Grant: Why It Works

Teague hired Grant as head coach at VCU, after Grant had been an assistant at Florida. Teague has been quick to point out the hiring and career progression of Grant in interviews.

Grant is a Villa 7 alum.

Grant has done a solid, albeit not spectacular, job as head coach at Alabama.

Grant: Why It Doesn't Work

Almost all of Grant's career has been in the South and coming to the Big Ten and recruiting Minnesota would be new to him.

Grant has done a solid job at Alabama, but probably wouldn't immediately fire up the fan base.

I like him as a coach, but I'm not sure I like him as a fit here in Minnesota.

I wouldn't mind him if he was the 4th or 5th option. I have no doubt he is probably a solid coach but Minnesota fans are not going to be thrilled from the get go with the headline. Gophers hire Grant!!!!

I don't think he is the splash higher that Teague is looking for. So I would him at #4 or #5 on the list.

When did Teague sat he was making a "splash hire" I remember him saying he would get the "right fit"

For the amount of money it would take to pry him loose, it's not worth it.

Not a fan of Grant to the Gophers. Mark Gottfried did better in Tuscaloosa, eventually they fired him because his teams "underachieved" even though they made the S16/E8. In four years, Grant hasn't won a single NCAA tourney game (only 1 NCAA appearance at Bama) and also hasn't won the SEC or anything like that. Grant is probably a few years from being on the hot seat himself. He also has a slow tempo and no track record of putting guys in the league, so it's going to be hard for him to recruit really well at Minnesota. Again, don't like the idea of Grant to the Gophers. It's not that hard to recruit talent to Alabama. One NCAA appearance and 0 wins in the tourney in four years is nothing to aspire to hire.

Anythony Grant beat Duke in the tournament as an 11 seed did he not? Granted this was with VCU. But he does have a tourney win.

Grant's season just ended tonight with a 1 point NIT loss to Maryland.

Go Gophers!!

He'd be 5th or 6th on my list. Even though he wouldn't excite the fan base like some other candidates would he would be an underrated hire. Unlike Smart, Grant actually won his conference in the regular season 3 years in a row at VCU. He's also been to a couple Final 4's and won a national championship as an assistant at Florida. Prior to his arrival in Alabama the Tide had not won over 7 games in 3 straight years. He's been over .500 in conference for 3 straight years including two 12 win seasons.

No thanks.

Here's what the Bleacher report says on him:

"Upon taking the Alabama head-coaching job in 2009, he compiled outstanding recruiting classes, including a massive nationwide 2011 class headlined by Trevor Lacey, Rodney Cooper, Moussa Gueye and Nick Jacobs.

Underachieving teams with poor offensive execution have unfortunately marred his resume and clouded future openings, but the players' coach with excellent connections would energize a tired fanbase and help land some local talent."

I don't think I can handle sseveral more years of poor offensive execution.

Here's Grant's offense this past year:

63 ppg (275th)
10.6 assists (308th)
.43 FG% (194th)

Here's the juggernaut Gopher offense under Tubby

68.4 ppg (149th)
14.8 assists (50th)
44.2 fg% (118th)

When did Teague sat he was making a "splash hire" I remember him saying he would get the "right fit"

Good morning Rashad, Tyus and Reid. Please welcome our new coach whose offense makes Tubby's look like a Paul Westhead disciple. Great fit.

Gottfried did have a good start at Bama but the program did more than underachieve, they were TERRIBLE when he got fired.

They were 20-30 in the SEC in Gottfried's last 3 seasons (fired in the middle of the 3rd).

They were in the dumps. They were in the dumps at about the same level MN was in the dumps when we hired Tubby. The three previous seasons under Monson we were 18-29 in the Big 10.

Grant improved the team to going 39-27 in conference.

If going from .400 to .590 winning percentage in conference isn't an improvement, I don't know what it.

Signed through 2019@ 1.9 Million a year.... will need 250,000+ bump state income tax plus a raise and a very longterm contract with HUGE buyout$$$$ to make the move.....

I hope this is Grant's asking price. If so, there is NO chance he ends up here. Thank God.

Not a damned one of us knows if this is the right guy or not. If Woody does not hire your "personal favorite", when in fact none of you even knew who Grant was until now, Woody will fail.

Teague is not gonna hire someone just to hire someone. He has done this before, successfully I might add, and will do it again. Will this decision bring us our "Resurrection"? Welcome to the Twilight Zone.
