Zach McCabe, a 6-foot-7, 205-pound forward from Sioux City (IA) Bishop Heelan, is off to a strong July. He helped lead the All-Iowa Attack to the Next Level Invitational title and his strong showing Sunday at the NY2LA Sports Summer Jam will likely earn him a scholarship offer from Minnesota, according to sources close to the situation. McCabe is an excellent outside shooter with good fundmentals.

Zach McCabe has scholarship offers from Butler, Northern Iowa, Indiana State, Iowa, Nevada and Rice and has received interest from schools such as Indiana and Notre Dame. Minnesota is expected to extend a scholarship offer once schools can contact players.

McCabe received a scholarship offer from homestate when Marshalltown forward Chanse Creekmur de-committed. However, the Hawkeyes have already received commitments have already received three verbals.

McCabe is also a standout quarterback who is getting recruiting looks in that sport and South Florida has offered him a football scholarship.

McCabe is playing for the All-Iowa Attack AAU program that also won the Jayhawk Invitational. His busy basketball schedule will likely prevent him from attending any football camps this summer.

McCabe was a second-team Sunday Register Class 3-A all-state selection as he averaged 16 points, nine rebounds and six assists He made the all-tournament team after helping Heelan win a state title along with senior Brennan Cougill, has signed with Iowa and will be a freshman this fall.

Go Gophers!!

Also Well Regarded As Football (QB) Recruit

Notre Dame is interested, among others.

I really got a kick out of the Burleson / Wrenn combo package drama. While Wrenn did put up some good numbers for a while in college...Kevin seemed to have the better college / pro career.

I can't see Tubby offering anybody unless he thinks they can really ball.

Thanks for posting the article. I'm a little surprised we're gonna be offering him but then again I don't know anymore about him that what was just posted.

He shot the hell out of the ball in front of Coach Taylor, thats why he got an offer.

Define "Offer"

Johnny, do you have any insight on what "offer" means here? Is this a "you commit and you have a scholarship" offer or "if our primary target goes elswhere, you have a scholarship" offer. There must be some tiered process the staff goes through in making "offers" as many more scholarships are offered than are available.

I have the same concerns others do about the number of scholarships available. Does this mean they are waving teh white flag on Barnes?

I can't see how Tubby could take both of them.

Sure we could, it would just mean we'd have to wait a year to get another PG or post man.

A class w/ a lights-out shooter, a high-flying wing, and either a highly rated PG or post would be a great class.

McCabe already has offers from Butler and Iowa and it appears that Wisconsin, Michigan, Colorado and Arizona St. are about to offer. With those options, why go to a school where you're probably not going to play much as a freshman?

Can I ask where this information is from? I do not recall hearing UW mentioned with McCabe. UW only has one available spot for the 2010 class and the only two outstanding offers to fill that spot are to guards. Offering McCabe does not make sense from that perspective.

I don't have a link to give you but I've read this elsewhere. i.e. what Iowa Rivals mods are saying apparently. It does sound like Bo saw him in Milwaukee. I don't know about an offer but it's been intimated that they are probably going to offer Thursday. Take it fwiw.

Well, that's what happens when your team gets better. The recruiting pitch changes from "you'll get plenty of playing time right away" to "you want to be the best, come and compete against and for the best." Besides, we now have great size and athleticism for the foreseeable future but if last year showed anything, it's that our glaring weakness still is a lights-out shooter.

If he prefers to play early and often for a lousy team, then he'll stay home and play for Iowa.

Holy Man, Tubby doesn't play around with recruiting like that, if he offers you a scholarship, then it means he likes you and wants you to play for him. He doesn't mess around. Now there are times when you are recruiting multiple guys for one spot so the first come, first serve rule applies.
Last year when Colvin was playing headgames with MN, they called his bluff and just moved on and grabbed Cobbs.

Mccabe offer will be legit and if he wanted to commit, they would take him. Personally, I would prefer Creekmur, who also can expect a Minnesota offer soon.

There will always be room for Harrison no matter who else they sign and what position they play.

Darius Smith (not Chris Colvin) was the Chicago PG who couldn't decide (in time) last fall.

Wholeheartedly AGREE when Tubby offers, he'll accept a verbal that day if the recruits wants to commit. No games from Tubby.

Harrison Barnes can sign with any school he wants, whenever he wants. He's THAT good. He'll play G in college (I think).

You've been high on Creekmur for a while. What is it about Creekmur that you like so much? Iowa fans have been and are still under the impression that Lickliter's interest in Creekmur waned and the two parted ways much like Tubby and Nate Garth did.

Anyone that knows would not say that Iowa's interest waned. Creekmur decommitted the exact same time as there was the mass exodus of four players from the current team this spring. Creekmur left on his own accord. They did almost immediately offer McCabe after that though.

Many think that Jake Kelly, who left the team, told Creekmur some not so flattering details. But that part is speculation.

Knows what? That's the story from their "insiders".

Anyway, McCabe's stock is soaring. He has now picked up offers from Arizona St., Utah, Minnesota, and Virginia over the past few days. It looks like Lickliter might end up with his first blue chip recruit at Iowa.

Why do you think Lickliter will land this kid? McCabe has had an Iowa offer for almost four months now. If Lickliter was going to get this kid, he needed to land him prior to the July evaluation period, IMO. There had to be a reason McCabe was waiting around. Now, bigger and better programs with bigger name coaches are getting in on the act. I think this kid will end up somewhere other than Iowa.

Why do you think Lickliter will land this kid?

The Iowa guys (i.e. Tom Kakert) that have spoken to him are confident that the teams that have currently offered him are no threat to Iowa. The only threats to Iowa are considered Notre Dame and a big time program like Kansas.

Also, McCabe has stated that he's going to make a decision before the end of July. There doesn't seem to be enough time for him to take visits to Minneapolis, Tempe, Charlottesville, etc.

He's already visited Tempe. I'll predict he ends up there.

As I said, if this kid is so sold on being a Hawkeye, then why wait? He's had an Iowa offer since March.

The Iowa spin on Creekmur is understandable but complete BS.

Mccabe made alot of the statements about when he will commit before he had all these new offers so I think the chances of him waiting into August are pretty good. I think most shcools recruiting him know that Iowa is the heavy favorite but as was said earlier, he has waited this long, why rush it now when you have so many more options.

Yes, the people who speak to the recruits and in the program. I'm sure Iowa would be very happy with McCabe but Creekmur's decision was much, much more due to Kelly and other leaving than it was Iowa "cooled" on him. Sure after he said he wasn't coming, they knew he was buying into the bad vibes around and I'm sure they weren't concerned with trying to keep him. But if he was "all about Iowa" as a program they would be ecstatic to have him.

Video of McCabe.

Here's hoping Creekmur is the better of the two, as others have suggested is the case.

If you were to make a determination from that Youtube video, I think it is safe to say that this won't be "the one that got away".

Obviously, Tubby and Co have seen a lot more than 4-5 plays, but I hope we have bigger fish out there.

Completely agree. That may have been the least impressive "highlight reel" I've ever seen. Kinda slow wings who change speeds to get into the lane and draw contact while not even getting off a legitimate shot don't really do it for me. From what I've heard he's a shooter. So maybe... show him knocking down a jumper? Maybe? Congrats to Iowa on the get though, based solely on this thread (minus the youtube) he sounds like a legit player... and the type that we desperately lacked last year.
