Gophers Win B1G Team Title
GENEVA, Ohio -- The Golden Gopher women's track & field team won eight events on the way to winning the 2021 Big Ten Conference team title. Led by multiple individual titles from Amira Young on the final day of competition, the Maroon & Gold scored 138 points to cruise to the team title at the 2021 Big Ten Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.
The team win marked Minnesota's fifth indoor and eighth overall Big Ten championship in women's track & field. Along with Young's two titles in the 60 meters and 200 meters, Abigail Schaaffe won the 600 meters and joined Jayla Campbell, Janielle Josephs, and Val Larson to win the 4x400-meter relay on Saturday. During the first two days of competition, Allison Gerads (pentathlon), Bethany Hasz (3,000 meters), and Tess Keyzers (weight throw), and the distance medley relay team of Anastasia Korzenowski, Larson, Libby Halbmaier, and Abby Kohut-Jackson all finished as event champions as well.
The Gophers led throughout the entire competition, finishing with 138 team points ahead of runner-up Michigan (80 points) and Iowa (75 points) in third place.
"The women were just amazing to watch this week," director of track & field/cross country Matt Bingle said. "They were hungry the whole way, and they were calm, confident, and mature. It was easy -- the coaches just had to get out of the way. They knew what they were going to do. It started on day one, with the DMR, Bethany, and Tess. We came out right away and won those three events, and they never stopped. On day two, there were a lot of great things with people qualifying and PRing, and they were just pouring energy into one another. Today was even better than you could have scripted it.
"This championship is different because of everything that happened behind the scenes to get us here. Our coaching staff, our medical team, and our administration -- our whole athletic department wins this one. It took our whole department. This is a department-wide win, and we really appreciate everything everyone did to give us this opportunity to compete."
Young remained undefeated on the season in the 60 meters, winning her first B1G crown in 7.29 seconds and earning her fifth-straight 60-meter title of the year. In the 200 meters, Young improved on her own Minnesota program record for the third time this season, clocking a career-best time of 23.24 seconds on the way to the B1G crown.
Along with Young's titles for 20 points, the Gophers added 15 more points in the short sprints as Akilah Lewis, Lexi Romero, and Lauren Hansen also scored. Lewis placed third in the 60 meters, running 7.39 seconds, to give the Gophers 16 points in the team standings in the 60 meters. Romero came in third in the 200 meters in a career-best 24.10 seconds while Hansen added three points in sixth place (24.61 seconds).
The Gophers took home the top two places in the 600 meters as Schaaffe won the B1G crown in her Big Ten debut, recording a career-best time of 1:27.96 to move into fourth on Minnesota's all-time list. Larson ran a career-best 1:28.67 to earn her third-straight B1G runner-up title in the 600 meters and move into fifth in Gopher history as well. Schaaffe and Larson also teamed up with Campbell and Josephs to run the second-fastest 4x400-meter relay in Minnesota history, winning the B1G title in 3:35.51.
Saturday's other top finishes on the track saw Anastasia Korzenowski and Josephs place third in their respective individual events. Korzenowski ran 4:44.95 for bronze in the mile while Josephs used a season-best time of 53.96 to finish third in the 400 meters.
The Gophers secured seven points in the 800-meter final as well. In her B1G debut, Erin Reidy finished fourth in the 800 meters in a career-best 2:08.21, good for ninth in Minnesota history while Molly Roach came in seventh with a PR of 2:10.00.
Lexy Berger and Devia Brown led the Gophers in the field events on Saturday as they each finished sixth in their respective events. Berger cleared a career-best 4.05m (13-03.50 ft.) to finish sixth in pole vault and move into a tie for eighth in Minnesota history in the event while Brown recorded a mark of 16.05m (52-08.00 ft.) to finish sixth in shot put.
"Last year, we left the Big Ten meet feeling really disappointed," Bingle said. "It's cool to see how they've grown and matured, especially with everything they have gone through over the last year. This week, they came in here ready to go, and they all just did what they were supposed to do."
This year's team trophy marks the Gopher women's first Big Ten indoor title since 2018. Minnesota also won three-straight indoor championships in 2007, 2008, and 2009. Most recently, Minnesota won the 2018 Big Ten outdoor title, having also taken home outdoor B1G crowns in 2006 and 2016.
On the men's side, the Gophers finished fifth in the team standings with 70 points led by Owen Hoeft's Big Ten title in the mile and runner-up finishes from Ben Psicihulis (600 meters), Kaleb Siekmeier (weight throw), and the 4x400-meter relay team of Jade Reicks, Collin Sieffert, Grant Fuller, and Psicihulis.
