Gophers currently 360th out of 364 in D1 team FT

Fox’s free throws are fastballs!
At least last night his fastballs were strikes for the most part.....can't say the same for our "good" free throw shooters M. Mitchell and Garcia who went a combined 2-9 from the line yesterday.

Really is amazing how bad Johnson's teams have been from the free throw line.

While a big part of last night's problem was from the guys who are the team's best FT shooters (Garcia, Patterson & Mitchell), the overall issue on poor percentage stems from recruiting a lot of guys who simply cannot shoot free throws. I'm not suggesting you shouldn't recruit these players, but you cannot be surprised the team sucks at shooting FTs when you bring them in.

Yeah, we saw that with Payne as well last year where one/two bad free throw shooters shooting a decent number of them can really tank your percentages.

I always find it shocking the number of D1 basketball players that can't shoot free throws. I get it a little bit with the really big guys but you would think a shot that doesn't change from the youth level all the way the pro ranks would be one that high level basketball players could make consistently.

Obviously fatigue plays into it but so much of free throw shooting is just doing the same thing everytime.

Yep. Bad recruiting. Furthermore, if you have recruited a bunch of guys who can't shoot free throws- it is almost a certainty that they are also poor shooters from the field. Guys like this would almost never show up on a Wisconsin roster, for example. To have a guy, like Payne for example, that you need for a specific role, okay. But half of your planned rotation? Malpractice.

Another oddity? They have all gotten worse at it during their time here.

The entire mentality of Johnson teams is playing afraid. Afraid to lose. When you play not to lose, you are not at your best.

All four managed to somehow regress under Johnson.

I think most of us that have played basketball at any level could walk out to our frozen driveways and drop at least 5 of 10 free throws right now. Don't most high school teams shoot well above 60%?

Posted this in the D3 thread but this is worth repeating:

D3 basketball:
St Olaf free throw percentage .669
St Olaf opponents free throw percentage .710
St Olaf Women's team free throw percentage .685
Gopher free throw percentage .618

So don't hire

FT shooting In a battle with Gophers non-conference SOS ranking (currently #353) for which will finish worse.

The good news is we don't have to worry about the Gophers non-conference schedule finishing last (#364) like it did last season. Not with the non-conference schedule Marist (currently #364) played:

@ Harvard (280)
@ Richmond (254)
Army (293)
Dartmouth (279)
New Hampshire (361)
@ Lehigh (266)
@ Stony Brook (339)
UMBC (257)
Binghamton (287)

To the Red Foexs' credit, at least they're leading the MAAC (4-0).

Sometimes you have to get worse before you get better. Embrace the suck. Ben believes strongly in this. Look at how many FT's Parker Fox made last night. Imagine where he might be in a couple more years.

The stalling with the seven point lead with 8 minutes left said a lot. Didn't he learn his lesson against Mizzou last year doing that??

Went to the game last night. There was a kid who was cheering for Ohio State in front of us. Anytime the Gophers would shoot a free throw it would be a dead silence and then the kid would shout out and the players would freeze and miss the shot. Parker Fox finally hit a pair of free throws and afterwards he would clap his hands and gaze towards the kid. It was tough to watch.

It was audible on the FS1 broadcast.

AND, especially important if you want to play at a controlled pace and limit possessions...IS free throw shooting! The games when things go well will be close. Free throw shooting will be amplified.

Obnoxious. That said.....a D1 basketball player shouldn't be affected by something like this.

Cincinnati at #348 on free throw list is/was #16 in the country. But, they lost a couple recently because they can't shoot free throws probably? But still, there is a team that was winning shooting horribly from the line. Just surprised me.

They only have two opponents ranked in the 300s. We had four or five last season.
