Per Randy:

A contrite Drake Lindsey addressed the Minnesota media on Tuesday for the first time since the Gophers quarterback’s May 1 arrest for underage drinking and possession of a fraudulent identification document in his hometown of Fayetteville, Ark. Lindsey, entering his second season as the Gophers’ starter, apologized to the administrations, coaches and teammates.

“As the leader of the football team, I understand I can’t make those decisions,” Lindsey said. “I’ve certainly grown a lot from them and learned a lot.”

Gophers coach P.J. Fleck said the program is handling Lindsey’s discipline internally and that it is ongoing. He would not say if Lindsey would miss any game time as part of any punishment.

“Drake’s just got to make better decisions, just like all the players on our team, take accountability for those decisions, learn from those decisions, and be better for it,” Fleck said. “… I know he’ll be way better for it, and he has been.”

Added linebacker Maverick Baranowski, “Drake’s a leader on this team. … We’ve all got his back.”

Go Gophers!!

How about letting him play only the first half of the opener against Eastern Illinois? That should be enough penance!

How about sitting him after the 1st quarter regardless and prepare a backup in case of an injury. Then everyone will be satisfied.

Like most, it's not a great look but it's a nothingburger

I'm sure most of us (including me) drank underage in college and even some of us (including me) got busted and ticketed

That could cause Drake irreparable harm though...

Over and done. We could be banking on a QB that gambled on his own team. Let's go!
For most of us this was pretty much over and done with after it happened. Bad look for Drake and the team but in the grand scheme of things not a massive deal.

The question is.....are Drake's comments enough for the small group trying to blow the whole thing out of proportion?

In Wisconsin you’re supposed to drink underage

There is no such group.

There was a very small group saying there should potentially be a multi-game suspension or some much more serious consequences for what Drake did.

It was definitely just a few posters acting like this was some major scandle but they were out there.

That was me. You're thinking of me. I said that Lindsay's behavior revealed a character issue that bothered me, and people on this board had a fit about that. They condescendingly lectured me about how underage drinking is normal and healthy, and at least 99% of college kids carry fake IDs.

And I was called arrogant for saying this:

On one hand, I'm sure that's true, to some degree. I am a realist.

But on the other hand, what I said is 100% true. Kids will live down to whatever standards you set for them. So set them high.

I can't blame you if you mistakenly thought we were arguing about multigame suspensions and forfeited scholarships, considering the way some people overreacted.

So are you OK with how Fleck is handling it?

He’s a leader and it shows.
Hard to tell who the leaders are on PJ’s teams. He anoints guys more than most coaches IMO but the team responds/goes to the best of its own drummer and may gravitate to non anointed ones. Ya hope your QB naturally is a leader but that’s not always the case.

Honestly it was 60's Guy who was the primary one acting like this was bigger than it was.

I certainly don't pass it off as nothing like some but have no issues with how Drake or Fleck have handled things to this point.

Exactly.

Is a full game or partial game suspension included under the umbrella of being handled "internally"? My guess is no.
Which still gets back to the question of if a suspension should even be in the mix for this. Most of us don't feel it should be so handling it internally is the way to go.

I have zero doubt that Drake has received discipline for what he did. That is good enough for me in a case involving underage drinking by a college student where nobody was injured and driving wasn't involved.

Drake knows he messed up, be accountable, learn from the mistake and more forward. By all accounts that is what is happening and as long as he keeps his nose clean going forward there is no reason not to believe him.

Can anyone imagine a bigger waste of police resources than enforcing underage drinking laws?

No. You can’t. But we’re not allowed to say that out loud for some reason.
