Per Marcus:

Monday was a good day for Gophers basketball recruit Parker Jefferson.

The 6-10 Inglewood High School senior put on a show for fans watching the MLK Classic in Southern California with his first career triple-double.

Jefferson’s 18 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists helped to lead Inglewood to 92-90 victory at Los Alamitos. His first double-figure assist game also came just two turnovers.

“About time,” Jefferson joked. “Felt great. I had six assists in the first half, so I had a feeling it would be that type of game. I’ve never had that many in a single game.”

Inglewood, led by Jefferson and five-star junior guard Jason Crowe, has won 11 straight games. What’s been the secret to success besides a rare triple-double from their big man?

“I think just understanding that it all starts with our defense,” said Jefferson, who had his senior night Wednesday. “And we’ve learned to trust each other and the coaches more and more every game.”

Jefferson’s been watching the Gophers closely this season. He was excited to see them pick up their first Big Ten win last week with a thrilling overtime game against Michigan on Dawson Garcia’s buzzer-beater.

“It was insane!” said Jefferson before his future team won Tuesday at Iowa. “Just the right kind of win we needed.”

As we consider what will happen in the offseason... the three recruits Ben has picked up certainly look to me like they would be Ben's best recruited class. Jefferson looks like an athletic big forward a little bit in the mold of Garcia. Ross is a great athlete at 6-6 who plays well on both ends. Shinholster can shoot it and is a smooth athlete as well. These three appear to be well rounded basketball players with quickness- not one dimensional guys.

This is the type of class I wish we had seen earlier.

I'm just trying to be balanced here, Howie, in the evaluation of Ben.

The record for 4 years- total failure.
His offense? Offensive to watch.
Defense - fair this year
Effort- very good
Roster for this year- very limited on talent and constructed poorly
Eeking out 7 or more Big Ten wins out of this squad- fairly impressive
Recruits coming in. I like them. A lot.

I hate where the program is at. I am trying to view this from the point of view of an AD that doesn't seem committed to big things in basketball. What will he do and why? I am not sure.

Decent recruiting class but certainly not program changing on its own. I don’t follow portal recruiting closely enough to know whether decent freshmen recruits are any incentive to draw upper classmen transfers. My guess is no. Even with the decent class we would still likely looking at a four or five win season next year.

As indicated by many this is a nice developmental program move, but developmental programs in Power 5 are extinct. Sadly, being a crappy program might actually become a draw for decent but not super freshmen who can show their skills to wealthier programs. It’s a grim future for the game.

I don’t place a whole lot of emphasis on stars or ratings, but I do look at who we beat out for the recruits we have coming in. It didn’t look to me like other than Jefferson that these incoming recruits had any big-time offers… Maybe I’m wrong??

You're not wrong.

This is a weak freshman class.

To compare to this year, Jefferson = Asuma, the other two = Grayson Grove. Except it will be harder for Jefferson to contribute as a freshman since he's a center.

Realistically, our 8 man rotation is Asuma at PG, Jefferson at back-up C, and 4 starters and 2 bench guys Ben has to get from the portal. I think Frank Mitchell might be able to to come back, if he wants to.

Agree about Jefferson. He seems like a breath of fresh air when it comes to our big men not named Dawson Garcia. Jacob Ross could have a Rigsby roll I think. Some sites have him as a 4 star recruit. He's athletic as hell. Shinholster will be a Grove type of season most likely.

I wouldn't be surprised if Mitchell comes back. Cochran too. Would be nice to see what he can do. Whole season was derailed and I'm sure he would love a chance to lead this team.

I think the lack of big time offers is partly from the changing recruiting tactics in the transfer portal era.

I agree with what you are saying. Here is a question going forward...with revenue sharing coming on board, could it be that the top conferences, and the Big Ten at the top of heap, can now actually develop and keep players again? It may well be possible.

Will certainly be interesting to see how revenue sharing changes things (if it does). Would be awesome if it put some stability back into rosters and slowed down the hopping from school to school that has become so common place in the current environment.

I got to meet Parker and Jacob at the UCLA game and you’re absolutely correct. Parker is a big kid. He’ll be ready to play next year in the Big Ten.

That is an interesting point in that it begs the question; Is that a actually a factor to be taken seriously or not. I could see that it might be, but then again, maybe not so much. I have no idea.

I have my doubts. My understanding is NIL is separate and that will still create haves and have not situation and create a highest bidder scenario. I think the only way to restore what we once knew as developmental programs would be some transfer restrictions.

Well, the emphasis over the last few years has been on recruiting older players, especially the fifth year ones. A couple of years back I read an article quoting a number of recruiting consultants who were talking about how fewer offers were going to their high school clients. There won't be nearly as many 5th year players left after this season (mostly just redshirts and players who missed all or most of a year with injuries) so I suspect things will improve for high schoolers.
