Gophers in the portal

If he wants to go somewhere that throws the ball more, maybe that is that.

Maybe he sold himself on the idea that PJ was a wideout in the League and this would be a great place to come learn how to be a league level wideout?

Wild guessing
PJ’s history throwing the ball at WM and at the Gophers with Ciarocca was much more balanced than during the two aberrational years with Sanford. There is no doubt in my mind that with Ciarocca back we will have a more balanced attack, will attack overloaded boxes with quick passes and will take more down field shots to loosen bunched defenses. We have way too much receiver talent to intentionally run a service academy offense. Maybe Fleck can convince Boyd that the uni-dimensional offense of 2021 was indeed an aberration and that Boyd should stay the course. I think that with time Boyd will succeed anywhere he plays. Hoping PJ can talk him back into the fold with his friends and teammates.
I wound rather see PJ re-recruit Boyd than try to find some portal replacement.

I think your comments about the offense being more WR-friendly are on point. However, two counter points to consider:

1. While Brady's concerns could have been about the offense, it's probably equally plausible that he knew CAB was coming back when he announced his portal decision and he saw himself the way it was the last half of the season: 5th on the WR depth chart without a direct path to a lot of playing time (also with 3 of the guys ahead of him with 2-3 years left of eligibility).

2. It seems like you're brushing off the transfer portal possibility a bit too quickly. PJ has done quite well with transfers overall, but I think he knocked it out of the park last offseason specifically (first one under the new rules). Also, I'd guess most of our fans see more upside with Wright (who came from the portal) at WR than Boyd (no knock on Brady, but Wright has a rare blend of size and athleticism).

Wright will get there.

And he will be a standout, like he was for the Ohio State game.

If we go back to the 2019 offense, there will be 3 WRs on the field on most plays, with the slot requiring a somewhat different skill set than the outside WRs. Wright is certainly talented, but there is the question of where he (and every other WR on the roster besides Autman-Bell) fit in Ciarocca system. That's what makes me a bit uneasy about Boyd's leaving. His redshirt was wasted this year, but it would be nice to have someone with his physicals sticking around.

I'm not disagreeing about Boyd. I'm just not certain that PJ can't upgrade in the transfer portal.

Don’t disagree with your points; maybe Boyd wants to go some place with less competition for a starting spot. But Boyd, as a true frosh running at no 5, already saw the field a lot in 2021 in normal rotation; we just didn’t throw to him much (Sanford?). Injuries have a way of elevating one on the depth chart, too. I look at Boyd as having leapfrogged 4 or 5 scholarship WRs who are senior to him chronologically. That is a very positive sign, I would think.

Or more so Texas Tech fan fiction, since that’s where the rumor started.
The truth is that if you look at the depth charts of Texas Tech and UT, it's hard to see that Boyd saw a clear path to PT at either location. I will give those sewing circles this bit of kudos, they were calling for Boyd entering the portal early. I dismissed it because I was incorrect about the number of years Boyd played with Ewers but also because of the depth charts at those schools. But I was clearly wrong.

I'll be interested to see where he ends up. Maybe he has second thoughts? Rumors are that he commits to UT in the next 2-3 days.

Boyd to Texas Tech. Too bad, but if that’s where he wants to be, so be it. I wonder if PJ has an experienced WR in the portal he’s been talking to? Lot of unknowns behind our four experienced WRs.

You're worried that we might not have depth behind our top four wide receivers?

You are aware of our run/pass ratio, yes?

I’m aware of our aberrational, run/pass ratio in the two years Sanford was PJ’s O/C; and I am aware of the different, more balanced run/pass ratio during the five years before that in which Ciarocca was PJ’s OC. Apples and oranges. If Sanford were still OC I wouldn’t be worried about depth at WR. But with Ciarocca back, the run pass ratio will normalize and WR depth is one of the concerns that a sapient balanced team should have (at any position, actually). Look, we were using 5 WRs with Sanford as OC; hard to believe Ciarocca will use fewer.

We will still be pretty run heavy. KC never really used that many wrs during his first stint here. There’s plenty of guys that have been on the team several years that should be able to step in. Wouldn’t be shocked if Hoskins gets some looks early too.

But but but ... Ewers!! He and Boyd were ride or die together, right????

Fan. Fiction.
Obviously must not have been the goal of either, but you’re naive if you think they couldn’t have made it happen somewhere if that’s what they wanted to do.

Thanks for visiting. Wish it would have worked out for Brady to stay here.
Yes Sir, but sometimes it just doesn't happen. I have certainly enjoyed this past year posting on this board. I have interacted with some really nice and friendly people. From what I saw when I visted is Minneapolis is a beautiful city. I love the weather you have there.

Wishing Brady the best - hopefully his dreams come true! Also hoping we can get at least 2 of our current Gopher receivers to the NFL! 😁

Thank you Sir, I don't think the Gophers will have any trouble getting 2 or maybe three receivers
to the NFL. I would like to wish all the posters on this board a Merry Christmas. Row The Boat.

Boyd was never going to Texas, never even consider it.
That's what I know, not what I heard. Good luck to the Gophers
in their bowl game vs West Virginia.
Good luck to Brady at TT. I was one who was disappointed to hear of his transferring because I believe he will be a very productive receiver. Too bad it didn't work out for him here. Thanks for coming here, posting, and sharing your insight Dragon21.

GopherPete, thank you Sir, it has been a pleasure. Along with many others that post here I consider Y'all the Good Guys. I think Brady will do well and be productive.

I do too, was hoping here, but I'm not going to fault a 19 year old man for doing what he feels best for him. Wish him all the luck!
