"The day before the Gophers played host to Illinois, coach Richard Pitino contemplated the worth of his point guard, DeAndre Mathieu.

“I don’t know where we’d be without him; that’s really the great question,” Pitino said. “I think about that a lot.”

Pitino got a good, hard glimpse at that world Wednesday night against the Illini."

Coach P. is quoted in this article as saying if Mathieu had washed out, Dre would have played the point.

What's your point? Who else would have played PG? Isn't it 100% obvious that Dre Hollins would have been the PG?

Yeah, kind of like when Math goes to the bench. Is that a surprise or something?

With Math on the bench the offense pretty much stalls also.

The point is very simple. There has been an ongoing debate on this board for several years, that Dre is not a PG. Coach P. checks in and says yes he is.

Madtown must be shoveling snow or still in bed or something.

Stop it. Dre was point guard last year and would obviously have been this year. You are either deliberately misrepresenting what people are saying or you are dim.

Dre Hollins would have been the point guard because he would have been the best player suited to play the position. That does not mean he is a true point guard, that his best position is point guard, or that he should play point guard. He would have been the point guard by default because someone has to man the position.

I don't care to join the debate of whether or not he is a point guard, but that logic doesn't make any sense. Pitino has played Austin at the 4 some this year, does that make him a power forward? Sometimes if you lack depth you have to play guys out of position.

.....and Oto at the 5. Would anyone call Oto a true Big Ten Center?

You may have missed the debate last year because you were still in high school. You're not still in high school are you?

I guess Howie might. He might have to watch his highlights on YouTube to be sure though.

I don't watch highlight films anymore. I found out unlike football film, basketball film is deceiving. Also, football film is for recruiting and basketball film is for entertainment.

You're getting closer I guess, but your reading comprehension still needs work.

Back to the original article. I had actually just starting working on a blog yesterday afternoon about this, but Amelia beat me (and did a much better job, obviously)...great minds :).

What I looked at was turnovers, instead of points.

Dre has had 19 games where he's had 3 or less turnovers
8 games where he's had 4 of more turnovers

Out of the #Gophers 10 losses, Dre had 4+ turnovers in 6 of those games. The other ones were Syracuse where he only had 1...and they are the #1 team in the country until at least tomorrow, and played really well during that game. Northwestern was another one - and we all know we could have won that game and should have. The Badger loss was the next one, and then Illinois...which we really just need to erase from our memory. Plus, he only played 24 minutes in the IL game, so less time for TO's since he had a lot in the 1st half.

We've only had 2 games that we've won where Dre has had 4 or more TO's - those were New Orleans (and let's be honest, our women's team could have beaten them) and Northwestern. He actually only had 4 in each of these.

What does all this babbling mean? That basically, if Mathieu can keep to 3 TO's or less, we have a pretty good chance of winning. Out of our 17 wins, Dre has had 3 or less TO's in 15 of those games.

I'll take it that you know I'm right, but you don't want to admit it to save face. Thanks.

The success of the Point Guard dictates the outcome of the game. I know, been there, done that. There is lots of pressure on little Dre. None of you could handle it.

Not sure what your point is. Obviously, a sane coach would play Dre over Mav at PG if Lil Dre wasn't here or washed out. What exactly are the other options? It doesn't mean that we aren't better with Dre at shooting guard vs. point guard.

Looking forward to the Little Dre vs Aaron Craft matchup #2 ... Last game Dre had 13 pts with only 3 to's .. Craft had 7pts with 5 to's .. Should be interesting.

Read my post one more time without moving your lips.

Howie either has no point, or he thinks what Pitino said proves Howie correct, even though it doesn't.

What you have to understand is Howie is a great Gophers fan, which we all appreciate. However, he's a little slow.

Sorry; didn't realize that he rides the short bus. Thanks for the heads up; I'll refrain from responding to his future posts out of respect for his situation
