Now, Smith returns for his sixth season and Brooks is back for his fifth. If they replicate their game-breaking ways, Ibrahim could see his role diminish this fall.

Fleck prescribes to former Gophers coach Glen Mason’s adopted theory that running backs are best when they come as “a pair and a spare.”

The initial pair in 2019 could be Ibrahim and Smith, who were two of the 71 players named to the watch list for the Doak Walker Award, which will be given to the best running back in the nation in December. Brooks has been further behind in his rehab after tearing his second ACL last October; he suffered the first injury in winter workouts in early 2018.

The Gophers are one of eight programs with two players on the Doak Walker watch list, joining an surprising list that ranges from prominent programs to Group of Five schools: Notre Dame, Oregon, Arkansas, Duke, Georgia Tech, Tulsa and Louisiana.

This season, the Gophers will face six rushers also on the Doak Walker watch list: Illinois’ Reggie Corbin, Northwestern’s Isaiah Bowser, Fresno State’s Ronnie Rivers, Iowa’s Mekhi Sargent, Maryland’s Anthony McFarland, Jr., and Taylor.
