gophers lose db commit antoine lewis

That's stupid. Maybe RobD Lewis still wants to come here.

At least we havent lost Huff YET!!

I always got the impression he was one of our iffier commits. Good luck to him at Purdue.

It was always just a matter of when with this guy. To me, it seemed he clearly committed because he had no better offers and wanted to hold his place. No big loss.

I should have expanded my comments more, but I got the same impression from his statements when he commited last summer. I think some guys commit to somewhere just to slow down the mailman a bit. It puts them a bit more in control of their recruitment.

Robdonovan Lewis or Brock Vereen are comparable players so one may end up here in Antoine Lewis' spot.

i would much rather have either of those two to begin with. antoine lewis has always been a soft verbal to us and i think it was even mentioned to the coaching staff that he was going to be taking visits. good luck to him. now hopefully the real lewis will commit to us

I think some of these guys committ early to increase it. Those that aren't getting all that much interest, committ to the first school to offer. Other schools on the fence notice, and begin to wonder "do we need to take a closer look at this guy?"

A prime example is the kid from Wisconsin (Zagrebski (sp?)?). MN offers, he accepts, and almost immediately thereafter WI offers and he decommits.

Lots of gamesmanship involved.

I think loosing an outstanding kicker is the bigger blow, but let us hope that this doesn't herald some type of exodus.

That is the flip-side of my argument, but I think we're saying the same thing. It actually gives the kid greater control of the process (at least in my view). I thought the about Zabgrebski when I saw this and although the circumstances were different, he used the early commit to get where he likely wanted to go all along.

I don't think Lewis had a definite destination in mind, unlike Zagrebski who I agree with you may have (I think that's what you are saying), but after his commit to us, he was in a position to put out feelers as opposed to the other way around.

One thing I notice about Lewis is that he's listed as a WR at ESPN. He's also a highly-regarded return specialist. He hasn't shown up on the Purdue campus yet so we don't know what they are going to do with him, but I wonder if he wanted to play WR more than DB.

From the kid's standpoint, how can you argue with his strategy for selecting a school?

By going about his recruitment in this fashion, he ensures he doesn't wind up on the outside looking in, a la Fritz Rock.
