Gophers Announce 2011 Non-Conference Basketball Schedule

The University of Minnesota men's basketball program announced its 2011 non-conference schedule today. The schedule includes 13 games, 10 of which will be played at Williams Arena. The entire 2011-12 schedule with game times and television rights will be released at a later date.

The Golden Gophers open the regular season with four-straight games at Williams Arena, beginning with a matchup against Bucknell on Fri., Nov. 11. Minnesota will also play host to either North Dakota or South Dakota State (Nov. 14), Fairfield (Nov. 17) and Mount St. Mary’s (Nov. 21) prior to its only road trip of the non-conference slate as part of the Old Spice Classic in Orlando, Fla.

Both Bucknell and Fairfield reached the post-season in 2010-11. The Bison finished 25-9 and lost to eventual NCAA Champion Connecticut in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Stags went 25-9, the most wins in school history, and lost in the second round of the NIT.

Minnesota's will play three games in Orlando as part of the aforementioned ESPN OId Spice Classic over the Thanksgiving Holiday. The Gophers open the classic on Nov. 24 1:30 p.m. Central against DePaul on ESPN2. Minnesota will play either Texas Tech or Indiana State in the second round on Nov. 25. The third and final round of the tournament will be played on Nov. 27.

The remaining field includes Fairfield, Dayton, Wake Forest and Arizona State. All games as part of the classic will be broadcast on the ESPN family of networks (ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU & ESPN3.com).

The Gophers defeated Western Kentucky, No. 8 North Carolina and West Virginia to win the 2010 Puerto Rico Classic. Minnesota has an all-time record of 70-40 in in-season tournaments, dating back to the Chicago District Olympic Tournament during the 1935-36 season. The Gophers will head to Orlando with a 9-3 record during the Tubby Smith era in in-season tournaments.

Minnesota returns from Florida for a game on Nov. 30 against Virginia Tech. The contest, the first meeting in the history of the programs, will be part of the 13th annual Big Ten/ACC Challenge. The Gophers hold a 4-8 record in the Challenge, losing to Virginia last season.

The Gophers will open the month of December with a contest against PAC 12 Conference member Southern California on Dec. 3. The matchup will be the fifth meeting between the schools but the first since a 76-58 Minnesota victory in the 1993 NIT.

Minnesota’s non-conference schedule will also include Appalachian State (Dec. 6), St. Peters (Dec. 10), Central Michigan (Dec. 13) and North Dakota State or South Dakota State (Dec. 22). St. Peter’s finished last season with a 20-14 record, losing to Purdue in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

The Maroon and Gold's season officially begins on Tues., Nov. 1, in an exhibition slate against Bemidji State. Minnesota's other exhibition game will be Mon., Nov. 7 vs. Augustana College. Both exhibition contests will be held at Williams Arena.

ALL TIMES CENTRAL – HOME GAMES ARE BOLD

Given VT and USC are at home is anything less than 12-0 at least a little disappointing?

Yet another poorly worded release

I could pick apart yet another poorly written release by the U (there are 2 mistakes and/or lack of clarity, at minimum), but I'll save them the embarrassment.

Sorry - this schedule didn't format well....

Looking at this the first time, I thought the SD Board of Regents had really outdone itself with North/South Dakota State. I mean USDSU was bad enough. But I think I get it now.

Bummer for DePaul.. Shane Larkin (Barry's kid) has just left DePaul. He was to be part of their freshman class this year and could have gotten a lot of time.
