Gophers Practice Quotes: Cobb, Kill and Leidner Discuss Huskers and More
Compiled By Alex Van Abbema
Quotes from after practice on Wednesday.
Cobb:
Reaction to Doak Walker award snub, take it personally?
Haven’t seen it *laughs*. I mean of course not. As a competitor of course you want to be the best in your position but if we go out and handle business these next two games, I get to play both of them anyway. So you look at it more as an opportunity, that’s just how we are here.
Running the ball, what’s different than last year?
I think the biggest thing is the amount of people that’s helping, coming in and stepping in. We have young tight ends playing, receivers down here blocking. I mean our O-line has been doing a great job all year controlling the line of scrimmage, so it’s easy just to point out me, but there’s so many guys contributing. And when Mitch throws the ball good, we can have a great balance.
Playing last home game:
It was great. It was one of the few games my dad and my mom’s been able to come to together. It was just one of those feelings where you just want to go out with a bang. And I definitely wish we had the win, but it was great seeing some of my teammates parents and family come out that’s never been out here before and just sit through the cold. Just having my family there to support me and see them after the game and see them cheering is just one of those feelings I won’t forget.
On meeting Billy, having influence on him:
It means a lot when someone looks up to you. And when they see you their world just lights up when they go through things like that. I mean hats off to him because he’s tough, and he goes through a lot more than any of us out here. And he’s smiling and laughing and having a good time. So when we see that and what he goes through, how can we complain?
Leidner:
What is it like going into film after having an up and down game?
It’s looking at all the little things that we can learn from in that game. Even though there were some bad things at times, there were still a lot of good things that you can look at and move forward from. We were right there, we missed some opportunities, and we’ve got to take advantage of them down the road.
Living up to expectations of being in race for West:
Yeah that’s something Coach Kill talked to us about just yesterday. He was just like your goal, what you set before the season, you’re still right there. Nothing has changed, you’re still right there, and you have a great opportunity in front of you. Go and take it.
Coach Kill:
Progression of Jonah Prisig, how he held up against Bosa:
Bosa is his toughest test. He’s one of the better people who’ve we’ve played anyway when you watch his film. So it’s one of those things that I’ve thought Jonah, from the last, since he’s started playing he just keeps getting better and better and gaining more confidence. And he should have a whole lot of confidence after playing Ohio State and playing that kid. He held his own, and did a good job, and that kid is a great football player.
Who has improved the most on offensive line other than Jonah?
I would just tell them that the most underrated player on our offensive line is our center, Tommy Olson. Nobody really says anything about Tommy Olson. To me he’s a valuable piece right now that we could not lose, and I think he’s been playing at a high level. I wouldn’t trade him for anybody. From what he’s done from his freshman year to now, it’s unbelievable. He’s been unheralded.
Surprised that Cobb wasn’t on Walker list?
Yeah. But you know, that’s good motivation, that’s all I’ll tell you. What I will tell you is that it will highly motivate that young man. And he’s played good, and he’ll get rewarded. He just needs to keep playing well and playing hard. We’ve been blessed, we’ve all had good backs and they’ve all been a little bit different. But when you talk about somebody who’s improved over the four years, out of the kids that I’ve had at the position I’ve never seen anyone get better as he has. Better than he was last year by a long shot.
Kill also said that he’s shortened practice because of the tough physical tests his team has faced in the past few weeks.
