Gophers' Malcolm Robinson to transfer

Someone on here will say this is related to COVID season cancellation, but I'd almost certainly guarantee this was already in motion due to lack of opportunity. He has been around a while and hasn't played much - if at all - yet. And now we have a ton of young talent coming up on the DL. Can't blame him for taking his degree and looking elsewhere for some playing time.

It’s absolutely Covid related. He would have been on the team this fall if there was a season.

This is not an NFL-level player transferring because the Big Ten isn't playing. He already said he is graduating and he has two seasons left to play. He knows he is not going to play on the DL for the Gophers. Sure, he may have stayed on the team for the fall season while he completed his degree. With no fall season, he is going to grad transfer and play 2 years elsewhere. But either way, he was going to grad transfer.

At the bottom line, you're still wrong though. Because you said we'd be losing NFL-quality guys who were going to transfer to play THIS FALL elsewhere. Robinson is not playing somewhere else this fall; he is finishing his degree and then transferring to play 2 years where he might see the field.

So at the end of the day, not a player who was contributing in games and not a player who is transferring to play somewhere this fall. Malcolm is clearly smart and sees that he can finish his degree at the U AND also go somewhere to play with 2 years left.

Here is a player who gave his best even though he wasn't able to crack the starting lineup. Whether he saw the playing field or not, he contributed to the team in many ways. He has secured a promising future with his degree and a chance to go to graduate school and play elsewhere. This is what Gopher Football is all about. Molding young kids into fine young men. A majority of the players are not NFL bound.

Congratulations and Good Luck Malcolm!

Despite JG's lazy lie (didn't even bother to throw out an argument why), we know the facts: Robinson was the only scholarship player from his class, still on the team, that didn't see any meaningful action in his first three years. And here is his 2019 roster bio to prove it: https://gophersports.com/sports/football/roster/malcolm-robinson/16399

Quite obviously, something just didn't click for him here. And that's just fine. That will happen sometimes.

My wild speculation is that PJ told him something like the following, after the 2019 season: you're welcome to stay on the team, and we will continue to honor your scholarship, but you'll never be a contributor on the field here and you'll be passed up on the depth chart by younger guys. If you want to play and be a competitor on the field, before your eligibility runs out, we will support your and do everything we can for you to earn your degree so you can grad transfer anywhere you want.

I wish him well at his new school! Also very sorry to hear about his grandmother.

On the team, but is there any reason to think he would start?

I gotta think a senior guy who hasn't started yet ... probably not going to outside of injuries... or if we feel the younger guys are just really struggling (man I hope that's not the case).

Either way best of luck to him and I hope everything works out great for him.
