Gophers to play North Dakota in 2028 & 2030

I think the money differential is pretty marginal, and not worth it for the attitude that the Dakota schools bring -- especially the North Dakota schools -- where every player treats like a "I'll show the Gophers for not recruiting me!" If you win, you were supposed to, and if you lose, it's a monumental upset.
that's my issue, there is nothing to gain from playing any of Dakota's

still scared of NDSU, wow.
congrats on your 2 lopsided wins
not scared of NDSU

but breaking news, they're not a gopher rival and there is no reason to legitimize the rivalry NDSU fans seem to think there is.

There is nothing to gain, we win it, it's meh
we lose, we have NDSU trolls harping for decades after

Depends on if you want to watch non scholarship or 63 scholarship FCS football. Mankato would be better football than the non level, not that there’s anything wrong with that.
Yeah. My point is if I’m going to watch non major college football I’d rather watch teams I have a closer connection to. Same reason I’d go to a bethel vs St. John’s game before a South Dakota vs North Dakota game

I don't really mind a game like this once every few years, but I don't like playing it on "opening night" and I don't like playing it twice in three years.

Yeah the

Hey let's give some local regional team additional national exposure on TV ....

That seems fundamentally a bad idea.

Stupid.

Big Ten should ban FCS games.
I agree. I thought back in the day Delaney had a plan to end this...or at least most of it.
I know Bowling Green beat us this year, but it is hard to get pumped up for those games.
Think TCU...sure, we lost those games too but at least the fans were excited to watch it.

It's one of the only examples of trickle down economics working well. I don't really want our money funding a (former) chief rival's athletic department, but for the health of the sport I like playing FCS teams.

It was banned for a few years, then rescinded. It was too hard to schedule non-conference, since most most FBS teams will request a home and home, or a lot more money to just play a one off year.

I thought they did at one point?
They did and then they realized that with a 9 game conf schedule, every other year each team needs 3 home games every other year for 7 home games…and that’s expensive if you limit the pool to buy from

There also is a “power 5 requirement” that they wrote in exceptions to later to include BYU, service academies, etc

It's really not that hard if you schedule home/home's with other P5 schools. That gives you 10 P5 teams, and thus if you align it so your home game is a year with only 4 Big Ten home games, then you get 5 home games a year with P5.

Then just buy 2 home games a year from the MAC and Mountain West teams. Done

That doesn't sound so easy if there are 60 P5 schools (plus a handful more Notre Dame, BYU, et al) and there are only 24 MAC & Mtn West schools (who probably want a home game once in a while), there's only so many to go around.

Even when the Gophers have played UNLV, Colorado St and Fresno St recently they were home and homes.

While I hate the idea of scheduling the ilk of North Dakota, I an understand the need for doing it once in a while. Twice in 3 years. Bleh.

The MAC/Mountain West teams want $1M+ for the buy games. Doing that vs paying $500k for UND doesn't make financial sense. Those MAC/MW schools don't bring in enough extra ticket revenue to justify the $$ outlay for the game.

If you figure $60 per ticket the MAC/MW schools would have to bring in almost 10k more fans than a FCS school for the U to come out ahead financially. They don't. Not even close.

Great for recruiting, game day experience, revenue, and keeping us riveted for the next 7 years! Planning my tailgate already.

As long as we open with the student section singing "da da da da da Drop the Puck! da da da da da Sioux Suck!

Not wrong.

But leads right back to what I said in post #26.

No scholarships though. Uff da.
I hope they eventually build up to the Missouri Valley level. They might be content with the Drake level, though.

According to the OPE Athletics website, Drake's football budget was around $1M, while UND's was around $5.5M. (these are 2019-20 school/fiscal year)

Yes if were going to play an FCS team would rather it be St Thomas that one of the Dakota schools.

I did NOT authorize such a website. ;)

Down the road, could certainly see them stepping up. How long that takes, who knows.

Can't believe some people in this thread that have already forgotten about Bowling Green. We paid 2x as much to Bowling Green as we would to a Dakota and it was far more embarassing to lose to Bowling Green.

Absolutely silly to think that losing to FCS North Dakota wouldn't be far worse than losing to FBS Bowling Green.
