Gophers recruiting prize Emmanuel Karmo says Michigan and others ‘definitely came at me’

Cooper linebacker Emmanuel Karmo verbally committed to the Gophers in the spring, but that didn’t make the weeks and months leading up to the early football signing day less suspenseful.

Michigan, Nebraska and Wisconsin kept recruiting the four-star linebacker hard, especially the Wolverines until the very end.

“They definitely came at me,” Karmo said. “I just told them, no. I wanted to stay committed to Minnesota.”

The state’s No. 1 senior prospect officially signed Wednesday to stay home and play for P.J. Fleck. As he talked about why, his emotions poured out during a ceremony at Cooper.

“They wanted to build a relationship with my parents,” Karmo said at a table with his mother and father sitting next to him. “I feel like that’s very big to me because where would I be without my parents.”

Karmo choked up when talking specifically about how hard his mother worked to support the family, so this was his chance to give back to her.

“My mom means a lot to me, and she really wanted me to go to the U,” Karmo said. “I feel like this is the least I can do for her.”

Seems like all we ever talk about these days is money so nice to see a story like this as a reminder that it isn't just about money for every player. For some there are factors more important than how much a team is willing to pay them.

There will more of this for all teams. Why its so wonderful to see OSU and their 20 million lose.

Love to see high caliber players who WANT to play for the hometown school. Especially when that talent is coupled with character. Karmo appears to be a very high character young man who seems to have his priorities straight. Being grateful and expressing that loyalty to family by wanting to stay near and help provide for them is awesome.

“As long as my mom is taken care of, I’m straight,” Karmo said. “I don’t need no big deal or anything like that. I just want to get developed and eventually get to the NFL.”

And while everyone says that players should simply chase the highest NIL offers....that's not always the wisest decision. In basketball....I completely understand it (especially for guys like Payne and Hawk). But in football.....unless you are a mega superstar.....the NIL deals these guys get will likely be a pittance compared to what they'll make in the NFL. And there is a way higher chance to make it to the NFL than the NBA. A few hundred thousand dollars is obviously great....but that will be nothing compared to what guys like Karmo and Perich will (should) make in the NFL. And in terms of development.....getting on the field early is a positive thing.
