Gophers in the portal

Will be cheering for Brady every time he steps on the field. And wishing he were still here.
Every time except if the Gophers and TT meet in a bowl game. Then the cheering will stop. :p When he makes a great play or two the cheers will be nearly silent and we will all be wishing he was on our side again.

I like this, good post GFBfan.

PJ’s history throwing the ball at WM and at the Gophers with Ciarocca was much more balanced than during the two aberrational years with Sanford. There is no doubt in my mind that with Ciarocca back we will have a more balanced attack, will attack overloaded boxes with quick passes and will take more down field shots to loosen bunched defenses. We have way too much receiver talent to intentionally run a service academy offense. Maybe Fleck can convince Boyd that the uni-dimensional offense of 2021 was indeed an aberration and that Boyd should stay the course. I think that with time Boyd will succeed anywhere he plays. Hoping PJ can talk him back into the fold with his friends and teammates.
I wound rather see PJ re-recruit Boyd than try to find some portal replacement.
I was curious about the actual numbers so I compiled a rush/pass % spreadsheet. Obviously a better metric would be neutral script/situation ratios but I don't have those.

Takeaways: Lowest ratio was his 1-11 first season with WMU. 2021 was the exact same as 2017, Fleck's first in MN. Seems like low 60's for a rush rate is PJ's preference. Hope we return to that.

I didn't include them on this, but Zach Terrell was a 4 year starter in that time and so was Tanner Morgan. Terrell's accuracy went from the low 50's as a freshman to the high 60's as an upperclassman. Morgan progressed from high 50's to high 60's, then regressed to the 50's when Sanford took over. Hopefully that gets fixed.

By all measures, 2021 is an outlier in terms of ratio.

I didn't actually realize that he was still on the team and that he had that much eligibility left
He did a medical withdrawal from the team, about a year ago. Here's a blurb from February...

Minnesota's also going through some change in the specialist room as their two scholarship kickers in Michael Lantz and Grant Ryerse won't be back for the 2021 season. Ryerse will graduate here soon and move onto his career and Lantz is medically retiring after back issues flared up during his time as a Gopher.

I wonder if Minnesota will add a QB this transfer cycle.

If I were a young QB with multiple years left to play I would look very strongly at Minnesota. Look beyond Tanner Morgan who has one year left. The rest of the QB room consists of a guy who's only run wildcat formations and a freshman who's never thrown a college pass. No dig on Athan at all but we don't know what he's got yet.

A guy with a little patience could get multiple starting seasons on a good Big Ten team. But since patience is dead everyone is looking for immediate starter or bust in the portal.

For me, when I read the tea leaves, I think it's pretty clear that Athan is next in line. I don't believe our staff would really want to muck up the depth chart by bringing someone in who will likely be behind Athan.

I hope you are right. Has anyone heard anything solid on his progress or just watching the post-season roster movement?

No, they are pretty quiet and I could be wrong. It just would be pretty illogical for both ZA and Clark to leave otherwise.

Wow, took a while. Anyone remember when he entered the portal?
Not even sure he ever even entered the portal formally. I think he just kind of withdrew from the team at some point a while ago. Maybe it was in the 2021 portal???

Or they were tired of being in their 5th and 4th year of college without playing and with Tanner coming back that wasn't going to change? If we want to argue logic...

I guess they should have beat him out then, eh?

Gawd, with transfers and annual number changes from players, I’m gonna spend more time looking at the roster on my phone than the scrimmage.

You've got a priapism for PJ and it's funny to watch. I hope you don't mind walking around with that tent pitched for many years.
I'm curious what causes you to think that? Rather crude too, right? Good grief.

I feel PJ is the best thing to happen to Minnesota in my football lifetime. I think there is a lot of good being done with the football program. I like the Gophers winning. I don't agree with all things Fleck. Not everyone does. I feel there are finite chances a team like the Gophers have to win the B1G West. I feel winning the West propels us over Iowa and Becky for recruiting so that we start competing against the East for the B1G title and the Rose Bowl.

This was one of those years. I think Fleck is really great but I hope he gets a whole lot better.

Is assuming typically one of your stronger points? You seem really confident in your accusation but couldn't be further from the reality.

Clark could’ve had two years after Morgan leaves correct? Maybe he thought Athan passed him. Used to be pretty common for QBs to wait til they were juniors or seniors to get a shot to start. Now many want to start early so they can skip their junior and senior years.
