Marshall: Why It Works

Marshall is working his way up the coaching ladder - he led Winthrop to seven NCAA bids and compiled a 104-24 record there and is now doing a similar job at Wichita State where his team won the NIT two years ago, NCAA tourney last year and advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament this year.

Marshall will get a major conference job soon, and if his career is any indication, he'll be successful. Why not at Minnesota?

Marshall: Why It Doesn't Work

There are no natural ties to Marshall/Ellis/Teague. While not a dead end, both Teague and Ellis are well connected and will likley hire someone they already know.

Marshall will have options at high major programs - will the lack of facilities be a turn off for a coach who can be picky if he chooses?

Kansas is crazy about basketball. Three teams in. Two left. The Missouri Valley Conference does not get the pub, but they play great basketball. Good enough to beat the number one team, number one overall seed. Ties to the region, ties to Teague and Ellis, Marshall can flat out coach. His only draw back to my mind? He is still in the Tourney.

Yeah, I would be really excited by this hire. He has shown that he can improve a program.

The MVC will also drop off a lot with Creighton leaving for the Big East.

I don't think this is the guy. If it is true that someone was interviewed in Minnesota today, it wasn't Marshall. Don't think he would be in Minnesota interviewing for a job when he has a game tomorrow in the Sweet 16.

This is the guy.

Agree. This is a very impressive coach. Sort of a stealthy, under the radar type who clearly doesn't possess that 'rock star' cachet like a Shaka Smart or Brad Stevens, but all this coach does is win and win and win while running clean programs, and I personally would be thrilled to death to see us hire this guy.

Thought this should be back on the first page. Sounds like he would be a good hire.

Great long term hire if the Shockers get bounced out then press conference Monday. No press conference and buzz is still playing then that's the guy.

Marshall turned down several BCS jobs in the past, including N.C. State. Why would he come to Minnesota? He's in the same tier of unlikely candidates as Shaka and Stevens.

The one thing I really like about him is that he's won in both head coaching jobs and his teams get progressively better every year.
I think this would be a great hire, just not sure if he has interest.

There are those who look at things the way they are, and ask why... I dream of things that never were, and ask why not?
Senator Robert F. Kennedy

I have always been a fan of his since his days at Winthrop. Shocked that he did not get the job at South Carolina; but I heard that was internal issues that prevented him from getting the job. I figured Shaka was always a long shot, but Marshall is really more responsible. What he has done this season is pretty impressive.

This would be a god hire, IMO. Young enough, has experience and has climbed the ladder. Hard to believe a "better" program would not offer him, but if MN wants him they should pay him enough to make it a no doubter.

There are circumstances with Marshall that would make me believe he's a realistic possibility. But, I hate coaching carousel speculation and rumors... so enough on that - let's get to a fact: Buzz isn't a realistic possibility.

Nonetheless, you should still watch him & the Marquette Warriors in about an hour!

If Marshall was available I have to think UCLA would have waited to talk to him. Way better choice than Alford in my view.

I've been skeptical of Marshall, never really having seen his team or knowing much about him.

I hate to make a judgement on one game, but his team and he is impressive. I am sold. Would love this hire.

It just dawned on me.
Gregg Marshall is the guy.
Book it...

I'm afraid Marshall is quickly elevating himself and his program beyond our range, see Shaka Smart and Brad Stevens

I'm calling it right now. Duke will fire Coach K after losing to Louisville, and Marshall is next in line for the Duke Dynasty.

Final Four...agree with other posters he just took himself out of MN's league...

Is this why we offered Flip (I know we offered before Marshall made it to the final four)? Knowing Marshall wasn't going anywhere after such a successful season? Either that or the cute idea that it was all a smoke screen.

Flip still could have been a compelling hire - still could be - but he has to be flexible too. The U has real issues - college game issues - he has to be sensitive to those. Have an answer to those issues - like recruiting. And not just say here are my terms, my people all or nothing. Then Norwood has to be open to various ways to get both sides on the same wavelength. An actionable plan both are comfortable with.

Doesn't sound like that happened or even got close.
