So after 2 exhibition games, what do you think the opening night starting lineup will be? Obviously Austin and Andre are locks to start. After that it boils down to either Mathieu or Malik, Joey or Oto, and EE or not so big Mo. This would be my preffered lineup:

Mathieu
Dre
Austin
King
Mo

What say you.

EE has proven he can play against the big boys, Not So Huge Mo hasn't.

I would guess Elliot instead of Mo. But the total minutes will be evenly split and who finishes the game will depend on who plays better that night.

I would agree that Elliot would probably start instead of Mo. However, if Mo continues to play at the level that he did tonight.....objects in mirror are closer than they appear.

......................./who is less gassed/who isn't in foul trouble.

King has outplayed Oto in the two exhibition games by a fairly wide margin. Mo has played slightly better than Elliott. I think King starts Friday night along with Elliott. Mo may move into the starting lineup if he continues to play well.

After a shaky start, I thought Oto was okay tonight. I sure am glad King is playing, but we're going to need Oto to contribute as thin as we are up front. He got some rebounds, a couple of baskets in close, and he made at least one, maybe two nice passes that led to easy baskets. Don't know enough to assess his defense, but I don't recall him getting burned. Missed badly on an open three though.

Joey King is fun to watch. Very active but he needs to get stronger. He did start the second half. Mo was pretty active but I wish he would keep the ball up when he has it underneath. Got stripped several times.

I thought Oto had a better game tonight, more consistant, made a few shots, rebounded, I'm not sold on King, I still think Oto has a better overall game.

Yikes. We're in trouble at power forward.

Is that you, Common????

Think it'll be the same as the exhibitions. Only change might be King for Oto.

Nice to see Oto play better. Really pulling for him. Gonna' need him, I think, and somehow he has to develop some confidence. Good to see a couple shots go in the bucket for him last night.

Oto will start Friday night along with the other exhibition game starters. King is better coming off the bench. He doesn't lack confidence. Oto needs to start to gain confidence.

The boys Pitino brought in have clearly gotten more opportunities than they deserve, and are touching the ball way too much. They are not Big Ten athletes and it is obvious during the scrimmage. Andre needs to run point. I don't even know if I can watch once the Big Ten begins. Just like a car crash I have to look away.

Goldiegirl, you have been quite critical of the previous staff and now this staff. Can you please expand upon your thoughts? Who is not a Big Ten "athlete"? Is Buggs a Big Ten athlete? If so, what have you seen from him that would be deserving of minutes over Joey King? McNeil isn't "clearly getting more opportunities" is he? Dre Mathieu seems like he's a solid option at PG. What have you seen that would show us that he's getting more PT than he deserves? Wally is starting to get more PT so that's encouraging as he is getting more than Tubby gave him and Wally isn't one of the "boys Pitino brought in."

It's easy to offer criticism. I like your passion, so I'd like to see your solutions, outside of just Andre needing to run point.

Thanks.

Go Gophers!!

Why not let guys like Smith, Mo, Oto, and Mathieu start on Friday? The game is against a beatable opponent and it will give them all a chance to get some jitters out of the way before more difficult games come up. Lets face it we will need all 4 of them to contribute this year and we know Austin and Andre are going to be studs. Obviously all will play in the game but its one thing to start when the crowd is rocking and another to come in when we already are up 10 or more.

I think Mathieu has solidified himself as a lock start at this point, along with Dre and Austin obviously. I think EE and Oto will probably get the nod because they have a lot more B1G experience than Mo and King.

Don't sleep on Lehigh.

Most of the game it was very close, EE played 12 minutes, Mo played 24. I don't care who starts, care who's on the court the bulk of the game and when it counts down the stretch.

I haven't seen any games personally so I have no idea. From what I have read Mathieu has been better than I expected. Also thought Smith would be more of a force, but he is also finding his place on the court with two very good guards in the Hollins boys.

Oto is the better all round player right now. King has more potential but has to put it all together still & will likely start when that finally happens. Basketball is much more than just shooting the ball though. I don't want to plagiarize Ryan James from GopherIluustrated.Com but in essence he posted today (in response to an incredulous poster) that Oto does all the little things that win basketball games that fans don't see, but coaches do. Spacing, movement, hustle, defensive positioning, setting hard screens, fighting through screens, boxing out, moving his feet, etc. If Oto misses 4 shots but does everything else right it's worth a lot more than another player making a few shots but screwing up the little things that fans don't notice.

Would you rather have a player that scores 16 ppg & let's his opponent score 20 ppg, or a guy who scores 8 ppg & let's his opponent score 6 ppg? This is the King vs Oto debate in a nutshell.

I worry about Kings speed/defense when we starting playing quality teams. I give Oto the edge.

He'll be a nice player to come in for short spells when Reid is tired next year!
