Kill said he is not worried about his players getting into trouble in the so-called Sin City, mostly because they will have activities and meetings scheduled for the entire time they are there.

"We keep them pretty regimented, and don't allow them a lot of [free] time," Kill said. "We've kept their schedules awfully heavy, which has been good. And they've handled it well."

Good.

The boys are there to play a football game. There will be no sight seeing (for a bowl game maybe, but not this). There will be lots of organized team activities. They will probably be able to relax and goof around by the pool the night before, but that will be it. This is how it goes when you travel - it's time to play football and nothing else matters. Even though it is Las Vegas, this will be handled in a very business-like, workman-like way by the team. I can't wait for Thursday night to see some real live action Gopher football!
