Yeah, there used to be a time when nonconference schedules had more name recognition. These days it is all about trying to squeeze dollars out of season ticket holders and get as many home games against crap teams as you can. Some of these athletic departments act like they have shareholders to please with their efforts to maximize revenue from ticket sales of certain sports.
