Buzz: Why It Works

Buzz has done a great job at Marquette and no doubt brings instant credibility to the Gophers program.

Buzz is an alum of the Villa 7 program that Mike Ellis has been instrumental in leading.

Buzz was recently a guest on Norwood Teague's radio show on 1500 ESPN. While that doesn't mean much, it does show that Teague and Buzz have a good relationship, and if he was willing to jump on a radio show during the season, he'll likely at least take Teague's call should he place one.

Buzz: Why It Doesn't Work

Buzz is in a great program and has no need to leave Marqutte. He's well compensated and well respected at Marquette so it would probably surprise a lot of people if he made a move to Minnesota.

Many coaches like being the only major sport at a school, and Buzz has that at Marquette. He's the big guy in the athletic department and that is appealing to a lot of coaches.

Buzz Williams leaving Marquette to go to Minnesota would be taking a step backward in his career. There is no way he would come to Minnesota. Marquette is a great program.

I think that whoever comes here, folks will be very surprised. Either for the perception that you mentioned or because folks thought better options exist for our potential coach (UCLA). I think we will suprise many folks.

Come on, that is a laughable statement. Yes, Marquette has had some success both recently and historically, but so has Minnesota and there is no comparison between the schools overall. Minnesota is one of 12 members of the best, most influential and by far the largest conference in the country, w a huge alumni base, in a major media market, the ONLY D-1 school in a state that produces a lot of them.

Marquette is a nice program in a school many in the gen public have never heard of, small national alumni base, unstable conference, etc. etc. As much as I dislike Wisconsin, I have no problem saying Marquette isn't even close to the most important school or basketball program in its own state.

Maybe he's not a candidate but to say it's a step backward is ridiculous.

Same with Jay Wright at Villanova and others at similar non-"helmet school" schools.

Put me down as saying Buzz would be my #1 choice.

The local media would HATE him.

The fans would LOVE him.

He would win.

100% correct. He has a $2.5 million buyout and he is currently the 7th highest paid coach in college basketball.

He has made 3 straight Sweet 16's and has a top 10 or higher recruiting class coming in next year.

Marquette also spends the 4th highest amount of dollars on its basketball program in all of college basketball behind only Duke, Louisville and Kentucky.

I could go on about facilities and more but why?

Yeah, as a Marquette fan, I would be utterly shocked if he took the Minnesota job.

As a Minnesota fan I'd be shocked lol

He actually spoke to my Marquette law school class last spring, it was pretty much a summary of how he got to where he was and why he doesn't have an agent. He named a few of the jobs that he could have left for and hinted at what they offered. I think he's at Marquette for the long haul or at least until a true blue blood comes calling.

I am guessing Texas A & M, SMU and maybe Illinois?

If he goes anywhere he might take the Texas job in the future but as he says "Don't mess with happy".

After they lost to ND in the Big East Tourney he flew to Memphis to see recruit JaJuan Johnson play for the state championship and then to New Mexico to see recruit Dawson play for the state championship. Has a private plane at his disposal 24/7. Flying back and forth across the country to see recruits play doesn't sound like a coach who is planning on looking for another job.

He hinted that SMU was the school that offered him the chance to be paid 2nd most in the country but they have horrible facilities and support.

Star Tribune columnist @chipscoggins tells @1500ESPN that his gut is that #Gophers will get Buzz Williams.

Weird, I guess I don't get it, why he'd leave Marquette for here?

Minneapolis is much better city than Milwaukee...people forget about this aspect. If I think about MY life and career, I would take a substantially less attractive offer in Minneapolis than anywhere in the South simply based on quality of life. I'm not arguing which job is "better" or if he'll come here, but maybe he values WHERE he'll live for the foreseeable future. Seattle and Portland are about the only two cities I'd ever leave Minneapolis for.

Funny my wife and I have said the same thing, Seattle and Portland would be tops with consideration to Denver. I did visit Milwaukee for the first time a couple years ago, amazed by how small it was but dowtown was really nice along Lake Michigan.

The twin cities area is definitely nicer than Milwaukee, but Milwaukee gets major bonus points for proximity to both Chicago and Madison.

The Gophers should tell Buzz that if he comes here, we'll name the arena after him.

Sure am glad Rodney graduated! Can you imagine the national media with all the Rodney and his father Buzz talk, to go along with the Hollins bros?

Holy wow. Almost a fourth of the people would be upset with him as the hire? Lol. People have way too high of expectations- this would be close to a homerun.

I totally agree. My 2 choices would be flip or buzz. He has been a winner at Marquette ever since he has been there.
