Gophers' Selection Sunday "Magic Number" Is 21

Need to go 12-6 to reach Selection a goal of 20 wins before the BTT. I very much doubt that will happen especially with all the injury hits the rotation took, but I think this group can go 7-13 or maybe 8-12 if the rest of the team stays healthy. The starting five or what's left of it fits really well together, but there's going to be foul trouble against bigger teams so Turner going to need to make himself useful. Hopefully Gizzi can get a rotation a game on defense and Kai can gain some comfy with his shot.

I just realized we only play Purdue, Michigan, MSU, Iowa, Illinois and Nebraska once. Those are currently the highest rated B1G teams in the NET. Schedule sets up nicely. We've been pretty bad away from the Barn, so if we're going to get to above .500 in conference play, we need to play much better on the road. We'll know a lot more after the next 4 B1G games. All winnable IMO.

The four Big 10 games coming up are winnable… 3-1 in those four games..
If NW is without Martinelli than that's one we need to get on the road. Interesting we have three in a row at home, our two biggest rivals with the Muss bus sandwiched in the middle. They're all getable

I think the losses to SF, Stanford and Santa Clara could come back to haunt them. If they could replay them now, they might win them all.

Win the next 2, that puts us at .500 in Q1-Q3 games and 12-5 overall. It would certainly give us a chance heading into the final 7 weeks of the season. Need the next two though to have a realistic chance.

@SelectionSunday does 21-10 still feel like the needed goal or how's the bubble shaping up? Not even a conversation I thought would remotely be mentioned after how the year started but happy to see the team coming together and showing some of that grit they'll need to try keep this ride going as long as they can

11-5 the rest of the way feels like a tall task, but with how this team has come together and is playing, hey why not us?

Thanks for asking.

It’s looking like it’ll be a weak bubble, which is a good thing for the Gophers. At this point I’d lean toward the number being a little lower than 21, perhaps about 19? That would mean going 10-6 the rest of the way. 13-7 in the Big Ten certainly would feel NCAA tourney worthy despite the poor non-conference performance. My main concern would be their non-conference SOS ranking.

Can or does the committee weigh recent results more? Do they acknowledge teams that have a strong resume later in the year with weak results early in the year? I remember this being a media talking point in the past, but I don’t know if the committee can actually take it into account.

They do not give more weight to recent results.

The schedule is actually looking a bit softer that I would have guessed to start the year.

Done with Iowa and Purdue. Only play Michigan MSU and Illinois once. Those 3 teams are the only 3 that i think just outclass us enough talent wise to feel great about.

The others I feel good about. Yes Nebraska is playing well, Becky badger is always tough, OSU UCLA Indiana will be tough, but there are some winnable games. To me USC Washington Oregon and Maryland look like teams that are ready to quit, and then mix in the Penn state Rutgers of the world and hey, we might be cooking!!
